Preventing ATV accidents starts before the engine is on: get hands-on instruction, wear protective gear, choose a machine suited to the rider, and follow its seating limits. During the ride, stay off public roads except to cross where local law permits, and never ride impaired. These steps reduce risk; no habit or piece of equipment can eliminate it.
Build safety into every ride
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a set of practical precautions that riders and families can check before setting out. Treat them as routine requirements, not optional extras for difficult trails.
- Get hands-on training. CPSC advises training with a qualified instructor and gives an ATV Safety Institute (ASI) course as an example. Take instruction before riding, and seek a refresher when your skills, the terrain, or riding conditions warrant it. Training can build skills; it does not guarantee a safe outcome. See CPSC’s ATV safety-course guidance.
- Wear protective gear every time. CPSC lists a helmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. Make sure equipment fits and is appropriate for the intended use. The cited guidance does not endorse a particular brand, product, or seller.
- Match the ATV to the rider. Riders younger than 16 should drive only age-appropriate youth models and should never drive adult ATVs, according to CPSC. Check the manufacturer’s stated intended rider range rather than choosing by appearance or assuming an adult machine is suitable because a child can reach the controls.
- Keep to the ATV’s seating capacity. Never carry more people than the machine has seats. CPSC notes that most ATVs are designed for one rider; a single-rider ATV is not a passenger vehicle.
- Do not ride impaired. Avoid alcohol before or while driving. Impairment can undermine judgment and slow responses when conditions change.
Keep ATVs off paved public roads
ATVs are designed for off-road terrain. CPSC says not to ride on public roads except to cross where permitted by law. Road-use rules differ by location, so check local requirements before any crossing. Permission to cross does not change the vehicle’s design or remove the safety concern of riding on a public road.
Give young riders extra safeguards
Children need more than a smaller helmet or a shorter ride: the vehicle itself must be appropriate for their age. CPSC’s guidance is explicit that riders younger than 16 should use age-appropriate youth models, never adult ATVs. Adults should make the selection and supervise riding; a child’s confidence or experience is not a substitute for matching the machine to the rider.

The scale of past injuries underscores why those precautions matter, especially for families. CPSC’s 2018 report summary estimated 81,800 ATV-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments in 2018, with more than one quarter involving children under 16. That is a historical estimate for 2018, not a current annual count. The same summary reported 591 ATV-related fatalities in 2016, the latest fatality year it considered complete in that report. See CPSC’s All-Terrain Vehicle Safety page.

Figures from different CPSC publications do not all describe the same vehicles or reporting periods. In a May 23, 2023 release, CPSC reported 2,178 off-highway-vehicle (OHV)-associated deaths for 2017–2019, nearly 70% of which were attributed to ATVs. The release also estimated 106,600 OHV emergency-room-treated injuries in 2021, with 29% among children under 16. The latter injury count covers OHVs, not ATVs alone, and refers to 2021; it should not be compared as though it were an ATV-only annual total. CPSC identifies overturning, collisions, and occupant ejection among the dangers of OHV riding. Read the 2023 CPSC release for its stated periods and categories.
