Treat that as a practical visual clue, not a manufacturer-certified test. If you are buying parts—or the engine may have been modified—confirm the exact variant and part fitment before ordering.
How to identify a Predator 212 Hemi
Inspect the valve cover
With the engine off and cool, look at the cover over the valves and rocker arms. According to e&c carburetors’ identification guidance, the Hemi has a wide, cast cover; the non-Hemi has a stamped-tin cover resembling one used on clone engines. This is the clearest external distinction established by the available sources. It is specialist guidance, not a visual identification rule published by Harbor Freight.
Use numbers and paperwork as supporting clues
The specialist retailer associates Harbor Freight item 60363 with the Hemi. But identifiers are not conclusive by themselves: Harbor Freight’s current 212cc engine listing displays SKU 69730 while linking manuals for item 60363 and several 69730 UPCs. The historic item numbers therefore do not provide a reliable stand-alone way to identify every engine in circulation. Check the cover on the engine itself and use its documentation as corroboration.
If the engine has been changed or rebuilt
A cover can be replaced, and internal components may not match the engine’s original configuration. If the visible clues conflict with paperwork, or you are selecting parts for a modified engine, verify the head or component numbers and consult a variant-specific parts diagram. Harbor Freight’s 60363 manual and 69730 manual document their respective engine families and parts, but the manuals do not give a plain-language visual comparison of the two cover styles.

Hemi and non-Hemi differences that matter when ordering parts
Identifying the variant is especially important before buying performance or repair components. The parts retailer warns that many components do not interchange between the Hemi, non-Hemi, and 196cc clone families, and it separates Hemi categories such as head and valvetrain parts, ignition and flywheel components, and rotating assemblies.
That does not mean every part is unique or that no components interchange. Fit depends on the specific component and engine revision. Confirm the listing’s stated fitment for your engine before ordering springs, a head, a flywheel, or another internal part; a generic “Predator 212” label may not be specific enough.

Does the Hemi make more power?
Do not infer a stock power advantage from the name or from a modified-build calculator. Predator 212 Dyno’s comparison reports simulated results for a particular modified setup, with the governor removed and the model set to 800 feet and 75°F. Those figures describe that modeled configuration, not a controlled stock-engine comparison or a universal result. Stock output and real-world performance depend on the engine, equipment load, setup, and modifications.
Replacing an engine: check the application, not just the label
Both variants belong to the Predator 212cc OHV horizontal-shaft gasoline-engine family. Harbor Freight lists the engine for replacement use in equipment including pressure washers, log splitters, mowers, tillers, pumps, and generators, and names other small-engine families it may replace. That broad application language is not a guarantee of a direct bolt-in fit. Before choosing a replacement, compare the shaft diameter and length, keyway, mounting pattern, output requirements, and the target equipment’s specifications.

Safety before inspection or service
Follow the Harbor Freight owner manual for safe operation and service. Its warning states: “Using an engine indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES.” Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide; operate the engine outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents. For an inspection, let the engine cool and follow the manual’s precautions before touching or removing components.
