Pratt & Whitney announced on October 26, 2012, that it had completed assembly of its first PurePower PW1100G-JM engine to test at its West Palm Beach, Florida, facility. The milestone began a development and testing program for the Airbus A320neo family; it did not mark the completion of an engine ready for airline service.
What Pratt & Whitney completed in October 2012
The company marked the assembly with a “Last Bolt Ceremony” attended by Pratt & Whitney, Airbus, MTU, JAEC and company employees. The first PW1100G-JM was a development engine intended for testing, and Pratt & Whitney described it as the first engine to power the A320neo family. The company rated it at 33,000 pounds of thrust. Pratt & Whitney’s October 26, 2012 announcement set out the contemporary milestone and specifications.
At the ceremony, Klaus Roewe, then Airbus senior vice president for the A320neo Family, said: “The PurePower engine is an integral part of the Airbus A320neo family of aircraft.” The quotation appeared in Pratt & Whitney’s release distributed by PR Newswire. Read the release.
What “engine to test” meant
“First engine to test,” or FETT, identifies an early development milestone: the first assembled engine designated for the test program. It does not mean the engine had completed certification, been installed on a production aircraft, or entered airline service.

In 2012, Pratt & Whitney said the test program would use eight engines over the following 24 months, with builds at West Palm Beach and Middletown. How the geared turbofan was described
Pratt & Whitney said the engine’s gear system lets the fan rotate at a different speed from the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The company attributed fuel-efficiency and environmental benefits to this arrangement combined with a new core. A 2017 Pratt & Whitney brochure lists three A320neo-family engine variants—PW1124G-JM, PW1127G-JM and PW1133G-JM—and gives each an 81-inch fan tip diameter and a 12.5:1 bypass ratio. Those specifications apply to the listed variants in that brochure; they should not be taken as proof that every configuration or later modification has identical figures. The October 2012 ceremony announcement and a later retrospective brochure use different levels of dating for the first engine-to-test milestone. The announcement gives the ceremony date as October 26, 2012; the 2017 brochure places the first engine-to-test milestone in November 2012. The two dates are reported here as stated by their respective sources rather than treated as interchangeable.

The contrast between the October 2015 service date projected in 2012 and the January 2016 entry-into-service date listed retrospectively in 2017 shows why the original announcement should be read as a schedule forecast, not as a record of what ultimately happened.
