Practical Dual-Sport Motorcycles to Consider: 10 Models Across Different Needs

A practical dual-sport depends on rider fit and route, not a universal ranking. Compare 10 manufacturer-listed options, with model-year and pricing caveats.

There is no evidence-backed universal top 10 here: a low-seat bike that suits slow trails may be a poor fit for long highway commutes, while a larger, better-equipped model can be harder to manage off-road. These 10 dual-sport options span the practical trade-offs buyers should compare, but they are not a ranked test. Model years and prices are stated where available; confirm local street-legal status, dealer inventory and final pricing before buying.

How to choose a practical dual-sport

Start with the riding you will actually do. A dual-sport may be street-legal yet strongly oriented toward dirt, or easier to use on pavement but less suited to demanding trails. Compare the whole motorcycle and your fit—not engine size or base price alone.

  • Riding mix: Distinguish paved commuting and highway links from gravel, maintained fire roads and technical singletrack.
  • Manageability: Check seat height and fully fueled curb weight, then consider low-speed balance and whether you can confidently stop and turn around.
  • Range and comfort: Tank capacity, wind protection, seating and engine character matter on longer rides. Tank capacity alone does not establish real-world range.
  • Trail equipment: Compare wheel sizes, suspension, ABS behavior, traction aids, tires and included protection such as a skid plate or handguards.
  • Road usability: Check transmission, lighting, passenger suitability, accessories and street-legal status in your jurisdiction.
  • Total cost: Published MSRP is not an out-the-door quote. Destination, dealer fees, taxes, title and accessories can add to the price.

10 dual-sport motorcycles to consider

This is a set of examples across different rider needs, not a universal ranking. The available manufacturer information does not establish comparative reliability, comfort, measured range or independent performance. Model year and market matter; confirm the exact trim and current local availability.

1. Honda CRF300L Rally (2026, US)

The Rally adds touring-oriented equipment to a 286cc fuel-injected single: a larger fuel tank, tall windscreen, extended bodywork and long-travel suspension. Honda lists a 35.2-inch seat height, 333-pound curb weight with required fluids and a full tank, and 3.4-gallon capacity. Its windscreen and tank make it worth considering for riders with pavement links between dirt sections, but the height and weight are important fit checks. Honda lists a $6,499 base MSRP plus a $600 destination charge; this is not an out-the-door price. Honda’s 2026 CRF300L Rally specifications and US lineup listing.

Suzuki DR-Z4S specifications, DR-Z4S+ details and accessories.

3. Kawasaki KLX230 S (2026, US)

This is a smaller-displacement option for buyers prioritizing a manageable utility bike over a larger engine. Kawasaki lists the non-ABS version at $5,199 base MSRP and the ABS version at $5,499, with $435 destination additional. These are published base prices, not dealer quotes or final purchase totals. The manufacturer lists a rear carrier, USB Type-C outlet kit and engine guard among the accessories. Kawasaki’s KLX230 S listing.

4. Kawasaki KLX300 (2026, US)

Consider the KLX300 if you want more displacement and a six-speed transmission than the KLX230 offers. Its specification sheet lists 25.0 hp at 8,000 rpm and 17.7 lb-ft at 7,000 rpm. Kawasaki gives a $5,649 starting base MSRP, with trim- and color-specific figures and destination presented separately on its official page. Kawasaki KLX300 specifications and pricing.

Kawasaki lists a 32.5-inch seat, 233cc fuel-injected air-cooled engine, aluminum skid plate and reinforced hand guards. 6. Yamaha XT250 (2025, US listing)

Yamaha’s US product page lists the XT250 as a 2025 model with a $5,499 MSRP. That is a model-year-specific listing, not evidence that a 2026 version is available. Check local inventory and confirm the model year before comparing it with newer listings. Yamaha’s US product catalog.

7. Honda CRF300L (US lineup listing)

The CRF300L is the non-Rally alternative to consider if you do not need the Rally’s larger tank and windscreen. Honda’s lineup page lists a $5,749 base MSRP, but its entries carry different model-year references; do not assume that figure is for 2026. Confirm the current listing, specifications and inventory for your market. Honda’s US lineup.

8. Honda CRF300LS (US lineup listing)

The CRF300LS is another Honda 300-class option in the lineup, listed at $5,749 base MSRP. Because the lineup page mixes model-year references, that price should not be treated as a confirmed 2026 price. Verify current model year and local availability before deciding whether its particular configuration suits your fit and routes. Honda’s US lineup.

9. Honda XR150L (US lineup listing)

For shoppers considering a smaller-displacement Honda, the XR150L appears on the US lineup page at $3,399 base MSRP. The page contains different model-year references, so the listing alone does not establish a 2026 price or local stock. Confirm street legality and the exact model year in your jurisdiction. Honda’s US lineup.

10. Honda XR650L or CRF450RL (US lineup listing)

These two Hondas illustrate very different reasons to move up in size or performance. Honda identifies the XR650L as a 644cc air-cooled single and fully street-legal, with a listed $6,999 base MSRP. The CRF450RL is a 450cc liquid-cooled model with a wide-ratio six-speed and street-legal status, listed at $10,199. The lineup includes differing model-year references, so neither figure should be assumed to be a 2026 price. Verify the current model-year entry and local details. Honda’s US lineup.

Which dual-sport motorcycle is best for everyday riding?

“Best” depends on the commute. For longer pavement links, the CRF300L Rally’s windscreen and larger tank are relevant equipment, while riders focused on simpler urban and local-road use may prefer to compare smaller-displacement candidates such as the KLX230 S or XT250. The listed equipment does not establish which is more comfortable or economical in real use; fit the bike and consider your speed, distance and luggage needs.

What is a good dual-sport for both road and trail?

Choose according to the harder part of your regular use. Maintained gravel roads and pavement links place different demands on a bike than technical singletrack. Compare the tire and wheel setup, suspension, ground clearance, protective equipment, ergonomics and road equipment on the exact trim; the label “dual-sport” does not imply equal ability on pavement and dirt.

Which dual-sport has a low seat height?

Among the exact figures in these manufacturer listings, Kawasaki gives the KLX230 Sherpa S ABS a 32.5-inch seat height. Honda lists 35.2 inches for the 2026 CRF300L Rally; Suzuki lists 920 mm for the DR-Z4S+ specifically. Seat height alone does not determine whether a bike feels manageable: width, suspension sag, load and balance also affect how easily a rider can put a foot down. Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki.

  • Motocross-style seat is relative low and comfortable, and allows maximum rider movement.
  • Item comes 70% assembled inside a metal crate. Assembly required is tires, handle bar etc. Step by step videos for assembly available.

How much range does a dual-sport motorcycle have?

These manufacturer figures do not establish a comparable real-world range. Honda lists the CRF300L Rally’s tank capacity as 3.4 gallons, but capacity is not mileage: consumption varies with speed, terrain, load and riding style. Do not calculate a dependable range from tank size without credible fuel-consumption data for the conditions you expect.

Should you choose a 230, 300, 400 or 450?

Displacement is a starting point, not a buying rule. The KLX230 S and Sherpa S ABS are smaller-engine examples; the KLX300 and Honda CRF300 models occupy the 300-class; the Suzuki DR-Z4S is 398cc; and Honda’s CRF450RL is a 450cc option. Compare seat and weight, transmission, equipment, road speeds and the difficulty of your trails. A larger engine does not by itself make a bike more practical, and the available specifications do not establish a universal winner.

What to confirm before you buy

  • Exact model year, trim and market-specific street-legal status.
  • Seat height and curb weight for the precise version, including whether weight is listed with a full tank.
  • What protection and electronics are standard versus optional accessories.
  • Current local inventory and a written out-the-door quote that includes destination, fees, taxes and title.
  • Accessory fitment for the model year and trim before ordering items such as a skid plate or handguards.
