The 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake is best understood as chassis CSX3015: a 427 Competition roadster that was converted in 1967 to Semi-Competition specification. Specialist histories identify two Super Snake Cobras, CSX3015 and CSX3303, and say CSX3015 is the sole surviving example.
What the 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake was
CSX3015 did not leave Shelby American as a separate, high-volume Super Snake model. According to the specialist chassis history, it left in September 1965 as a 427 Competition roadster, then underwent a 1967 conversion from Competition to Semi-Competition specification. The conversion adapted the competition car for road use, adding equipment such as mufflers, a windshield and bumpers. How CSX3015 became a Super Snake
From competition car to European promotional tour
The chassis-history account says CSX3015 was shipped and invoiced to Ford Advanced Vehicles in England for a European promotional tour. It reportedly returned to the United States in late 1966 still in Competition specification.
The 1967 conversion
The same account places the Semi-Competition conversion in early to mid-1967. It reports that CSX3015 retained its original body, aluminum Super Snake hood, date-coded engine block and competition rear-end equipment. Those details are reported by the specialist history; they are not independently confirmed here by a factory build sheet, registry extract or inspection.

How many Super Snake Cobras were made?
The specialist history describes two 427 Super Snake Cobras: CSX3015 and CSX3303. It reports that CSX3303 was destroyed after its owner, Tony Maxey, crashed it, leaving CSX3015 as the sole surviving example. Barrett-Jackson also called CSX3015 the only remaining example in its announcement for the 2021 Scottsdale auction. These are attributed historical claims; the sources cited here do not independently establish either chassis’s present location or condition.
How much did CSX3015 sell for?
Barrett-Jackson’s archive marks CSX3015 sold as lot 1301 at Scottsdale in 2007, with a sale price of $5,500,000. Barrett-Jackson’s archived listing and the specialist chassis history report the same figure.

Barrett-Jackson announced the car for its 2021 Scottsdale sale, but that announcement establishes only that the car was offered for auction. It does not establish a final sale result or price for 2021.

CSX3015 is the historic car discussed here, identified by its chassis number and reported conversion history. Shelby American’s official Cobra brochure describes the Cobra’s origins around an AC chassis and Ford V8 and notes that continuation versions are offered today. A continuation Cobra, replica or modern vehicle bearing the Super Snake name is not the original CSX3015. A badge or period-style specification alone does not establish that a car is this historic chassis.
