The figures that can be compared are incomplete, and some refer to engine output while hybrid motor ratings are reported separately. Here is what the published numbers support—and where a ranking would overstate the evidence.
What “Japan’s SUVs in 2024” means here
“Japan’s” could mean vehicles sold in Japan, Japanese-brand vehicles sold around the world, or SUVs built in Japan. This comparison uses the first meaning: SUVs offered in the Japanese market during calendar year 2024. A model’s announcement date, start of regular sales, and model-year label are not interchangeable; the GX550, for example, was announced for Japan in April 2024, with regular sales planned for autumn after an initial limited lottery sale.
SUV and crossover boundaries can vary by catalog. More importantly, the evidence available here does not provide a complete candidate list or comparable output figures for ten models. The figures below are therefore documented examples, not positions in a top-ten ranking.

Why engine and hybrid figures cannot be mixed
A hybrid’s engine rating and its motor rating describe separate components. Adding them does not automatically produce the vehicle’s combined system output: the figures may reflect different operating conditions, and the manufacturer may specify system output separately. Lexus’s RX specification table lists motor output apart from the RX engine ratings. Its LBX specifications likewise list a 67 kW (91 PS) engine alongside separate front- and rear-motor ratings. Those component numbers should not be summed and compared with another vehicle’s engine maximum.
A defensible ranking would apply one measure consistently—preferably the manufacturer’s combined system output where available, or engine maximum output across every vehicle if that is the chosen convention. It would also need to identify the exact Japanese grade, powertrain, calendar-year availability, units, and source for each entry. Published manufacturer ratings should remain distinct from independently measured performance.

Other 2024 candidates the figures do not settle
Toyota Land Cruiser 250
Toyota announced the Land Cruiser 250 series in Japan in April 2024 with 2.8-liter diesel and 2.7-liter gasoline powertrains. The cited release excerpt does not provide their output ratings, so it cannot establish where either version belongs in a power ranking.
Toyota Crown Crossover RS Landscape
A Toyota Gazoo catalog result reports 200 kW (272 PS) for the 2024 RS Landscape. That is a catalog figure requiring confirmation against an official current or archived Toyota specification before it can support a definitive ranking.

Toyota Land Cruiser 300 diesel
A secondary Cars Japan catalog result reports 227 kW (309 PS) for the 2024 diesel. Because the cited figure is not confirmed here against an official Toyota specification, it should not be treated as a verified ranking entry.
Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota’s Land Cruiser brand page lists the FJ at 120 kW (163 PS), but the page’s information is current to May 2026. That later listing does not establish the FJ’s availability in Japan during 2024, so it is not evidence for this year’s candidate set.

Can the ten most powerful be ranked reliably?
Not from these figures. They establish several useful specifications and identify plausible candidates, but they do not document every eligible SUV and grade sold in Japan during 2024. Nor do they supply one comparable output measure for all candidates. Calling these examples “number one” through “number ten” would imply a complete market survey that the figures do not support.
A verified top ten would require a full candidate list built from official Japanese catalog or archive material, followed by model- and grade-specific checks of availability and output. Until those checks are available, the GX550 OVERTRAIL+ is the strongest clearly documented output figure in this set—not a proven winner over every SUV offered in Japan that year.
