Choose a portable charger only when the EV is safe to charge, can accept the charge, and a compatible power source or mobile charging service is actually available. If any of those conditions is missing—or the vehicle is damaged or showing a high-voltage fault—contact roadside assistance or qualified recovery and follow the vehicle manual. The right emergency option depends on the car’s condition, local services, and your plan’s towing terms.
Choose based on the car’s condition and available power
Use this decision guide to choose the next step. It does not replace the vehicle manual or emergency instructions.
| Situation | Practical first step | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| The vehicle is intact, can accept charge, and a compatible power source is available | Charge from that source, or request mobile charging if a service covers the location. | Confirm the connector and charging method, that the power source is usable, and that the added energy can reach a known working station. |
| The vehicle is intact but there is no accessible power source, or mobile charging is unavailable | Arrange roadside recovery to a suitable charger or safe destination. | Ask for equipment approved for the vehicle, confirm your plan’s towing distance and destination rules, and check whether an adapter is needed. |
| There is collision damage, a high-voltage warning or fault, fire, submersion, or another unsafe condition | Move to safety and contact emergency services or qualified recovery as appropriate. Do not use charging as a workaround. | Follow the vehicle’s emergency response and recovery instructions. NHTSA warns of high-voltage hazards in damaged or flooded vehicles: NHTSA electric and hybrid vehicle safety. |
| The vehicle reports zero range or cannot charge | Contact the manufacturer or roadside provider promptly. | Do not assume a displayed zero leaves usable travel range; follow the vehicle manual. |
A mobile charging service may add enough energy to reach a station, but availability and equipment vary. AAA, for example, says it does not provide EV charging; it offers towing for out-of-charge EVs within the member’s plan distance. Confirm your own provider’s service area and terms rather than assuming AAA’s arrangements apply elsewhere (AAA EV roadside assistance).
What a portable EV charger can—and cannot—do
A portable EVSE (electric vehicle supply equipment) is not a self-contained roadside rescue battery. It needs a compatible vehicle and a suitable power source at the breakdown location, unless a mobile service brings its own charging equipment. A charger you carry for use at home or another powered location may be useless on a roadside without an accessible, appropriate supply.

Vehicle manuals show why compatibility and market matter. Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. manual describes household charging with a 120 V portable charger for a vehicle that cannot reach a public station and identifies that equipment as included for the covered vehicle (Hyundai 2025 U.S. manual). Hyundai’s 2026 UK manual describes a 230 V portable charger sold separately (Hyundai 2026 UK manual). These are market- and vehicle-specific examples, not a promise that a charger is included, interchangeable, or usable at any roadside location.
AAA’s 2023 evaluation of mobile EV charging equipment discusses out-of-charge recovery using a flatbed tow or specialized equipment for partial recharging. It evaluates commercial equipment for roadside-service use; it does not establish that a privately carried EVSE will rescue any EV, or provide a universal emergency charge time or cost comparison (AAA Mobile Electric Vehicle Charging evaluation).

A high-voltage traction battery cannot be jump-started
An EV’s high-voltage traction battery is different from its 12-volt battery. NHTSA states, “The high-voltage battery found in EVs and HEVs cannot be jumped.” It notes that the 12-volt battery may be jump-startable in many vehicles, subject to the owner’s manual (NHTSA electric and hybrid vehicle safety). A jump-start for the 12-volt system is not a way to replenish the driving battery; use only the procedure specified for your vehicle.
Why towing instructions must be vehicle-specific
Do not assume an EV can be dragged with its drive wheels rolling on the road. NHTSA warns that towing on the drive axle can damage an EV or hybrid and directs owners to the vehicle manual (NHTSA electric and hybrid vehicle safety). UK Department for Transport guidance for recovery operators says towing EVs on their wheels is not recommended because it can generate electrical power that may damage high-voltage systems; it identifies a flatbed or trailer, or dolly wheels, as recommended approaches subject to the manufacturer’s instructions (
