Porsche is not choosing between electric cars and internal-combustion engines. Its current plan is to sell battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and combustion models side by side, while adjusting the timing and mix of future products to reflect market conditions and customer demand. That means some combustion and hybrid models will stay in the range longer than previously expected, while Porsche continues to develop and update EVs.
What Porsche’s multi-powertrain strategy means
Porsche describes its direction as a portfolio recalibration, not an end to electrification. The company says it is adjusting the pace of its battery-electric vehicle (BEV) rollout and its combustion offering in response to a slower market transition and customer preferences. In practical terms, the plan has three parts: retain combustion and hybrid options in selected model lines, continue updating existing EVs, and revise the timing or powertrain mix of some future projects. It does not mean Porsche has canceled its electric-car plans, nor that every combustion model will remain available in every market.
Which combustion and hybrid models are planned to stay?
In a September 19, 2025 announcement, Porsche said current Cayenne and Panamera combustion and plug-in hybrid models would remain available “well into the 2030s.” The company also said successor generations for those models had been added to its product-cycle plan. A new SUV above the Cayenne
Porsche also said a new SUV series positioned above the Cayenne—previously intended to be fully electric—would launch initially with combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains. “Initially” matters: the announcement describes the planned launch configuration, not a permanent exclusion of electric versions.
What is changing in Porsche’s electric-car roadmap?
Porsche said it would reschedule certain EV launches and redesign the timing of a planned new EV platform for the 2030s. At the same time, the company says it will continue updating its existing electric range. The September 2025 announcement therefore points to a revised pace and product sequence, not a withdrawal from battery-electric vehicles.

718 Boxster and Cayman
In its October 7, 2026 strategy announcement, Porsche said all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models are expected to contribute to sales in their first full production year in 2028. A B-segment SUV alongside the electric Macan
Porsche said it plans to present an SUV in the B segment in 2028 alongside the electric Macan. The announcement identifies the planned segment and presentation year; it does not establish final specifications, pricing or availability by market.

Why Porsche says it is recalibrating
Porsche’s September 2025 announcement cited slower growth in demand for exclusive battery-electric vehicles, U.S. import tariffs, a decline in China’s luxury market and a slowdown in EV adoption as external headwinds. These are the company’s stated reasons for adjusting its plans, not independent proof that any one factor caused a particular customer to choose a powertrain.
Then-CEO Oliver Blume said Porsche wanted to meet “new market realities and changing customer demands.” In October 2026, CEO Michael Leiters described the company’s “Sportwagenschmiede ’35” strategy as a plan to strengthen the sports-car brand across model lines and in high-margin segments. Those statements frame the strategy as both a response to conditions and an effort to protect Porsche’s business priorities; they do not establish that the company will meet its financial goals.

What Porsche’s recent delivery figures show—and what they do not
Porsche reported that BEVs accounted for 19.4% of its automotive deliveries in the first half of 2026, down from 23.5% in the first half of 2025. It also reported 122,306 total deliveries in H1 2026, compared with 146,391 in H1 2025. The strategic announcements are useful context, but they are not a substitute for checking a specific model’s current availability. Porsche’s plans can vary by model, market and timing, and forward-looking dates may change. If you are deciding between a Porsche EV, PHEV or combustion model, compare the actual vehicle and your own use rather than treating one powertrain as the company’s universal preference.

- Driving pattern: Think about typical trip lengths, long-distance travel and how often you want to refuel or recharge.
- Performance priorities: Compare the specific model’s driving characteristics and capabilities, rather than assuming they are determined by powertrain alone.
- Market and model availability: Check Porsche’s current local lineup and delivery information; a strategy announcement does not guarantee a configuration in your country.
The company announcements establish how Porsche intends to balance its product portfolio. They do not provide an independent, like-for-like comparison of ownership cost, emissions or regulatory exposure across powertrains, so those factors need to be assessed for the particular vehicle and location.
