The Porsche 909 Bergspyder was a 1968 hill-climb racer built to shed weight at almost any cost. Porsche’s 2026 history puts its race-ready weight, including fuel, at just under 384 kg and its output at 275 PS. The “carcinogenic brakes” detail needs a qualification: Porsche explicitly attributes ultralight beryllium brake discs to the earlier 910/8 Bergspyder, but the available official accounts do not confirm that the 909 itself used them.
What made the Porsche 909 so uncompromising?
The 909 Bergspyder was designed for hill climbs, where low mass and rapid acceleration mattered more than the compromises expected of a road car. Porsche describes it as its lightest racing car at the time. Its race-ready weight was just under 384 kg including fuel, and it produced 275 PS, according to Porsche Newsroom in 2026.

Only two 909s were built. Porsche says one of them competed twice in 1968. The car’s construction reflected its weight-saving mission: Porsche’s account describes an aluminum space frame and lightweight titanium and magnesium engine components, among other specialized materials.
Which Porsche Bergspyder had beryllium brake discs?
Porsche’s 2026 account of the 910/8 Bergspyder, the 909’s predecessor, specifically lists ultralight beryllium brake discs among the features retained in that car. It also mentions titanium chassis springs and brake calipers. That is direct evidence for the 910/8, not proof that the 909 shared the same discs.

The two cars belong to the same lightweight Bergspyder lineage, but they should not be treated as interchangeable when describing a particular component. Porsche’s 909 history connects the models and explains their engineering relationship; the official material cited here does not establish that every 909—or either specific 909—used beryllium discs. So the precise answer to “Were the 909’s brakes made of beryllium?” is that the available official accounts do not confirm it.
Why is beryllium considered dangerous?
The concern is exposure to beryllium particles and other forms of the material, not simply the presence of beryllium in a component. The National Cancer Institute says the main route of human exposure is inhalation of airborne particles and reports an increased risk of lung cancer among workers exposed to beryllium or its compounds. NIOSH warns that exposure to particles, fumes, mists, or solutions from beryllium-containing materials can cause sensitization or chronic beryllium disease, a potentially disabling or fatal respiratory illness.

Those health sources address exposure, especially in work settings; they do not assess intact historic brake assemblies. They provide no basis for concluding that merely owning or viewing a preserved car, or being near one, creates a health hazard.

What the story does—and does not—establish
- Established: Porsche’s 2026 accounts describe the 909 as a 1968, exceptionally light hill-climb racer, with just under 384 kg race-ready weight including fuel and 275 PS.
- Established: Porsche explicitly identifies beryllium brake discs on the earlier 910/8 Bergspyder.
- Not established by those accounts: that the 909 itself had beryllium brake discs.
- Health context: beryllium exposure can cause serious disease, but the cited health authorities do not evaluate casual contact with an intact historic car.
