The Porsche 917 did not become a production road car. Its 50-year milestone marks the first public-road outing of a single converted race car, chassis 917-030, on April 28, 1975. Commissioned by Count Rossi and adapted by Porsche, the car left Weissach and went on to Paris.
What happened on April 28, 1975?
Porsche’s account says chassis 917-030 departed the company’s Weissach development center for its first drive on public roads on April 28, 1975. The trip covered several hundred miles and reached Paris. That date marked the beginning of the car’s road use, not the launch of a street-going 917 model. Porsche’s 2025 anniversary account describes the journey and the car’s conversion.
Why was a Porsche 917 adapted for the road?
Italian businessman Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, commonly known as Count Rossi and an heir to the Martini family, asked Porsche to adapt a 917 for road use. Porsche says the donor, chassis 917-030, had previously raced. The one-off conversion was completed at Weissach and finished in Martini Silver.
What made the race car usable on public roads?
Porsche lists a set of practical additions intended to equip the car for road use, alongside changes to its cabin:
#1 Best Overall
- 1:18 scale collector's car made of metal
- Very high quality miniature model
- Precise finishes and realistic details for a faithful reproduction
- Rudimentary exhaust mufflers
- Extra mirrors and side indicators
- A horn
- A spare tire carried beneath the rear clamshell
- Tan leather seat coverings, with suede on the roof lining, doors and dashboard
- A wooden-finished gear shifter
The car originally wore an Alabama license plate. Porsche’s account identifies these modifications but does not document the full legal approval process or the registration rules applied in each jurisdiction. The plate alone should not be taken as a complete explanation of how the car was approved for road use.
Was the Porsche 917 really street legal?
Yes—in the sense that Porsche describes this particular car as road-converted and records its first public-road drive. That evidence concerns chassis 917-030, a one-off customer conversion, not a regular production model or a general road approval for Porsche 917s. The available account does not establish the complete certification or registration history.

Where is chassis 917-030 now?
In its April 2025 report, Porsche said the car was with its owner in southern France, registered in the UK, and had recently been restored while retaining its original paint and interior. Those details describe the car’s reported status at the time of that article, not a live check of its current location or condition.
