Did Porsche Build the World’s First Hybrid? The 1900 Semper Vivus

The 1900 Lohner-Porsche Semper Vivus paired petrol-powered generators with wheel-hub electric motors. Here’s why Porsche calls it the world’s first functional hybrid, and how it differs from the Mixte and the 2010 Cayenne S Hybrid.

In 1900, Ferdinand Porsche developed the Lohner-Porsche Semper Vivus, a car Porsche describes as the world’s first functional hybrid. Its petrol engines powered generators, while electric motors at the wheels drove the car—a layout that differs from the modern image of an engine mechanically turning the wheels.

Was the first-ever hybrid car designed by Porsche?

Porsche’s historical timeline calls the 1900 Semper Vivus “the world’s first hybrid vehicle,” and the company’s history feature describes it as a functional full hybrid. That is Porsche’s characterization of the milestone. The available accounts do not establish a universally agreed claim covering every earlier experiment or every definition of “hybrid.”

Ferdinand Porsche developed the wheel-hub electric-drive system while working with Vienna coachbuilder Lohner. The car was therefore a Lohner-Porsche project from 1900—not a vehicle built by Porsche AG as the modern automaker. Porsche’s company history places the Semper Vivus in that early collaboration.

How did the Semper Vivus work?

The Semper Vivus used a series-hybrid arrangement: petrol engines generated electricity, and electric motors at the wheel hubs supplied the drive. In the configuration described by Porsche, the engines did not mechanically drive the wheels.

  1. Petrol engines: Two combustion engines powered generators.
  2. Generators: They supplied electrical current to the wheel-hub motors and batteries.
  3. Wheel-hub motors: Electric motors at the wheels propelled the car.

In plain terms, the petrol engines served as onboard power sources for an electric drivetrain. The arrangement retained electric wheel drive while adding engines to generate electricity; the cited historical material does not establish a real-world range or comparative efficiency figure.

Porsche’s timeline gives the Semper Vivus two combustion engines rated at 2.6 kW (3.5 hp) each, two electric motors rated at 1.8 kW (2.5 hp) each, and a maximum speed of 35 km/h. These are Porsche-published historical specifications for the Semper Vivus, not modern test results. Porsche’s timeline identifies the vehicle and figures.

How was the Semper Vivus different from the Mixte?

The names mark related but distinct points in the Lohner-Porsche story. Porsche describes the Mixte as the production-ready version that followed the Semper Vivus; its history feature places the Mixte in 1901. The company timeline separately records a Mixte hillclimb win in 1902. Neither date changes the Semper Vivus’s place as the earlier functional-hybrid milestone in Porsche’s account.

Vehicle or milestone What it represents Power arrangement or distinction
Semper Vivus (1900) Porsche-described functional/full hybrid Petrol engines powered generators; wheel-hub electric motors drove the car.
Mixte (production-ready version, placed in 1901) Successor/version developed for production Related Lohner-Porsche hybrid arrangement; Porsche’s timeline records a hillclimb in 1902.
Cayenne S Hybrid (2010) First series-produced hybrid in Porsche’s company history, according to Porsche A later production milestone; the cited timeline does not detail its full system architecture.

Porsche’s history feature describes the Mixte’s production-ready role, while its timeline records the 1902 hillclimb and 2010 Cayenne S Hybrid.

What was Porsche’s first series-produced hybrid?

Porsche identifies the 2010 Cayenne S Hybrid as the first series-produced hybrid in the company’s history. This is a different claim from the Semper Vivus milestone: the early Lohner-Porsche vehicle was a functional hybrid designed by Ferdinand Porsche, while the Cayenne was Porsche’s later series-production hybrid. Porsche’s timeline records the 2010 milestone.

Is the Semper Vivus on display the original car?

No. Porsche says the museum’s functioning Semper Vivus is a reconstruction, not the surviving original. Announced on 26 April 2011, the replica was built from design sketches and extensive research in collaboration with Porsche Engineering and Karosseriebau Drescher. Porsche’s announcement describes the generator sets as connected to petrol engines, supplying current to both wheel-hub motors and batteries. Porsche’s reconstruction announcement provides that account.
