What do Carrera, GTS, Turbo, GT3 and GT2 RS mean?
Carrera: the core 911 family
Carrera is the broad 911 road-car family. Porsche says the name comes from the Carrera Panamericana. The brand presents the 911’s 2+2 seating and front luggage compartment as part of its everyday-use proposition; Porsche USA’s configurator says they “always offer maximum suitability for everyday use.” That describes Porsche’s intended versatility, not a guarantee that every 911 suits every owner’s needs. GTS: a sportier specification
In the current comparison, GTS appears within the Carrera range, as well as in the Targa 4 GTS. It is useful to think of GTS as a sportier specification, not a separate family on the same level as Carrera or Turbo. The exact model matters: the listed Carrera GTS is rear-wheel drive, while the Carrera 4 GTS and Targa 4 GTS use all-wheel drive. Porsche lists 398 kW / 541 hp combined output for the Carrera GTS variants in that comparison. These details describe the referenced range, not every GTS from every generation. Porsche describes the Turbo family as combining sportiness with everyday usability. The international comparison lists the Turbo S and Turbo S Cabriolet with PDK automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. “Turbo” is a model designation in Porsche’s naming; by itself, it is not a dependable way to infer turbocharger technology across every Porsche vehicle. GT3 and GT3 RS: road cars with a motorsport focus
Porsche describes its 911 GT models as close to motorsport while remaining road-suitable, with lightweight construction emphasized. The current listings include GT3, GT3 Touring, GT3 RS and GT3 S/C. In the international comparison, GT3 is rear-wheel drive and available with manual or PDK transmission; the listed GT3 RS is rear-wheel drive and PDK-only. RS is a variant designation within the GT3 name here, not a separate family alongside Carrera or Turbo. Porsche international 911 comparison; Porsche Newsroom USA 911 range.
GT2 RS: a historical variant
GT2 RS is part of the 911’s history, but it is absent from Porsche Newsroom USA’s displayed current range. Porsche’s account of the 991 generation gives that generation’s GT2 RS 700 PS and a 340 km/h top speed, and called it the fastest series-production 911 in the model history at that time. Those are period specifications and a period claim, not current-model figures. Porsche’s history of the 997 generation also lists GT2 RS among that generation’s variants. What is the difference between a Porsche 911 Carrera and a GTS?
A Carrera is the core family; GTS identifies a sportier specification within that family in the current range. The listed Carrera GTS has more power than the listed base Carrera, but it is not enough to compare names alone: a GTS can differ by body style and drivetrain, and specifications change by market and model year. For example, Porsche’s international comparison lists rear-wheel drive for Carrera GTS and all-wheel drive for Carrera 4 GTS. Both are listed at 398 kW / 541 hp combined output. How the listed 911 models compare
The table reflects Porsche’s international comparison page and its displayed model years: many listings are 2027 models, while GT3 RS is labeled 2025. These are official listed specifications, not independent test results. Porsche USA’s configurator may show different model years, units, output figures and performance data. Acceleration figures below include Sport Chrono where Porsche specifies it; they are not a controlled apples-to-apples test.

- Body style: Coupe, Cabriolet and Targa are different body configurations. Porsche USA’s displayed range groups models across those categories, including Targa 4S and Targa 4 GTS. Porsche Newsroom USA 911 range.
- Drivetrain: In the listed range, “4” identifies all-wheel-drive variants; compare them with the corresponding rear-wheel-drive model rather than assuming the badge means the same configuration across all years.
- Transmission: Manual availability varies. The comparison lists manual and PDK options for GT3 and GT3 Touring, while GT3 RS is listed with PDK.
- Power type: Some outputs are identified as combustion-engine power and others as combined output. Do not treat these figures as identical measurement categories.
- Conditions and market: Check the same model year and region, and note whether the acceleration figure assumes Sport Chrono. Porsche’s regional pages may not use the same units or specifications.
- Intended use: The Carrera and Turbo descriptions emphasize road use and versatility; GT models are more explicitly tied to motorsport and lightweight construction. The right fit depends on whether daily usability, transmission choice or a stronger track focus matters most to you.
Where GT2 RS fits in the 911 lineup
Porsche USA’s displayed range includes GT3 variants but does not list a GT2 RS. That establishes its absence from that particular current lineup page, not the availability of used cars or what Porsche may offer in the future. For a concrete historical comparison, Porsche’s 2018 account of the 991 generation lists the GT3 RS at 520 PS and describes it as using a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine; those are 991-generation facts, not specifications for a current GT3 RS.
