What the price difference means
At the cited entry points, the 718 is the price-led option: Porsche USA lists the 2025 Cayman at $75,400 and Boxster at $77,600, compared with $135,500 for the 2027 911 Carrera. The comparison spans two model years, so it should not be read as a same-year price gap or a quote for a particular car.
These are starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices. They exclude options and charges such as taxes, title, registration, delivery, processing and handling, dealer charges and potential tariffs. Dealer pricing and available inventory can change what a buyer actually pays.

How performance compares—and where trims change the answer
For the base models cited, Porsche lists the 2027 Carrera at 388 hp and 3.9 seconds from 0–60 mph; the 2025 base Cayman and Boxster are listed at 300 hp and 4.7 seconds. Those manufacturer figures favor the base Carrera, but they do not establish how the cars compare in an independent test or in every driving condition.
The badges cover different outputs as well as different prices. Porsche lists the 2025 718 GTS 4.0 at 394 hp and the Spyder RS at 493 hp. In the 2027 911 range, the Carrera S is listed at 473 hp and the Carrera GTS at 532 hp combined. Those figures make a blanket claim that every 911 is more powerful than every 718 inaccurate. Compare the exact trims and model years under consideration.

Porsche also lists the 2027 base Carrera at 183 mph top track speed with summer tires. That is a manufacturer specification, not a claim about typical public-road driving.
Body style, layout and configuration
Choose between a Cayman coupe and Boxster roadster
The 718 choice includes the Cayman coupe and Boxster roadster. If open-top motoring is a priority, the Boxster gives the 718 range a distinct body-style option. Exact model and trim availability depends on market and model year.

Consider which 911 body style and trim you want
The Carrera range includes coupe and other body styles across its variants. The available combination depends on the specific model and market; verify the configuration you want rather than assuming every body style is offered with every trim.
Match drivetrain and gearbox to the specific car
Porsche lists the base 718s with rear-wheel drive and manual or automatic transmission. In the cited 911 range, the Carrera is rear-wheel drive with an automatic, the Carrera T has a manual, and the Carrera 4S has all-wheel drive with an automatic. These distinctions are trim-specific, not universal rules for every 911.

Do not infer practicality from the badges
Porsche describes the Carrera’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six as mounted at the rear. The cited pages do not provide directly comparable passenger or cargo-space measurements for the 718 and 911, so they do not establish which is more practical for your daily needs.

The 718 makes sense if price and body style lead
- Start with the 718 if your budget is closer to the cited entry prices and you want a Cayman coupe or Boxster roadster.
- Choose the specific 718 trim only after checking its price, output, transmission and availability for your model year.
Consider the 911 if its layout, output or variants matter more
- Consider a 911 Carrera if you value its rear-engine layout or the higher base output and quicker manufacturer-listed 0–60 mph time in this comparison.
- The 911 may also be the better fit if you want a particular variant, body style or drivetrain configuration and accept its higher cited starting MSRP.
Before making a final decision
- Set your budget, including options, taxes, fees and dealer pricing.
- Decide whether you want a coupe, roadster or a specific 911 body style.
- Choose a manual or automatic transmission and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive where available.
- Compare the same model year and similarly equipped trims, then check local inventory and the condition of any used car.
