Washington State Patrol reportedly determined from vehicle data that a 2022 Tesla Model S was operating in Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode when it struck a motorcycle on eastbound State Route 522 in Snohomish County, Washington, on April 19, 2024. The motorcyclist died. That reported finding establishes that FSD was engaged; it does not establish that the system caused the collision or determine legal responsibility.
What happened in the Snohomish County crash?
The collision involved a 2022 Tesla Model S and a motorcycle on eastbound SR 522 in Snohomish County. Cybernews reported that the motorcyclist was 28 years old and died in the crash. Its account of the Washington State Patrol finding was published July 31, 2024.
Cybernews reported that the Tesla driver told police he had been looking at his phone and that the vehicle was in self-driving mode. The outlet also said event-data-recorder information retrieved from the car confirmed that FSD was active. These details are attributed to Cybernews’ account of the police investigation; the underlying police report and vehicle data are not available in the reporting cited here. What does the reported FSD finding establish?
It indicates that, according to Cybernews’ account of Washington State Patrol’s determination, FSD was engaged at the time of the collision. It does not show by itself that FSD caused the crash, that a particular software defect occurred, or that the driver or any other party was legally responsible.

Engagement and causation are separate questions. Establishing what contributed to the collision would require evidence and analysis beyond the fact that a driver-assistance mode was active. The source cited here does not provide a causal finding or a final legal outcome.
What evidence is available publicly in the cited reporting?
The principal account is a secondary news report that attributes the engagement finding to Washington State Patrol and describes information from the car’s event data recorder.
