Volvo Cars and Geely remain central to its shareholder and industrial ecosystem, but the available disclosures do not establish their precise current ownership percentages. The company is growing sales and launching new models; its reported 2025 gross loss and continuing financing needs make execution and profitability key parts of its outlook.
How Polestar began
Polestar traces its roots to 1996, when it began as Flash Engineering, an independent racing team. Its relationship with Volvo grew from motorsport into road-car performance: Polestar developed performance software for Volvo, became the automaker’s performance-tuning partner in 2009, and was acquired by Volvo in 2015. In 2017, Polestar became a standalone company owned by Volvo Cars and Geely Group. This chronology comes from Polestar’s December 2025 investor presentation.
The modern company is a Swedish electric-performance-car brand headquartered in Gothenburg. It listed on Nasdaq in 2022. Its current identity is therefore newer than its name and performance roots: the racing and Volvo tuning history predates its shift to a standalone EV brand.
Who owns Polestar now?
Polestar is publicly listed, and its shareholder picture includes Geely Holding, Volvo Cars and Li Shufu’s private investment company. Polestar’s December 2025 presentation identifies these as significant shareholders but does not provide a post-2026-conversion percentage breakdown. It is accurate to describe Volvo Cars and Geely as important shareholders and partners; the reviewed disclosures do not support a definitive claim that either owns a particular current percentage or is Polestar’s sole owner.

That distinction matters because financing transactions have also changed the equity structure. In a 1 July 2026 capital update, Polestar said Geely Sweden Holdings AB converted approximately USD 300 million of loans and Volvo Cars approximately USD 66 million into Polestar equity on 30 June. The company said those transactions brought the parties’ loan conversions since the start of 2026 to approximately USD 640 million. The conversions increase equity and reduce debt, but they do not by themselves reveal the full resulting ownership split.
How the company operates
Polestar describes its model as asset-light and reliant on the wider Volvo Cars and Geely ecosystem for industrial capabilities. Its December 2025 presentation described production across China, the United States and South Korea, with European production planned for the Polestar 7. This reliance can give the brand access to established industrial capabilities, while making its relationship with the broader group an important part of how it manufactures and expands.

In its 1 July 2026 company description, Polestar said it operated in 31 markets globally and listed four current models: Polestar 2, 3, 4 and 5. Market count and model availability are company-reported; they do not establish that every model is available in every market.
What Polestar’s latest results show
Polestar’s FY2025 results, released 17 April 2026, show year-over-year growth in retail sales and revenue alongside a substantial gross loss. These are company-reported results for the named financial years, not forecasts.

The higher sales and revenue indicate commercial growth, but the reported gross loss shows that growth had not translated into positive gross profit in FY2025. Sales volume and revenue alone do not settle whether the business can reach sustainable profitability.

Polestar’s 17 April 2026 results release described market conditions as more challenging and said management expected low-double-digit retail-sales volume growth in 2026. That is forward-looking guidance, not a completed result. Its delivery will depend in part on demand and the company’s ability to execute its product plans.

The product schedule announced in the same release is the clearest near-term guide to the planned lineup. Launch timing is subject to change, and a planned model or variant should not be treated as already available.

Financing is another part of the outlook. The July 2026 update said approximately USD 660 million of Volvo Cars’ remaining shareholder loan matures in December 2031. The first-half conversions reduce debt, while the remaining shareholder loan and future funding needs remain relevant to the company’s capital structure. Polestar’s CEO characterized the conversions and extensions of existing facilities as improving its capital structure and lengthening its debt maturity profile; that is management’s assessment, not an independent evaluation.

In a 16 January 2025 strategy announcement, Polestar set targets that included 30–35% compound annual retail-sales growth for 2025–2027, positive adjusted EBITDA in 2025, and positive free cash flow after investment in 2027. These were targets, not reported outcomes. For 2025 performance, the later FY2025 results are the relevant evidence: Polestar reported growth in retail sales and revenue but a gross loss. The cited FY2025 summary does not establish achievement of the earlier adjusted-EBITDA target, and the 2027 free-cash-flow target remains a future objective rather than a result.
What to watch next
- Whether growth improves profitability: the FY2025 sales and revenue increases need to be considered alongside the gross loss, not in isolation.
- Model execution: the announced launches and timing are plans; delivery, market availability and customer demand will determine their commercial contribution.
- Capital and debt: loan conversions changed the capital structure, but they do not remove the importance of remaining obligations or future financing.
- Industrial execution: Polestar’s asset-light approach depends on the broader Volvo Cars and Geely ecosystem, and planned European production for Polestar 7 adds another execution milestone.
Polestar also said its Polestar Charge service offers access to one million charge points through partners, according to its FY2025 results release. That company-wide figure does not establish local coverage, availability for a particular driver, or access to every listed point on the same terms.
