The change came during a difficult sales period: Polestar reported a 40.2% year-over-year decline in Q1 global volumes. However, the company’s announcement did not say weak sales caused Ingenlath’s departure.
What happened to Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath?
Polestar announced on 28 August 2024 that Ingenlath had resigned as chief executive. The company named Michael Lohscheller as his successor, effective 1 October 2024. Polestar described Lohscheller as a former CEO of Opel, VinFast and Nikola in its leadership announcement.
Incoming chairman Winfried Vahland framed the appointment as a move into the company’s next phase, saying: “Polestar has experienced an exceptional start-up phase and with a broader model line-up, Michael Lohscheller is the ideal leader to guide Polestar into its next chapter.” That was Vahland’s stated rationale for the appointment; the announcement did not provide a detailed account of Ingenlath’s personal reasons for leaving or the board’s deliberations.
Did flagging sales cause Ingenlath to leave?
The available company announcement establishes that the leadership change occurred amid weak sales, not that sales caused it. Polestar did not link Ingenlath’s resignation to performance, and it did not announce severance terms or a fuller explanation of his departure. It would be speculation to present the sales figures as the reason he resigned.

How were Polestar sales performing around the change?
Q1 2024: a steep year-over-year decline
In preliminary, unaudited results published on 2 July 2024, Polestar reported 7,221 global volumes for Q1, down 40.2% from 12,076 in Q1 2023. Under the definition used in that release, global volumes included external sales and vehicles for internal use. The company attributed lower US volumes to weaker demand and the absence of sales to Hertz, and also reported lower revenue and higher discounts. It identified import duties and continued global EV pricing pressure as short-term headwinds. These were Polestar’s explanations, not independent findings. The same release said it delivered approximately 13,000 cars in Q2, 80% more than in Q1; that quarter-on-quarter comparison should not be confused with year-over-year growth. Polestar’s July 2024 release contains the figures and qualifications.
Full-year 2024: lower retail sales, with a stronger Q4
In January 2025, Polestar reported 44,851 retail sales for 2024, down 15% from 2023. Q4 retail sales were 12,256, up 5.3% year over year, while Q4 order intake rose 37.2%. Order intake reflects orders, not completed vehicle sales. Starting with this release, Polestar amended its global-volume definition to align with sector convention and described retail sales as sales to end customers. That change means the earlier global-volumes series and later retail-sales series should not be combined as though they used the same measure. What do Polestar’s later sales figures show?
Polestar’s 9 July 2026 release reported estimated H1 retail sales of 30,423, up 0.4% from 30,289 in H1 2025. Q2 2026 sales were 17,296, down 4.0% from 18,026 a year earlier. The company also reported 235 retail sites, 39% more than a year before. CEO Lohscheller called the H1 result “record sales,” while the year-over-year comparison showed only a slight increase and Q2 was lower; both details matter when interpreting the company’s wording.
