The Polestar 4 has no conventional rear window. Instead, a roof-mounted camera sends a live view to a high-definition screen where an interior rearview mirror would normally be. Polestar says removing the glass makes room for a longer panoramic roof and a more spacious rear cabin; whether the camera view feels better than a conventional mirror depends on the driver, and the design is not proof of a safety advantage.
Why the Polestar 4 has no rear window
Polestar says the design extends ideas first shown in its Precept concept: without rear glass, the panoramic roof can continue farther back over the rear occupants, creating what the company describes as a more immersive cabin and generous headroom. That is the automaker’s design rationale, not an independently measured finding that deleting the window causes a particular increase in passenger space.
At the car’s 18 April 2023 launch, Polestar Head of Design Maximilian Missoni said: “With Polestar Precept we previewed a stunning new occupant experience by removing the rear window and pushing the rear header, which plays an integral safety role, further back. This means that now, rear occupants can have a unique experience in our SUV coupé.” Polestar’s launch announcement describes the screen as a high-definition display fed in real time by a rear-facing camera mounted on the roof.
How you see behind you
In camera mode, the interior display shows the view from the camera on the upper trunk hatch. The 2026 owner manual says the image automatically adjusts toward the corresponding side when a turn signal is activated, to help the driver see more clearly and reduce blind spots. Car and Driver also describes the view shifting left or right when signaling, but that feature description is not an independent validation of a safety benefit.

The Polestar 4 still has an interior display in the usual rearview-mirror position, but its image comes from outside the cabin. In a week-long 2026 test, Tom’s Guide reviewer John Velasco described the image as crisp, detailed and wide. He also reported that his eyes took a couple of seconds to adjust when shifting focus from the road to the nearby screen. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a result that will apply to every driver.
Camera view or view of the rear passengers?
The display has two modes. Camera mode shows what is behind the car; regular mirror mode shows the rear seats. Switching to the passenger view means the driver cannot see behind the vehicle in that mirror, according to the 2026 Polestar 4 owner manual. It is therefore a choice of what the screen displays, not a way to keep both views in that mirror at once.

What the digital view does—and does not—solve
A camera can offer a different view from a conventional mirror, but Polestar’s manual warns that its field of view is limited and that judging the distance to objects can be difficult. It also says rearward visibility and awareness are essential and instructs drivers to keep the camera and relevant sensors clean and unobstructed. The camera image should not be treated as a substitute for attentive driving or for checking the surrounding area.
Weather and dirt are practical considerations. Polestar says the camera housing is shaped to direct airflow and keep water and grime away, and that rain and dirt should have little influence on the view. That is a design claim, not a guarantee that the camera cannot become obscured. If the image is blocked or unclear, the manual’s direction to keep the camera clear matters more than the housing’s intended airflow management.

Velasco’s test vehicle had two rear cameras: a high-mounted one for the interior display and another near the license plate for conventional reversing. That is an observation about the test vehicle’s setup, not a claim that every market or configuration has identical equipment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a rear-windowless car safer or better?
The available information supports a more limited conclusion: Polestar chose the arrangement to enable a longer glass roof and a different rear-cabin experience, and the camera supplies a live rearward image with a turn-signal-linked view adjustment. The manual also identifies limits involving field of view, distance judgment and obstruction. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison between the Polestar 4 and a conventional rear-window car, population-level safety statistics, or camera failure rates. So the evidence does not establish that removing the rear window makes the car safer or objectively better.

For a driver weighing the design, the practical questions are whether the screen is comfortable to focus on, whether its view feels useful, and whether the driver is content to rely on a camera image rather than seeing through rear glass. The first-look evidence gives one favorable report on image clarity alongside one reviewer’s adjustment period; it cannot settle individual comfort.
