Where is the Polestar 3 made?
The U.S. production site is Volvo Cars’ plant in Ridgeville, outside Charleston, South Carolina. Polestar announced on 14 August 2024 that Polestar 3 production had started there, making the SUV the first Polestar model produced on two continents, according to the company. Polestar’s production-start announcement said South Carolina output would complement manufacturing in Chengdu, China, and serve customers in the U.S. and Europe.
On 31 March 2026, Volvo Cars and Polestar said they intended to consolidate future Polestar 3 manufacturing at Ridgeville. The announcement described Chengdu as a production site at that time. Neither company specified when consolidation would finish or said it was already complete. Volvo Cars’ announcement and Polestar’s announcement framed the plan as an efficiency measure.
When did Polestar 3 production start in the U.S.?
Polestar announced the start on 14 August 2024. Earlier, on 27 February 2024, the company said production had begun in Chengdu and forecast an additional South Carolina start in mid-2024. It also reported that an early production test series at the U.S. factory had been completed successfully. That February update was a readiness and timing statement, not the announcement that U.S. production had begun. Polestar’s February update records that earlier phase.

Is the Polestar 3 made in America?
Yes: Polestar 3 production began at a U.S. factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina, in 2024. The qualification matters because the company’s August 2024 announcement described American production alongside Chengdu output, rather than saying the U.S. was then the sole production location. The March 2026 announcements later stated an intention to consolidate global production at Ridgeville, but do not establish that the change has been completed.

Volvo Cars and Polestar cited efficiency as the reason for their announced plan. Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson said consolidation would help generate efficiencies for both companies. This is the companies’ stated rationale; their announcements do not quantify expected savings or report independently measured results.

The announcements also provide no Polestar 3 production-volume or employment figures for Ridgeville. They do not give comparable capacity or unit-output figures for Ridgeville and Chengdu.
