Polaris’ Six-Wheeled MRZR Alpha 6×6: What It Is—and What the Jackal Missile Is

Polaris announced an MRZR Alpha 6x6 concept demonstrator for expanded payloads. A reported Jackal display involved a missile, not a remotely operated grenade system.

No: Polaris announced a six-wheeled MRZR Alpha 6×6 concept demonstrator, not an RZR equipped with a remotely operated grenade system. A report from AUSA 2024 linked the displayed vehicle to Northrop Grumman’s Jackal, which is a compact precision-strike missile and one-way attack munition—not a grenade launcher. The available sources do not confirm that the Jackal setup was operational or fielded.

What Polaris built

On May 6, 2024, Polaris Government & Defense announced that it had designed, manufactured and delivered several MRZR Alpha expanded-payload concept demonstrators to U.S. Special Forces and Marines. The six-wheeled version is called the MRZR Alpha 6×6. Polaris describes it as a two-seat tactical vehicle intended to carry larger mission loads than the four-wheel Alpha 4. Polaris’ announcement presents it as a concept demonstrator, not as a production RZR or a confirmed operational configuration.

RZR and MRZR are different Polaris vehicle lines. Polaris lists the MRZR Alpha within its military vehicle family; the company’s Government and Defense Vehicles page provides the broader defense-vehicle context. The vehicle in the announcement is an MRZR Alpha, so calling it an RZR obscures the model identity and its military purpose.

What the six-wheel layout is meant to do

Polaris framed the extra axle as a way to increase carrying capacity while retaining mobility in difficult terrain. Its figures below are company-published specifications or targets for the concept demonstrator; the sources reviewed do not establish independent testing of the 6×6’s payload or performance.

Claim Polaris’ stated figure How to read it
Expanded cargo bed 65 percent larger than the MRZR Alpha 4’s Polaris Government & Defense, 2024; company comparison.
Total payload 3,600 pounds Polaris’ target total payload, not an independently verified test result.
Extended cargo-bed payload 3,000 pounds Polaris’ stated capacity for the extended bed.
MRZR Alpha 4 bed-payload comparison 600 pounds Polaris’ stated bed-payload figure for the Alpha 4.
Parts commonality More than 90 percent Polaris’ stated commonality with the base MRZR Alpha.

Polaris says the 6×6’s third axle and short wheelbase reduce contact pressure per tire, a design choice intended to help on soft soil, mud and bogs. The company also says the vehicle would maintain top speed and air transportability. Those are manufacturer claims about the concept, not independently established results.

What was reported at AUSA—and what Jackal is

An October 24, 2024, report by Infodefensa connected an MRZR Alpha 6×6 shown at AUSA 2024 with Northrop Grumman’s Jackal. Northrop Grumman describes Jackal as a compact, turbojet-powered precision-strike missile and one-way attack munition. That makes “grenade system” an inaccurate description.

The connection should be treated as a reported display association, not proof that Polaris integrated Jackal as an operational vehicle weapon. The official Polaris announcement and Northrop Grumman product page do not establish the exact vehicle-mounted configuration or whether it was operational. The Infodefensa report is available in Spanish: its AUSA 2024 coverage describes the displayed MRZR as equipped with Jackal missiles.

Mission loads and autonomy are separate claims

Polaris lists mortar systems, command and control, UAS or drone launch, counter-UAS, and forward arming and refuelling among possible uses for the expanded-payload vehicle. These are intended mission possibilities, not evidence that all those systems were installed or tested on the displayed 6×6.

Polaris also says the MRZR Alpha was modified for drive-by-wire integration with autonomy kits from Applied Research Associates and Forterra, while retaining the ability for an operator to drive it manually when required. In Polaris’ words, “As a robotic platform, the MRZR Alpha is technology agnostic. We can – and do – provide the by-wire vehicle, ready to accept autonomy kits of various levels to multiple industry partners for continued development and advancement of the capability for the warfighter.” This autonomy work is distinct from the Jackal display report: Polaris’ announcement does not say Jackal is remotely operated, and it does not substantiate a remotely operated grenade system.
