The project is expected to begin in 2027 and, if completed as planned, bring the site’s annual capacity to about 6 million car tires by 2033 while adding around 1,000 jobs.
What Pirelli plans to build
The September 22, 2026 announcement describes an expansion of the Rome plant—not a new U.S. factory. Pirelli’s board approved the plan by majority vote; the company release names three dissenting members: Zhang Haitao, Xi Xiaohong and Wang Kun. The investment is approximately €1 billion, which Pirelli translates as around $1.2 billion. The headline figure of “over $1 billion” is a rounded expression of that approximate conversion, not a separate project estimate. Pirelli’s announcement
The project is planned in two production phases. Their stated capacity targets are additions at full operation, not current output figures.
| Phase | Planned production | Timing and capacity |
|---|---|---|
| MIRS production | Scale production using Pirelli’s proprietary Modular Integrated Robotized System. | Capacity is expected to increase progressively from 2028, ultimately adding 3 million tires annually. |
| Conventional production | Build a fully automated facility for premium products. | Designed to add another 3 million tires annually at full operation. |
Pirelli’s overall target is approximately 6 million car tires of annual capacity at completion in 2033. The company has not published a cost breakdown between the two phases or a separate schedule for the conventional facility in the announcement.

When capacity and jobs are expected
The schedule is phased rather than an immediate jump in output. Pirelli says MIRS capacity will rise progressively from 2028. Georgia’s governor’s office expects the bulk of hiring to begin in 2029 and projects full operations in 2033. These are forecasts; the announcements do not establish that construction, hiring or capacity milestones have been completed.
- 2027: Planned start of the expansion work, according to Pirelli.
- 2028 onward: MIRS production capacity is expected to increase progressively.
- 2029: Georgia expects the bulk of hiring to begin.
- 2033: Full operations are projected by Georgia, while Pirelli targets approximately 6 million tires of annual capacity at completion.
Pirelli estimates around 1,000 additional jobs. Georgia’s governor’s office says Pirelli currently employs 234 people in the state across manufacturing, innovation and headquarters operations. The existing headcount and forecast new jobs are distinct figures; the releases do not provide a phase-by-phase hiring breakdown. The plant is at 100 Pirelli Drive in Rome, Georgia. Why Pirelli says it is expanding in the United States
Pirelli describes the U.S. as a growth market for its “High Value” tire segment and says the country represents approximately 40% of global volumes in that segment. That percentage is the company’s characterization, not an independently validated market statistic in the cited announcements.
The company says the investment is intended to support its “local-for-local” strategy, strengthen supply-chain resilience and serve demand for technologically advanced products made in the United States. Claudio Zanardo, CEO of Pirelli North America, called the U.S. one of the company’s most important markets and said the expansion would reinforce its local-for-local strategy, in remarks reported by Georgia’s governor’s office. Those comments explain Pirelli’s stated rationale; they are not an independent assessment of future demand or project returns.

- Features four wide longitudinal grooves that quickly remove water from the tire for better traction and stability on wet roads
- Built with an optimized pitch sequence and Pirelli's Noise Cancelling System (PNCS) that reduces road noises to create a quiet, comfortable ride for drivers and passengers
- High density of sipes for better wet and snow traction
- Curved grooves and bridges on tread increase safety and control on snow
- Frequently used by drivers of the BMW X6, Ford F-150, Jaguar E-Pace, Kia Telluride, Lamborghini Urus, Land Rover Discovery, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volkswagen Atlas, and Volvo XC60
What Cyber Tyre means for the plant—and drivers
Cyber Tyre is included among the technologies planned for the expanded facility. Pirelli describes it as a hardware-and-software system that gathers information from sensors embedded in tires, processes it through proprietary software and algorithms, then communicates in real time with vehicle electronics. The company says that system can enable functions integrated with driving and control systems. Pirelli’s May 6, 2026 Cyber Tyre announcement
Pirelli’s May announcement said Rome would begin producing connected tires incorporating Cyber Tyre. That manufacturing statement does not identify consumer tire models, compatible vehicles, retail availability or demonstrated performance outcomes. The September expansion announcement likewise does not establish that a driver can currently buy a Cyber Tyre product.

Pirelli says the plan will not affect its 2026 targets and expects its capital-expenditure-to-revenue ratio for 2027–2033 to remain substantially in continuity with previous periods. Those are the company’s financial expectations, not an independent assessment of affordability, returns or how the project may perform.
