What happened to Cybertrucks with magnets on the body?
In a report published November 25, 2024, ExtremeTech described owners finding rust-like discoloration and pitting after leaving advertising or decorative magnets on their trucks. One owner, posting as “Cybertooth,” said he removed advertising magnets after a month and found “rust and corrosion.” He reported that cleaning took away some discoloration but left white pits and a rough texture. Other owners in the discussion described similar damage beneath magnets.
The accounts establish that visible surface damage has been reported; they do not establish how often it occurs or how quickly it develops in different conditions. No controlled corrosion-rate or failure-rate statistic is reported in the cited coverage.
Why can a magnet cause a problem on stainless steel?
Stainless steel can corrode under some conditions. A magnet may hold moisture, road film, salt or other contaminants against the surface, leaving them in contact for longer than they would be on an exposed panel. That is a plausible explanation for the reported damage, based on the owner accounts and Tesla’s contamination warning; it is not a mechanism confirmed by a published laboratory test.

Notebookcheck’s account of Tesla’s owner-manual guidance notes that the Cybertruck’s exterior lacks the protective clear coat used on most vehicles. Tesla’s quoted instruction warns owners to remove corrosive substances immediately rather than wait for the next full wash:
“To prevent damage to the exterior, immediately remove corrosive substances (such as grease, oil, bird droppings, tree resin, dead insects, tar spots, road salt, industrial fallout, etc.). Do not wait until Cybertruck is due for a complete wash. If necessary, use denatured alcohol to remove tar spots and stubborn grease stains, then immediately wash the area with water and a mild, non-detergent soap to remove the alcohol.”

Notebookcheck’s report reproduces this guidance. The manual’s warning addresses corrosive substances generally; it does not specifically say that magnets cause corrosion.
Does corrosion beneath a magnet weaken the Cybertruck?
The cited reports document cosmetic damage—discoloration, pits and a rough surface. They do not provide a controlled test measuring structural strength before and after magnet exposure. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat the reported marks as proof that the truck’s structure or armor has been compromised.

Nor do the reports provide a tested repair procedure for pitting. Tesla’s quoted guidance covers removing contaminants and washing the area; it does not explain how to restore a pitted finish.
What should owners do about magnets and contamination?
Before using a body magnet
- Avoid leaving advertising or decorative magnets on the stainless-steel body for extended periods, particularly where moisture or road grime may collect beneath them. This precaution follows from the owner reports and the manual’s prompt-removal advice; it is not a manufacturer-issued magnet ban.
- If you use a magnet, remove it periodically and check the contact area for trapped moisture, dirt or discoloration.
If you find residue or corrosion-like marks
- Remove the magnet and any visible contaminant promptly; Tesla’s quoted instruction says not to wait for the next complete wash.
- Wash the area with water and mild, non-detergent soap. For tar spots or stubborn grease, the quoted manual guidance permits denatured alcohol, followed immediately by washing with water and mild, non-detergent soap.
- If pits or roughness remain, do not assume that cleaning has restored the surface. The cited guidance does not specify a repair for pitting.
Is “apocalypse-ready” the same as maintenance-free?
No. The phrase describes a rugged image, not immunity to surface contamination. Tesla’s quoted care advice calls for prompt removal of corrosive substances, while owner accounts show visible damage associated with magnets left in place. That points to a practical distinction: a vehicle may be marketed for rugged use while still requiring attentive care of its exterior finish.

Specialist upgrades are a separate question from routine cosmetic protection. In August 2024, UP.FIT and Archimedes Defense announced STING packages for preorder: STING Baja combines an INVINCIBLE off-road package with a frunk-mounted 800V genset; STING Protector adds bolt-on steel armor; and STING APC adds steel and ceramic armor with IED/mine protection. Those announced packages concern off-road capability, power or armor—not a demonstrated solution for magnet-related surface corrosion.
