PerthNow published CCTV-focused coverage the next day; ABC News later reported that the driver, Jamie Eric Glasfurd, pleaded guilty to dangerous-driving charges, including causing death and grievous bodily harm.
What happened in the Pier Street crash?
The crash happened at about 6:30pm on Friday, 20 August 2021, near the Pier Street and Murray Street intersection. Police told ABC News that a Land Rover travelling on Pier Street mounted the footpath and hit a parked Toyota Corolla. The impact propelled the Corolla into people dining outside My Place Bar & Restaurant. The Land Rover continued a short distance, struck another parked car, rolled and came to rest on its roof. ABC News reported the police account on 21 August 2021; PerthNow published its CCTV-focused report on 22 August.
PerthNow described the street as busy shortly before the collision, at around 6:25pm, and said the SUV had travelled east on Murray Street before turning right onto Pier Street. Its account of the vehicle going through a red light was attributed to witnesses, not presented as a definitive police finding. The report also described people rushing to help after the crash, including someone prying open the overturned vehicle’s door to provide first aid.
What did the CCTV show?
PerthNow’s 22 August report described footage of the black 4WD striking cars and rolling, followed by people moving to help those involved. The CCTV was also shown in court, according to ABC News’ report on the February 2023 proceedings. These accounts establish that footage was published and later shown in court; they do not, by themselves, establish the driver’s intent, speed, impairment or every detail of the vehicle’s path.

How many people were killed or injured?
A 71-year-old man died at the scene, according to police information reported by ABC News. Early reports described the other casualties differently, so their counts should not be combined as though they used the same definition:
- ABC News, 21 August 2021: reported that four people, including the driver, were taken to Royal Perth Hospital, while others were treated at the scene.
- PerthNow, 22 August 2021: described five other pedestrians as seriously injured or taken to hospital. It reported that a 41-year-old man remained in serious condition at Fiona Stanley Hospital and that four other men, believed to be in their 20s, had also been taken to hospital.
The outlets’ reports distinguish hospital transport, treatment at the scene and injured pedestrians differently. The figures above retain each outlet’s wording rather than imply a single reconciled total.

What happened in the case after the crash?
Initial charges in August 2021
ABC News reported on 21 August that the 60-year-old driver had been taken into custody and charged with dangerous driving causing death in circumstances of aggravation and no authority to drive.
Further charges in September 2021
On 15 September, PerthNow reported additional counts: two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation, and a charge relating to prescribed illicit drugs in his blood.

Guilty pleas reported in February 2023
ABC News reported on 14 February 2023 that Jamie Eric Glasfurd pleaded guilty to several dangerous-driving charges, including causing death and grievous bodily harm. He entered the pleas before the second day of a jury trial in the Supreme Court in Perth. The report said prosecutor Brett Tooker told the court Glasfurd had alcohol and methylamphetamine in his system, and that an examination of the SUV showed “no defects”. ABC also reported that CCTV of the collision was shown in court. Those details were reported from proceedings, not independently established here from toxicology or vehicle-inspection records. The report also identified the posted speed limit on Pier Street as 40 km/h.
