It groups the developments into hard-sided designs, electric truck campers, split cap and rooftop-tent systems, and ultralight full-floor campers. Those categories are still the clearest way to understand the market, but the specific models, prices and weights it reports are nearly three years old and need checking before you rely on them.
Start with the format, not the model name
Most confusion around this category comes from treating four different products as interchangeable. A topper, a full-floor pickup camper, a truck bed tent and a complete expedition truck solve different problems, and each carries different weight, cost and installation trade-offs.

Hard-sided versus fabric-sided pop-up designs
New Atlas argues that hard-sided pop-up walls may protect better against weather, wildlife and noise than fabric walls. The same coverage notes the cost in added weight and money. These are qualitative judgments made in the roundup, not results from controlled testing, so treat them as a reasonable starting point rather than a measured ranking. If you camp somewhere with heavy rain, insects or animal traffic, the wall material matters more than it does for a dry, fair-weather trip.
Topper versus full-floor camper
A topper covers the bed and gives you a sleeping area. A full-floor camper adds a floor and enclosed living space, which changes how you get in and out, where you can stand and how the unit is used when parked away from camp. The TC Truck Camper is the clearest example of the middle ground: New Atlas positions its floor-equipped, teardrop-style design between simple toppers without floors and more fully equipped lightweight campers.

Electric truck campers and conventional builds
An electric truck camper depends on its base vehicle as much as on the camper itself. The EarthCruiser GMC Hummer EV camper is the example named in the coverage. Before treating any electric build as something you can buy, confirm whether it is a production product, a conversion or a concept. The available coverage does not establish that electric pickups had broad camper support in 2023, so do not assume that a camper designed for one electric truck will fit another.
Split cap and rooftop-tent systems
Modular systems separate the cap or rack from the rooftop sleeping component. You can use the base unit alone for hauling or gear storage, then add the sleeping section when you camp. The benefit is flexibility; the cost is that you must confirm each part is compatible with your rack, your bed rails and your payload, because the two pieces together add load to the truck.

Weight and payload
New Atlas describes an approximate 600 lb (272 kg) weight range for the TC Truck Camper, Enduro SuperTourer and Scout Tuktut examples. That is a historical, approximate comparison across different configurations, not a like-for-like spec sheet. The DOT Alpaca was reported at a starting base weight of around 375 lb (170 kg) in April 2023. Base weight is only the start: options, water, gear and passengers all count against your payload.
How to check whether a camper fits your truck
- Find the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver’s door jamb of your truck. It lists the payload capacity for that specific build.
- Add the camper’s current dry weight from the manufacturer’s written specification for your exact model and configuration, including any installed options.
- Add the weight you expect to carry: water, cookware, fuel, batteries, bikes, passengers and personal gear.
- Subtract the total from the payload capacity. If the result is negative or leaves very little margin, choose a lighter model or a different truck.
- Confirm the mounting system and bed-rail or frame requirements with the manufacturer before ordering.
Prices and specifications are historical
New Atlas reported launch prices for the TC Truck Camper of $10,800 for a solo model and $12,000 for a double-bed model in May 2023. These were launch prices from that point in time, not current quotes, and they may have changed since. Specifications for any model may also have been revised, so the manufacturer’s current product page or written specification is the only reliable source for price, weight, warranty and availability.

New Atlas’s roundup and linked product coverage name or describe the following: the Scout Tuktut, Enduro SuperTourer, TC Truck Camper, Tune Outdoors M1, EarthCruiser’s GMC Hummer EV camper, Hardsider, Dirtbox Expedition Series, and several adventure-truck builds. This is not a verified, ordered list of twelve picks, and the roundup’s ranking is not reproduced here. Treat these names as a map of the 2023 landscape, and check each manufacturer’s current lineup before assuming a model is still in production.

- Payload rating of your specific truck, not the rating for the model line
- Bed length, cab configuration and rack or rail requirements
- Whether the product is a topper, a full-floor camper, a tent or a complete vehicle build
- Regional availability and dealer support, since options and distribution vary by market
The 2023 roundup is still useful for understanding the categories. For a purchase decision, use it as a starting list and verify every current specification with the manufacturer.
