Gadget Review’s April 11, 2025 list names 15 motorcycles or model families it considers unreliable, but it is an editorial ranking—not a measured reliability study or verified expert consensus. It provides no comparative failure rates, sample sizes, or linked primary evidence for the individual claims. Treat its entries as leads to investigate on a specific bike, not proof that every motorcycle in a model line is unreliable.

What the list can—and cannot—tell you

The ranking brings together very different cases: alleged mechanical faults, electrical complaints, maintenance demands, safety and handling concerns, and difficulties finding parts or specialist service. Those are not interchangeable measures of reliability. The article also mixes individual model years with broad families and generations, and says some later versions improved.

For a used motorcycle, the year, market, maintenance history, modifications, completed repairs, and present condition can matter more than a model name on a list. Gadget Review does not provide enough underlying evidence to establish how often any of its reported problems occur or to compare these bikes on a common scale.

Which motorcycles does the list flag?

The entries below follow Gadget Review’s ranking order. Each concern is a claim made by that article, not an independently confirmed finding.

15. CFMoto 300NK

Gadget Review reports loose fasteners, electrical problems, and stator failures before 10,000 miles on early examples, while saying newer models improved. The article does not define the affected years precisely or provide owner data that establishes a failure rate.

14. Yamaha Virago XV535

The article cites starter-clutch trouble, carburetor issues, and sealing problems, while emphasizing that individual bikes vary considerably. On an older motorcycle, condition and maintenance records are essential context; the list does not separate age-related wear from a model-wide defect.

13. Triumph Trident 660

Gadget Review reports first-year electrical and dashboard issues, power concerns, missed quick-shifts, and oil use, and says later warranty or recall fixes addressed some problems. It does not link campaign details, so check the exact year, VIN, repair paperwork, and applicable market rather than assuming a particular bike was affected or repaired.

11. KTM RC 390

Gadget Review singles out head-gasket failures in 2015–2016 examples, cooling concerns, and vibration-related trim problems, and says later models improved. Treat the specific year range as a reason to check service records and relevant manufacturer documentation—not as proof of the condition of an individual bike.

10. Royal Enfield Himalayan

The article alleges frame cracking, rocker-arm wear, and corrosion in the first generation, with later versions said to have improved. It supplies no primary campaign information or incidence data, so distinguish the generation and verify the particular motorcycle’s history and condition.

9. Ducati Panigale V4

Gadget Review refers to fire-related recalls on first-generation bikes, specialist valve service, and reported electrical faults. Check recall status against the specific VIN and market, and review the service history; the article does not establish the frequency of these problems.

8. Suzuki TL1000S

The list combines concerns about rear-damper heat and high-speed instability on early 1997–1998 examples with assertions about recalls and modifications. Because this entry includes handling and safety concerns as well as reliability, inspect the exact bike’s modification and repair records and verify any recall by VIN.

7. MV Agusta F4

Gadget Review cites ECU and cooling problems and limited access to qualified service. It does not quantify owner reports. For a prospective owner, the availability of parts and a capable specialist may be as important as the likelihood of a mechanical fault.

6. BMW R1250R

The article raises concerns about variable valve timing, shaft-drive splines, and electrical components exposed to water. It gives no affected-year range or failure rate, so these broad allegations should not be read as evidence that a particular R1250R has—or will develop—a fault.

5. Early-2000s Harley-Davidson Dyna

Gadget Review mentions cam-chain tensioner, oil-leak, and electrical issues, and says post-2006 Dynas improved. It includes one $2,300 repair-season anecdote, which is neither a typical repair estimate nor a statistic. Confirm the exact engine and year, inspect repair records, and do not apply the anecdote as a general ownership cost.

4. Buell Blast

The article criticizes the Blast’s braking and handling and refers to designer Erik Buell destroying a motorcycle at a promotional event. Those are rideability and safety claims, not a reliability measurement; the article does not provide direct evidence for its interpretation of the event.

3. Cleveland Cycle Works

Gadget Review claims dealers said nearly half of new bikes needed service before delivery, and also raises braking and parts-network concerns. It names no dealers and gives no denominator, dates, or survey method, so the “nearly half” figure is unsupported by the article and should not be treated as established data.

2. Ducati Scrambler Sixty2

The article claims valve adjustment is due every 7,500 miles at $400 per service, says maintenance costs are comparatively high, and states that the model was discontinued in 2020. It provides no service-schedule or cost citation. Check the owner’s manual for the exact model year and ask a local Ducati service provider about current labor and parts costs before using those figures to budget.

1. KTM street bikes before 2018

This is a broad category rather than one motorcycle. Gadget Review alleges leaks, overheating, and electrical failures in early KTM street models, particularly Duke-series bikes, and says newer models improved. Narrow the concern to the exact model and year, then verify it against that bike’s records and applicable manufacturer information.

How to check a used motorcycle before buying

Use a model-specific list entry to shape questions, not to substitute for checking the motorcycle itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact bike. Record its model year, model or generation, VIN, and country or market of sale. A broad label such as “early KTM street bike” is not specific enough to establish which issues may apply.
  2. Check recalls and campaigns. NHTSA’s VIN lookup can show unresolved recalls. Its year, make, and model search can also surface recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications. Ask the seller for repair documentation for any completed campaign; an unresolved-recall search is not a complete repair history.
  3. Understand the lookup’s limits. NHTSA says its results may omit recalls already repaired, some newly announced campaigns before all affected VINs are identified, recalls more than 15 years old unless coverage is extended, certain small or specialty manufacturers, non-safety campaigns, and international recalls. A clean result is not a general reliability certificate.
  4. Read complaints in context. NHTSA describes consumer complaints as one input to its risk-based review and possible investigations. A complaint—or a cluster of complaints—is not by itself a finding that every bike of that model is defective or a comparative reliability score.
  5. Review maintenance and repair records. Ask what work was done, when, and by whom. For concerns raised in the list, look specifically for relevant documentation—such as cooling-system, electrical, valve-service, or recall work—without assuming that a reported issue applies to every year or bike.
  6. Arrange a pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified motorcycle mechanic inspect the individual bike and discuss model-specific concerns. For rare or specialist machines, confirm that local parts and service support are realistically available before committing.

How to use a reliability list without overreading it

  • Separate safety or handling allegations from mechanical reliability and routine maintenance demands.
  • Give more weight to a documented, model-year-specific campaign or repair record than to an unquantified report.
  • Check whether the concern applies to the bike’s generation and whether a documented repair or update changes the picture.
  • Judge the actual motorcycle by its records, inspection, and condition—not by an editorial rank alone.
