The 50cc minibike itself dates to 1982; claims of a CT125-based revival remain rumor, not an announced Honda return.
Why the Motra is getting attention again
A rare U.S. used-bike listing prompted a 2026 retrospective by Moto.it, which also mentioned rumors of a Motra-style machine based on the modern CT125. That article is not a Honda launch announcement. Honda’s official archive lists the Motra as a 1982 model, and the company’s launch release confirms it went on sale in Japan on June 10, 1982.
Moto.it says its feature photos show an example advertised in the United States. The photos document a used motorcycle, not a newly released model. The available evidence does not establish the listing’s current status or the bike’s ownership.
What made Honda’s Motra different
Honda designed the Motra around carrying gear for outdoor use. Its most distinctive features were large pipe-frame carriers at both ends. Honda said the front carrier was fixed to the frame to help maintain stable handling when loaded. The company’s launch description called the machine an outdoor-life motorcycle equipped to carry a variety of tools.

Instead of relying on a single three-speed gearbox, the Motra combined three regular gears with a three-speed low sub-transmission. A one-touch lever let the rider switch between high and low ranges, giving the compact motorcycle a wider choice of gearing for utility use.

These are factory specifications in Honda’s June 9, 1982 announcement. Honda also noted a 30 kg maximum load for 50 cc motorcycles. That figure should not be confused with the carriers’ apparent capacity or treated as permission to exceed applicable limits.

Is Honda bringing the Motra back?
No official revival is established by the available sources. Moto.it’s CT125-platform suggestion is explicitly rumor. Honda’s official Motra product archive indexes the historic model under 1982; it does not announce a new Motra.
Moto.it estimates the original model lasted about two years and reports preserved examples valued around €5,000 based on recent U.S. auction results. Those are the outlet’s secondary-source claims, not a Honda production record or a current appraisal. No verified production total or measured count of surviving bikes is established here, so “rare” is best understood as a description of the example that drew attention—not a quantified rarity claim.

What to check if you are restoring one
Honda’s original tire specification is 5.40-10-4 PR for both wheels, but that alone does not confirm that a modern tire will fit or suit a particular motorcycle. Before buying a replacement, verify the exact size, load rating, construction, wheel fitment, and intended use. The factory figures above describe the 1982 model; they are not a substitute for checking the condition and requirements of an individual surviving bike.
