The Magnolia 4 is an alternate history on two wheels
Designed by JT Nesbitt and developed by New Orleans-based Bienville Studios, the Magnolia 4 is built around a question: what might American luxury motorcycles look like if the country’s early inline-four tradition had continued into the modern era?

The answer is long, low and unusually sculptural. The engine stretches across the motorcycle as both its visual centerpiece and a major structural element. Its proportions recall the big American fours built by companies such as Ace, Cleveland, Henderson, Indian, Militaire and Pierce, but the engineering brief belongs to the 21st century.

Bienville describes the Magnolia 4 as a New Orleans-inspired, New Orleans-made motorcycle and says only 12 examples will be built. The project’s roots reach back to sketches Nesbitt says he began in 1999, with a small development team assembled around the designer, engine specialist Jeff Sperry, CAD specialist Mark Dowey and engineer David McMahon during the 2023 development phase.
Why an American inline-four is such a big deal
For much of modern motorcycling, “American motorcycle” has effectively meant a large V-twin. The Magnolia 4 deliberately takes a different route. Its four cylinders are arranged in a straight line, recalling an era when American manufacturers used inline-fours as high-end, technically ambitious machines.
The historical lineage matters because the Magnolia is not merely using four cylinders to chase a performance number. The configuration gives the motorcycle its distinctive length and low-slung stance, while connecting it to a branch of American motorcycle history that disappeared before World War II. American inline-four production ended more than eight decades ago; Bienville’s stated ambition is to imagine what that lineage might have become.
That makes “American muscle” an apt visual description, but not a dyno claim. No verified horsepower, torque, acceleration or top-speed figures were established for the production Magnolia 4 in the available research.
Inside the 1,750cc inline-four
The Magnolia 4’s engine displaces 1,750cc and uses an air/oil-cooled inline-four layout. Bienville says it has an undersquare bore-and-stroke relationship, a configurable built-up crankshaft, a non-hemispherical combustion chamber and a single overhead camshaft driven by bevel gears. The valves are directly actuated.
Those details make the engine unusual even before considering its size. The bevel-driven camshaft is an especially deliberate choice: it is mechanically visible in the design language and recalls the exposed, gear-driven engineering associated with early high-end motorcycles. Direct valve actuation also keeps the mechanism compact and purposeful, although the available material does not establish service intervals or adjustment procedures for production machines.
Cooling without a conventional radiator-centered layout
Bienville’s cooling solution is one of the Magnolia’s most distinctive engineering ideas. Rather than relying on a conventional external radiator arrangement, the design uses complex oil feeds and drains, under-piston oil jets and cooling fins machined into the engine structure. The crankcase is finned, and the company describes internal oil cooling as part of the overall strategy.

The unified cylinder-and-head structure is machined from 6000-series aluminum alloy using five-axis CNC equipment, according to Bienville. The stated goal is to make the large engine more than a power source: it becomes a structural and visual component of the chassis.
These are manufacturer-supplied specifications and design intentions, not independent thermal or durability test results. There are no verified published figures here for operating temperatures, oil capacity, service life or sustained high-load performance.

- SIZE CHART: Choose the working gloves that fit your palm according to the size chart. These gloves are designed for comfort and dexterity during yard work, gardening, or outdoor tasks.
A crankshaft that can be configured
The configurable crankshaft is another defining feature. Bienville and independent coverage describe a built-up crankshaft that can be configured in different ways. It fits the project’s broader philosophy: the engine is not optimized around the assumptions of a high-volume production motorcycle.
However, “configurable” should not be read as a promise of multiple rider-selectable modes. The available evidence does not establish that customers can switch crankshaft configurations on demand, nor does it provide tested power or torque comparisons between them. It establishes the feature and its design rationale, but not a performance chart.

The engine’s character is matched by a deliberately unconventional rider interface. The Magnolia 4 uses a three-speed transmission, with Bienville describing a combination of constant-mesh and sliding-mesh arrangements. The reduced number of gears is intended to simplify the mechanism and suit the engine’s anticipated low- and mid-range torque delivery.
Instead of a conventional foot shifter, the rider operates the gearbox with a tank-mounted shift lever. It is an unmistakably antique reference, but it is not merely decorative. The control layout is part of Bienville’s attempt to make the motorcycle feel like a plausible evolution of an early American luxury machine.
A centrifugal clutch is intended to make the three-speed system more approachable by removing the need to master a conventional hand- or foot-operated clutch. The result should be a more deliberate, tactile riding experience with fewer gear changes, although no independent road test was available to assess how the system behaves in traffic, at low speed or during hill starts.
Kick-starting is central—but not necessarily the only option
Kick-starting is another core part of the Magnolia 4’s identity. Bienville presents it as a way to preserve direct human interaction with the machine while reducing dependence on batteries and complex electrical systems.
There is an important qualification. Some secondary descriptions characterize the concept as kick-start-only, but the reservation information captured for the project includes at least one reserved chassis specified with “kick start with optional electric start.” The safest conclusion is that kick-starting is fundamental to the design, while an electric-start option may be available on at least some customer builds. It should not be stated that every production Magnolia lacks an electric starter.
Its suspension is modern beneath the antique silhouette
The Magnolia 4 may evoke early American motorcycles, but its chassis is not a simple recreation of period hardware. Bienville describes a multi-link suspension system using hydro-pneumatic cylinders, common front and rear fork members and a separate suspension system beneath the rider.
The saddle is independently sprung. A composite leaf spring works with its own hydro-pneumatic cylinder, allowing the rider’s seat to move separately from the wheels. Bienville says the motorcycle provides five inches of wheel travel at both the front and rear, with additional movement supplied by the sprung saddle.

The design brief also describes needle-roller-bearing pivot points rather than conventional bushings and emphasizes controlling unsprung weight. The same suspension members are used at all four corners, according to the brief, giving the motorcycle a visually unified appearance while potentially simplifying low-volume manufacturing.
Again, the distinction between specification and proof matters. The five-inch travel figure and suspension architecture come from the manufacturer; independent measurements of ride quality, suspension performance or handling were not available.
Cable-operated drum brakes and a century-scale design philosophy
The Magnolia 4 uses cable-operated drum brakes housed in aluminum wheels designed with heat dissipation in mind. On a modern motorcycle, that is a striking choice. Disc brakes and electronic controls dominate current performance and premium touring motorcycles, while the Magnolia favors a mechanically simple system that can be serviced without extensive electronic dependence.
Bienville’s larger ambition is what it calls a “century” concept: a motorcycle designed to remain understandable, repairable and recommissionable over an unusually long time horizon. The philosophy includes minimizing electronic vulnerabilities, using universal or accessible components where possible, simplifying recovery after long storage and favoring repair over wholesale replacement.
That is best understood as a design goal, not a guaranteed 100-year service-life claim. No independent evidence proves that a production Magnolia 4 will run for a century or that every replacement component will remain available for that long. The more defensible claim is that Bienville is designing for long-term mechanical stewardship rather than short product cycles.

Why the Magnolia 4 matters
The Magnolia 4’s significance is not based on a published quarter-mile time or a record-setting horsepower figure. Its importance is conceptual. It takes a nearly forgotten American engine configuration and treats it as a complete design language.
The long inline-four dictates the motorcycle’s silhouette. The tank-mounted shifter, kick-starting and drum brakes create an analog rider interface. The hydro-pneumatic suspension, CNC-machined aluminum engine and structural packaging keep the concept from becoming a simple nostalgia exercise. Even the limited production run supports the idea of a mechanical object intended to be maintained, understood and passed on.
In that sense, the Magnolia 4 is less a revival of an old motorcycle than a carefully imagined continuation of one. It asks what American motorcycling might have become if the inline-four had not disappeared—and answers with a rare, expensive and technically eccentric machine that looks backward without being built backward.
