Peugeot says it plans to bring the technology to a production vehicle from 2027, but that remains the company’s forecast—not a confirmed model launch or independently verified production specification.
What is Peugeot Hypersquare?
Hypersquare is the steering control at the centre of Peugeot’s proposed next-generation i-Cockpit. Its unusual rectangular shape is the visible change; the more fundamental one is steer-by-wire. In the Polygon Concept, there is no mechanical connection between the control and the front wheels: electronic systems transmit the driver’s steering input.
That distinction matters. A differently shaped wheel by itself would not change how steering works. Hypersquare combines a new control layout with an electronic steering system intended to vary the relationship between the driver’s input and the car’s response.
How does the steer-by-wire system work?
Steering ratio changes with speed
Peugeot says the system varies its steering ratio according to vehicle speed. At low speeds, it is designed to require less movement from the driver for manoeuvres; at higher speeds, Peugeot says small inputs can adjust the car’s trajectory. The company describes these as characteristics of the Polygon Concept, not independently measured results for a production car.

For the Polygon Concept, Peugeot specifies a maximum rotation of 170 degrees in either direction. The company contrasts that with three full turns of a traditional steering wheel. Both figures are Peugeot’s concept specifications and comparison, not independent test measurements or confirmed production values.
Electronic feedback for the driver
With no mechanical steering connection, the system must also provide feedback to the driver electronically. Peugeot says it recreates steering sensations, filtering unwanted vibration while retaining road information. The company has not established through the cited disclosures how that feedback will feel in a production vehicle.

What has Peugeot demonstrated so far?
In a July 2026 account, Peugeot described driving the Polygon Concept and a unique prototype mule based on a Peugeot 2008. The company reported low-speed driving at 20–30 km/h and dynamic driving at 90 km/h. These demonstrations show that Peugeot has driven prototypes; they do not establish final production hardware, independently measured performance, or how the system will behave in every driving condition.
When could Hypersquare reach production?
Peugeot’s latest stated forecast is to introduce steer-by-wire on a production vehicle from 2027. Its timeline has changed: 2023 Inception Concept material anticipated production vehicles with Hypersquare from 2025, while the Polygon announcement in November 2025 and Peugeot’s July 2026 account put the plan around 2027.

The company has not confirmed in these announcements which model, trim, price, or delivery date will be first. Treat 2027 as Peugeot’s current plan, not a guaranteed showroom date.
What is known—and not known—about safety?
Peugeot says the system has two independent actuators, with one taking over if the other fails. Julie Coubronne, Peugeot’s Steer-by-Wire DVP Manager, described this as the company’s design: “We have two independent actuators. Even if one fails, the other takes over.” That is a translated manufacturer statement, not independent evidence that the whole steering system is redundant or proof of production safety performance.

Road-going steering equipment is subject to regulatory requirements. The European Union’s published version of UN Regulation No. 79 covers approval of vehicles with regard to steering equipment, including provisions concerning electronic control systems. The cited material does not establish the specific approval route or approval status for a future Peugeot equipped with Hypersquare.
Peugeot also cites aerospace experience as part of its design rationale. That context, like the actuator description and electronic feedback claims, is not a substitute for independent evidence about failure handling, whole-system redundancy, regulatory approval, or production safety.

Is Hypersquare the future of driving?
Hypersquare is a credible direction for changing how drivers interact with steering: it pairs a compact, unconventional control with an electronic system that can alter steering ratio by speed. Peugeot has demonstrated prototypes and says production introduction is planned from 2027. Whether it becomes a convincing alternative to a conventional wheel will depend on the production system’s control feel, failure response, regulatory approval, and availability—details that Peugeot has not yet established in the cited announcements.
For now, it is best understood as a promising Peugeot concept and a manufacturer-stated production plan, rather than a proven replacement for conventional steering.
