No reliable public figure for Peter Sauber’s personal net worth is established by the available official sources. They document his motorsport career and changes in Sauber team ownership, but do not disclose his personal assets, liabilities, sale proceeds or other income. A team’s value or ownership history cannot be used to calculate his fortune.
Is Peter Sauber’s net worth known?
The Formula 1 and BMW sources cited here do not publish a verified net-worth estimate or a personal balance sheet for Sauber. That means an exact figure cannot responsibly be stated from this evidence. Online estimates without a named, reliable source and a clear method should be treated as unverified, not as established fact.

Personal net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. It is not interchangeable with the value of a racing team or the proceeds from a corporate transaction. The sources do not provide enough information to calculate Sauber’s personal wealth.
How did Peter Sauber build his motorsport career?
Formula 1 describes Sauber as a trained electrician and former car salesman who turned to motorsport rather than joining the family traffic-light business. He developed a Swiss racing operation that began in a family cellar. The Sauber C1 won the 1970 Swiss Sportscar Championship, and the Mercedes-powered C8 won the Nürburgring 1000 km race in 1986. The team entered Formula 1 in 1993. Formula 1’s account of Sauber’s origins provides this career history, not a measure of his personal wealth.

The team later finished fourth in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship in 2001. In 2020, Formula 1 marked the team’s approaching 500th Grand Prix. Both are team milestones; neither establishes Sauber’s personal net worth. Formula 1’s retrospective on the team recounts its history and ownership changes.
What happened to Sauber team ownership?
| Period or event | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2006–2009 | Formula 1 describes BMW as holding a majority stake in the team during this period. | Sauber’s personal share value or income from the arrangement. |
| November 2009 | BMW announced an agreement with Peter Sauber to sell the BMW Sauber F1 Team, conditional on securing a starting place for the 2010 season. | The transaction price or Sauber’s personal proceeds. BMW’s announcement gives no price. |
| 2010 | Formula 1 reports that Sauber took back control after the proposed Qadbak deal fell through and the team’s survival was at risk. | The financial terms of the buyback. |
| 2016 | Longbow Finance acquired the holding company; Formula 1 reports that Peter Sauber and Monisha Kaltenborn relinquished all shares. | The sale price or Sauber’s proceeds. Formula 1’s ownership announcement does not disclose them. |
| March 2024 | Formula 1 reported Audi’s announced 100% takeover of Sauber ahead of its planned 2026 entry. | Any continuing personal stake or wealth attributable to Peter Sauber. The Audi announcement concerns corporate ownership. |
Does the team’s sale reveal how much Peter Sauber received?
No. BMW’s November 2009 release describes a conditional agreement and quotes Sauber saying he was relieved the solution could preserve the Hinwil location and most jobs, but it provides no price. The 2016 Longbow announcement likewise does not state a sale price or his individual proceeds. Without those terms—and without information about other assets and liabilities—neither transaction can establish his net worth.
Formula 1’s 2020 retrospective quotes Sauber describing the 2010 buyback as “the only way to save the team from shutting down” and saying it was not planned. That explains the circumstances of his return to control; it is not evidence of the amount invested or its personal financial effect.

The documented dates and stakes describe the team’s history, not Peter Sauber’s personal finances. No substantiated personal net-worth estimate is provided by these official sources, and no team milestone, corporate stake or later takeover can substitute for one.
