Two southbound crashes disrupted peak-hour traffic on Perth’s Orrong Road and Roe Highway on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. The Roe Highway crash was reported first, at Willeri Drive; a later crash at Alexander Drive affected Orrong Road. Both incidents were cleared, though traffic remained slow on the approach to the Orrong Road crash site. This is a report of a past event, not a live traffic update.
What happened on June 24
PerthNow reported the incidents on June 24, attributing the reported times to Main Roads WA. The crashes affected separate routes; the report does not establish that one caused the other.
Roe Highway southbound at Willeri Drive
At 3:47pm, Main Roads reported a crash at Willeri Drive in Canning Vale. The crash reduced Roe Highway southbound to one lane. It was later cleared. PerthNow’s incident report describes the event.
Tonkin Highway exit breakdown
At 4:06pm, a breakdown blocked the left lane of the Tonkin Highway northbound exit to Dunreath Drive in Redcliffe, causing heavy traffic. The breakdown was later cleared. This was a separate incident from the two crashes. PerthNow’s report included it in its account of that afternoon’s wider traffic conditions.

Orrong Road southbound at Alexander Drive
At 5:03pm, Main Roads reported a crash at Alexander Drive in Welshpool. It blocked a southbound lane during the homeward peak. The crash was later cleared, but traffic remained slow on the approach. PerthNow reported the incident.
What “gridlock” means in this report
The reported facts establish lane restrictions, heavy traffic at the Tonkin Highway exit, and slow traffic approaching the Orrong Road crash site. They do not give a measured gridlock duration, queue length, or the number of people delayed. No crash cause, injury details, or vehicle counts were reported, so the available account does not support more specific claims about the incidents.

Main Roads WA describes Orrong Road as a route serving local and regional traffic. It links surrounding communities and businesses with Perth Airport, the south-eastern suburbs, the Perth Hills, and the Welshpool and Kewdale freight and industrial areas.
- Main Roads says around 65,000 vehicles, or 85,000 people, travel daily along Orrong Road between Great Eastern Highway and Leach Highway.
- Main Roads’ Orrong Connect FAQ estimates congestion along Orrong Road and the Graham Farmer Freeway costs up to $65.7 million every year in lost productivity.
- Main Roads reports more than 40 crashes leading to serious injury on this section of Orrong Road between 2018 and 2022.
These are corridor-wide figures published in Main Roads WA’s Orrong Connect material, accessed October 8, 2026. They are not measurements of the June 24 incidents or their effects. The project page says its planning and development phase has concluded and its findings will help inform a future business case; it does not say construction is underway.
