What the Perth price warning said
In an alert published on 29 September 2026, WA Consumer Protection said Perth’s average regular unleaded petrol (ULP) price was expected to rise by 12 cents per litre (cpl), reaching 238.5 cpl from 6am the next day. These were the agency’s forecast figures for that date, not current prices. Read the WA Consumer Protection alert.
The alert said prices at some stations could reach 251.9 cpl at Caltex; 249.9 cpl at Ampol, EG Ampol, 7-Eleven and BP; and 239.9 cpl at Shell Reddy Express. It also reported that 24 sites would offer ULP below 222 cpl on 30 September, illustrating that a Perth average does not describe every station’s price.
Cheaper prices in the dated examples
WA Consumer Protection listed these cheapest ULP prices by area. They are historical examples from 29 and 30 September 2026, not recommendations for where to buy today.

What happened to prices on 30 September
The ACCC’s weekly report, published 2 October 2026, recorded Perth’s daily average retail petrol price at 226.3 cpl on Tuesday, 29 September, and 238.7 cpl on Wednesday, 30 September—a rise of 12.4 cpl. It also reported 24 retail sites offering ULP below 222 cpl on Wednesday. Read the ACCC’s report.
The ACCC’s observed daily average of 238.7 cpl and WA Consumer Protection’s forecast average of 238.5 cpl are different figures from different sources. The ACCC also recorded a terminal gate price of 228.7 cpl on 30 September. That is an indicative wholesale spot-market measure, not the retail price at the bowser; it excludes transport costs, and actual wholesale transactions can vary.

When Perth petrol prices usually change
FuelWatch describes a seven-day price cycle in metropolitan Perth and Mandurah for unleaded petrol. The cycle currently begins with a sharp increase on Wednesday, followed by decreases over the next six days; the final day is often the cheapest, and prices may be at or below wholesale levels. Timing can change, so check FuelWatch rather than assuming a particular day will always be cheapest.
This cycle does not apply to diesel or LPG. Regional WA prices are generally more stable and do not follow the same pattern. The cycle is only one influence on prices: it should not be treated as a complete explanation for every change at a station.

How to find the cheapest petrol near you
- Choose your fuel type. Compare the fuel your vehicle actually needs; Perth’s weekly cycle applies to ULP, not diesel or LPG.
- Search your area on FuelWatch. Use a suburb or postcode, allow location access to find nearby prices, or compare stations on the map.
- Check the price for the day you plan to buy. Retailers notify next-day prices by 2pm, and those prices are made public from 2:30pm. The notified price is locked for 24 hours from 6am the following day.
- Allow for discounts and fees. FuelWatch lists standard cash prices; it does not include discounts such as supermarket offers or additional charges such as credit-card fees. Check whether these apply to you.
- Compare the saving with the detour. A cheaper price may not be worthwhile if extra distance or time outweighs the per-litre saving.

Why fuel prices move
Australian governments do not set or control fuel prices, according to WA Consumer Protection. Prices are affected by international refined-fuel benchmarks, the Australian dollar’s value against the US dollar, local competition, and decisions made by wholesalers and retailers.

The ACCC reported that retail and indicative wholesale petrol prices broadly reflected movements in refined-fuel benchmarks over the period through 30 September 2026. Terminal gate prices are spot-market wholesale prices that are typically indicative of average wholesale prices, but transactions can differ and transport costs are excluded. Retail prices therefore reflect more than the Perth weekly cycle alone.

WA Consumer Protection advised motorists to buy only enough fuel to fill their vehicles, not to stockpile. Its 30 September figures described a dated price change, and the alert’s station examples are not live offers. For a current decision, compare the right fuel type and intended day on FuelWatch before setting out.
