What FuelWatch says about Perth’s petrol price cycle
FuelWatch describes a current weekly cycle for ULP in Perth and Mandurah: prices rise sharply on Wednesday and then decline over the next six days. The cycle description applies to unleaded petrol, not diesel or LPG. Regional WA generally does not follow the same cycle. FuelWatch and fuel prices
That guidance is not a promise that every station will be cheaper on Tuesday than Wednesday. The price you can buy at depends on the station and date, so a weekday rule is no substitute for checking the actual listing.
Older advice can be misleading if presented as current. A WA Consumer Protection blog from around 2019 described Monday as generally the cheapest day and Tuesday as the most expensive in the Perth cycle. Does switching from Tuesday to Wednesday save $1,000?
The official examples support possible savings of dollars per fill, not a universal $1,000 annual saving from choosing Tuesday instead of Wednesday. FuelWatch says motorists could save up to 30 cents per litre on a given day, equivalent to $18 on a 60-litre tank. That is an illustrative maximum, not a guaranteed saving or a Tuesday-versus-Wednesday comparison. How FuelWatch works
A WA Consumer Protection announcement published on 6 October 2026 gave a separate dated example: Perth’s average ULP price was set to rise by 14.2 cents per litre from 6am on Wednesday 7 October to 244.3 cents per litre. It also said a 43-cent-per-litre difference between the cheapest and most expensive sites could mean a potential $25 saving on a 60-litre tank. Saving in dollars = price difference in cents per litre × litres bought ÷ 100.

For example, a 10-cent-per-litre difference on a 60-litre fill would be $6, if both prices apply to the fuel and purchase being compared. To turn a per-fill difference into an annual figure, you would also need to state how many times you fill up and show that the same difference actually applied each time. The official examples above do not supply that evidence for a $1,000 yearly saving.
How to check tomorrow’s prices on FuelWatch
- Search your suburb or postcode, or use the location feature. FuelWatch lists prices for WA fuel retailers and lets you compare nearby stations. FuelWatch and fuel prices
- Choose the fuel grade you need. Do not apply the ULP cycle description to diesel or LPG.
- Check both today’s and tomorrow’s listings. Retailers notify next-day prices by 2pm, and FuelWatch publishes them from 2:30pm.
- Confirm when the listed price applies. The notified price takes effect at 6am and is locked for 24 hours.
- Compare the final cost, not just the displayed cents per litre. FuelWatch shows standard cash prices; its listings exclude discounts and charges such as supermarket fuel discounts and credit-card fees. - Account for the drive to the station. A lower listed price farther away may not be worthwhile once you consider the extra distance. Compare the likely fuel saving with the cost and time of the detour.
What to include in a meaningful savings comparison
For a fair Tuesday-versus-Wednesday calculation, compare the same fuel grade and the actual prices available to you on the relevant dates. Record the per-litre difference, how many litres you plan to buy, any discount or payment fee, and whether one station requires a detour.
