The Pagani Utopia is a limited-production V12 supercar built around a choice that is increasingly rare: a seven-speed manual or a seven-speed automated manual. Pagani’s published coupe specification lists 864 hp, 1,100 Nm of torque and a 1,280 kg dry weight. Reviewers praise its engine, cornering and road compliance, while noting that the automated gearbox can feel clunky and its immense torque demands care on slick surfaces.
Pagani Utopia review: what stands out
The Utopia brings together a bespoke Mercedes-AMG-developed V12, a lightweight composite structure and carefully machined controls. Its character is deliberately mechanical: the coupe can be ordered with a pure manual gearbox, while the automated-manual option retains a conventional transmission layout rather than using a dual-clutch unit. Pagani’s 2022 technical release describes the engine and factory specifications (Pagani Automobili).
Car and Driver rates the Utopia 9.5/10, praising its engine and cornering. Its review also identifies drawbacks: the automated seven-speed can be clunky, and getting away quickly takes disciplined use of the accelerator and clutch. Top Gear reviewer Ollie Marriage emphasizes the design and manual gearbox as central to the car’s appeal. These are the publications’ assessments, not a guarantee of how every driver will experience the car.
Manual or automated manual?
The manual is the direct choice for drivers who want to manage each shift themselves and lean into the Utopia’s analog character. The Xtrac automated manual offers automated shifting; based on the available review commentary, it may suit someone who wants the car’s performance without making every gear change manually, though Car and Driver notes that its operation can feel clunky. Pagani lists both transmissions as coupe options.

Road composure and traction
Top Gear’s 2024 drive describes compliant suspension, but also reports wheelspin on wet, bumpy, narrow roads, where the conditions and wide rear tires contributed. That account illustrates the trade-off: the car can feel composed over imperfect surfaces, yet its substantial torque and rear tires still call for care when grip is limited. It is an observation from that publication’s drive, not a claim that wheelspin is inevitable.

The Roadster is a related body style, not a basis for changing the coupe’s specifications or production count. Pagani’s 2024 Roadster release also states 864 horsepower (635 kW) and says each engine is assembled by one craftsman; those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements. The release’s assembly statement is: “Each engine is entirely assembled by a single craftsman, a true mechanical artist.” See Pagani’s Roadster release for that model’s context.
