P0014 means the engine computer has detected that the Bank 1 “B” camshaft timing is over-advanced or outside its expected performance range. It is a system fault, not proof that one specific sensor, solenoid, or camshaft has failed. Check the oil and warning lights first, then use the diagnostic procedure for your exact vehicle, engine, and model year before replacing parts.
What P0014 means
P0014 is a generic powertrain diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for “B” camshaft position timing over-advanced or system performance, Bank 1. Bank 1 is the side of the engine containing cylinder 1. “B” generally identifies the second camshaft position monitored on that bank, often the exhaust camshaft on engines with separate intake and exhaust camshafts. Manufacturer wording and monitoring logic can differ.

The engine control module compares crankshaft and camshaft position signals with the commanded cam-timing position. If the measured timing is more advanced than expected, or does not track the target within the manufacturer’s allowed range, it stores P0014 and usually turns on the check-engine light.

How variable valve timing is involved
In the Mitsubishi procedure documented for this code, the ECM controls an exhaust engine oil-control valve to change exhaust-cam phase. It calculates that phase from crankshaft-angle and exhaust-camshaft-position sensor signals, then compares actual exhaust valve timing with the target. Other manufacturers use different hardware and terminology, but the underlying issue is the same: commanded and measured cam timing do not agree.

Symptoms you may notice
- Rough running or an unstable idle
- Hard starting
- Stalling
- Reduced performance or fuel economy
- A check-engine light, sometimes with other timing or sensor codes
Symptoms vary by vehicle and by the underlying fault. A stored P0014 does not guarantee that every listed symptom will occur.
Is P0014 safe to drive?
P0014 alone does not establish a universal safe-driving period. If the engine is running very roughly, stalls, loses power, or the oil-pressure warning is illuminated, stop driving when safe and arrange prompt diagnosis. If the engine seems normal and no oil-pressure warning is present, follow the vehicle owner’s guidance and have the fault checked soon rather than continuing to replace parts by guesswork.

The possible causes depend on the engine. Service procedures for Mitsubishi and Nissan examples include the following:

| Camshaft or crankshaft position sensor fault | Incorrect or missing position information can make actual timing appear wrong. |
| Debris at a signal pickup or sensing ring | Contamination can distort the cam-position signal. |
| Timing-chain installation or mechanical timing error | A chain installed incorrectly, stretched, or jumped can put cam timing out of relationship with the crankshaft. |
| Failed timing sprocket or cam-phasing mechanism | A mechanically damaged phaser may remain advanced or fail to follow commands. |
| Blocked oil passage or exhaust timing oil groove | Restricted oil flow prevents the phaser from reaching the commanded position. |
| ECM fault | This is considered only after the applicable oil, wiring, sensor, valve, and mechanical checks pass. |
How to diagnose P0014
Use the vehicle’s factory service information or a reputable repair manual for the exact year, make, model, engine, and emissions configuration. The code description is generic; the tests, connector pinouts, data labels, and pass/fail values are not.

- Record the complete scan. Save P0014, all other stored or pending codes, freeze-frame data, mileage, and the conditions present when the code set.
- Check oil level and the oil-pressure warning. Park safely, verify the level using the owner’s procedure, and look for obvious leaks. If the oil-pressure warning is on, do not continue normal driving; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for immediate inspection.
- Look for related codes and symptoms. Cam, crank, VVT, oil-pressure, and circuit codes can change the diagnostic order. Note hard starting, rough idle, stalling, or noise.
- Inspect the connectors and harness. Check the relevant cam and crank sensors and the exhaust oil-control valve for loose locks, corrosion, oil intrusion, rubbed insulation, broken wires, and poor terminal tension. Use the service-manual electrical tests rather than relying on visual inspection alone.
- Check scan-tool data. A compatible tool may display commanded and actual cam phase, VVT duty cycle, sensor synchronization, and related parameters. Confirm that the values respond as the service procedure specifies. A basic code reader can retrieve P0014 but cannot identify the failed part.
- Test the oil-control valve and sensors. Follow the manufacturer’s resistance, power, ground, actuation, and signal tests. Do not apply battery power or back-probe a connector unless the procedure permits it.
- Inspect mechanical timing and oil flow when directed. Depending on the engine, this can include checking the timing chain or belt alignment, cam signal plate or sensing ring, phaser/sprocket operation, oil screens, passages, and the exhaust timing oil groove.
- Repair the verified cause and verify the repair. Clear codes only after the repair, then perform the specified drive cycle or scan-tool confirmation. The Mitsubishi procedure, for example, calls for an OBD-II drive-cycle check after repair; other vehicles may specify a different verification routine.
What the diagnostic threshold does—and does not—tell you
Thresholds are manufacturer- and procedure-specific. In the cited 2019 Mitsubishi service information, the monitor sets when actual and target exhaust valve-opening timing differ by more than 5 degrees for 5 seconds under stated operating conditions. That figure is not a universal P0014 limit and must not be applied to another make or engine.
Choosing the right diagnostic equipment

Why replacing a cam sensor first can waste money
P0014 can result from oil flow, a VVT valve, wiring, a signal pickup, timing hardware, or the ECM as well as a sensor. Replacing a sensor or solenoid solely because the code mentions cam timing can leave the real fault untouched. Diagnose the circuit, oil supply, commanded-versus-actual timing, and mechanical condition in the sequence specified for your engine.

When professional diagnosis is the better choice
- The oil-pressure warning is illuminated or oil pressure is uncertain.
- The engine stalls, runs very roughly, or has severe starting problems.
- Timing-chain or cam-phaser inspection is required.
- You need manufacturer-specific live data, actuator tests, or wiring measurements.
- The code returns after a verified repair or appears with multiple synchronization codes.
A compatible live-data scan tool and the correct factory service information can make diagnosis more efficient, but neither replaces the vehicle-specific test procedure.
