Own a JuiceBox EV Charger? What Still Works, What Changed, and What to Do Now

A JuiceBox may still charge your EV even after Enel X Way’s North American shutdown, but app features and support are uncertain. Here is how to identify your model, test it safely, understand J1772 and NEMA 14-50 compatibility, respond to fault tones, and decide between repair and replacement.

Short answer: A JuiceBox may still deliver AC Level 2 power even though the Enel X Way North American business closed on October 11, 2024. The hardware and the cloud service are separate: your car may continue charging locally, while the app, remote controls, schedules, usage history, notifications, firmware updates, and customer support may be unavailable or only temporarily supported.

In November 2024, the transition site said that VoltiE Group Inc. had assumed operational responsibility for the North American charging network and would maintain software connectivity during an interim transition. That does not establish permanent app access, warranty coverage, parts availability, or support for every residential JuiceBox model. Before depending on the charger, identify the exact model, verify its electrical installation, test a local charging session, and treat any heat, arcing, damage, or repeated fault as a reason to stop and arrange an inspection.

What changed for JuiceBox owners in the United States and Canada?

Enel X Way USA announced that its North American electric-mobility business would close effective October 11, 2024. Its notice distinguished between the physical charging function of residential hardware and the software services attached to it. The hardware could retain the ability to charge, but app and software functionality would be available only for an interim period while a third party pursued a longer-term solution. The notice also said Enel X Way customer support would no longer be available. See the North American closure notice for the company’s wording and scope.

On November 27, 2024, the transition site stated that VoltiE Group Inc. had assumed operational responsibilities for the Enel X Way North America EV-charging network. The notice described an interim period of maintained software connectivity while migration to a new platform was being pursued. VoltiE should therefore be understood as the transition operator or network steward—not as the original JuiceBox manufacturer. The notice does not promise a permanent platform, a particular feature set, warranty fulfillment, replacement parts, or service for every model. The November 27 transition update is the appropriate reference for that announcement.

Function What to expect
Delivering AC power to a compatible vehicle May continue to work locally if the EVSE, vehicle, circuit, and installation are healthy.
Plugging in and starting a local session Test this at the unit and vehicle; behavior can vary by model, firmware, and stored settings.
App status, remote start, and remote stop Cloud-dependent and not something owners should assume will remain permanently available.
Charging schedules and time-of-use controls Software-dependent. A schedule may not be editable or may behave differently when cloud access is lost.
Energy history, notifications, and monitoring These depend on the account, app, dashboard, and backend service. Export or save information while access remains available if it matters to you.
Firmware updates and technical support Do not assume continued updates or a reliable route through the former Enel X Way support system.

This change affects North American service and software operations. Owners elsewhere should check the support and operating status applicable to their country rather than automatically applying the United States and Canada transition to their unit.

First identify your JuiceBox and its installation

Do not troubleshoot a JuiceBox from its name alone. The model, generation, firmware, connector, input connection, and installation method determine what it can do and how it should be serviced.

  1. Photograph the rating label. Capture the model, serial number, electrical ratings, and any date or revision information. Photograph the front, sides, connector, cable, plug, and mounting hardware as well.
  2. Classify the unit. Record whether it is a legacy or non-networked unit, a connected residential model, a 2020-release model, or a Pro model if the label or documentation identifies it that way. Do not assume that two units with similar enclosures use identical parts or firmware.
  3. Record the supply connection. Some JuiceBox units are plug-in models, commonly using a NEMA 14-50 connection. Others are hardwired or use a different configuration. The input connection is separate from the connector that plugs into the vehicle.
  4. Record the output rating and current setting. Residential documentation covers models such as JuiceBox 32, 40, and 48, but the number in the model name should not be treated as a universal electrical specification. The configured current limit must be appropriate for the actual circuit and the specific EVSE.
  5. Save the manual and error-code page offline. Apps, dashboards, and support websites can change during a business transition. Keep a local copy of the relevant JuiceBox documentation and the error-code reference for your model.

What one JuiceBox specification sheet tells you—and what it does not

An official JuiceBox 32 data sheet lists 110–240-volt single-phase input, up to 7.7 kW at 240 volts, a NEMA 14-50 plug or hardwire option, a 25-foot cable, an SAE J1772 connector, IP66 enclosure protection, integrated cable management, and an operating range of -40°F to 140°F. Those are useful reference points for that documented model, not specifications that can safely be applied to every JuiceBox generation.

The breaker, conductors, receptacle, grounding, installation method, and configured current limit must all match the particular unit and local electrical requirements. If you cannot identify the circuit rating or whether the installation is suitable for continuous EV charging, have a qualified electrician inspect it. Never raise an amperage setting merely because the vehicle or breaker appears capable of more.

The JuiceBox is an EVSE, not the car’s onboard charger

A JuiceBox is an electric-vehicle supply equipment device, or EVSE. It supplies AC power and communicates with the vehicle through the J1772 control system. The vehicle’s onboard AC charger ultimately determines how much AC power the battery can accept. As a result, a 32-, 40-, or 48-amp JuiceBox does not guarantee that the car will draw that much.

The maximum safe charging current is also limited by the electrical installation. The circuit, overcurrent protection, wire size, receptacle or hardwire method, EVSE setting, and local requirements must agree. On applicable connected models, the output-current limit could historically be adjusted through the app or dashboard. If cloud controls are unavailable, do not assume that a requested change was saved or applied. The physical rating label and verified installation—not an old app value—should control the decision.

What can still work without the app?

Local charging may still work, but there is no single offline behavior that can be promised for every JuiceBox. A unit may use a locally retained current setting, while the vehicle may also have its own charging schedule or delayed-start setting. Firmware version and model affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this practical test:

  1. Park the vehicle where you can remain present during the test.
  2. Set the vehicle to charge immediately rather than at a delayed time, if the vehicle offers that control.
  3. Inspect the connector and charge port before plugging in. Do not use damaged or wet equipment.
  4. Plug in and initiate the session locally. Watch the EVSE and the vehicle for the expected charging indication.
  5. Remain present for a short session and check for abnormal heat, smell, noise, repeated stops, breaker operation, or error tones.
  6. Do not rely on a remote app status or an old schedule until you have confirmed what the unit does in person.

If the unit passes power locally but the app cannot connect, that is primarily a connectivity or cloud-service problem. If the unit will not energize, repeatedly stops, trips a breaker, or shows a fault, investigate the vehicle, EVSE, and electrical installation separately. Loss of app access is not proof that the power hardware is defective, and a working app is not proof that a damaged plug or receptacle is safe.

Safety disclosure: NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24028 on October 3, 2024. The opening materials state that the Office of Defects Investigation had received six complaints involving JuiceBox residential Level 2 chargers. The complaints alleged electrical malfunctions, arcing, thermal events, and fires or potential fires. The evaluation also considered scope, frequency, safety consequences, and possible involvement of the app and supporting software. The NHTSA opening document is a preliminary investigation, not a finding that every JuiceBox is defective and not, by itself, a final recall determination.

That distinction matters, but it does not make warning signs something to ignore. Stop charging and de-energize the circuit if there is:

  • a burning or melted-plastic smell;
  • discoloration, melting, soot, or visible arcing;
  • abnormal heat at the plug, receptacle, cable, handle, or enclosure;
  • repeated breaker trips or ground-fault interruptions;
  • damaged cable insulation, a loose connector, bent or damaged pins, or a broken latch;
  • water intrusion or evidence of moisture inside a connector or enclosure; or
  • repeated start-stop behavior accompanied by heat, noise, or an error.

If equipment is hot, smoking, sparking, or visibly damaged, do not handle it unnecessarily. Turn off the dedicated circuit only if it can be done safely, keep people away, and arrange an inspection by a licensed EV charger electrician or another appropriately qualified professional. Do not bypass grounding, defeat a GFCI or other protective device, open the enclosure, splice the charging cable, or modify the circuit as a casual DIY repair.

JuiceBox error tones and the safest next step

The manufacturer’s troubleshooting material separates several conditions, including ground faults, GFI trips, overheating, stuck relays, and internal control faults. Tone patterns can be model- or firmware-dependent, so use the documentation for the exact unit. These are conservative first steps, not permission to keep operating a suspect charger.

Observed behavior Likely documented area What to do
No power or a constant tone Grounding, line or neutral connection, breaker, or outlet issue Check only what can be safely observed. Do not bypass a grounding problem. Have the circuit and EVSE inspected if the condition remains.
Repeating single beep or self-test failure Self-test or startup failure Follow the documented unplug and power-cycle procedure once. If it returns, stop repeated attempts and arrange service or replacement evaluation.
Three beeps or a GFI trip Ground-fault or leakage condition Unplug from the vehicle, then inspect the vehicle inlet, J1772 handle, cable, receptacle, and installation for damage or moisture. Do not defeat the protective device.
Four beeps Overheating Move the unit away from direct heat or sun where the installation permits and allow it to cool. Recurring overheating requires investigation rather than repeated resets.
Five or six beeps Relay or internal control fault Do not continue repeated charging attempts. A qualified EVSE repair specialist should assess whether repair is safe and practical.
Charging starts and stops repeatedly Moisture, cable or handle damage, vehicle charge-port trouble, or installation fault Stop if there is heat or damage. Otherwise isolate the cause with the vehicle, cable, EVSE, and circuit checked separately.

A power cycle can clear a transient fault; it cannot make a damaged plug, overheated receptacle, failed relay, or compromised cable safe. The official error-code guidance should take priority over a generic internet troubleshooting list.

J1772 compatibility, adapters, and the NEMA 14-50 distinction

North American residential documentation commonly identifies SAE J1772 output for JuiceBox 32, 40, and 48 models. A vehicle with a J1772 inlet can generally use that connector when the EVSE and installation are functioning correctly. A vehicle with a different inlet may require an adapter approved by the vehicle manufacturer and compatible with both the vehicle and the charging equipment.

A J1772 accessory does not turn a JuiceBox into a DC fast charger. The JuiceBox remains an AC Level 2 EVSE, and the vehicle’s onboard charger remains part of the charging path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connector going into the car is also not the same thing as the input connection supplying the JuiceBox. A NEMA 14-50 plug is one documented JuiceBox input configuration; other units may be hardwired or use another connection. Never select an adapter solely because it physically fits. Electrical compatibility includes grounding, overcurrent protection, conductor capacity, continuous-load requirements, weather suitability, and the JuiceBox’s configured current.

If a plug-in installation has a damaged or unsuitable receptacle, the correction may involve an EV-rated NEMA 14-50 receptacle, but the receptacle should be selected and installed by a qualified electrician for the actual EVSE and circuit. Do not substitute a household receptacle based only on appearance or amperage printed on the face.

Inspect the cable, handle, holster, and receptacle

Before every troubleshooting decision, inspect the parts you can see without opening the enclosure:

  • the entire cable jacket for cuts, crushing, cracking, or exposed conductors;
  • the J1772 handle for a loose body, damaged latch, bent pins, contamination, or heat discoloration;
  • the vehicle charge port for moisture, debris, melting, or damaged contacts;
  • the input plug and receptacle for looseness, scorching, discoloration, or heat;
  • the enclosure and mounting bracket for cracks, water intrusion, or impact damage; and
  • the cable holder or holster, so the handle is not left hanging from the cable or resting where it can be stepped on.

If the original holster is missing or broken, a J1772 EV charger holder with a cable hook can be a sensible storage accessory. Verify the connector shape, mounting hardware, load support, and indoor/outdoor rating before buying. It organizes the cable; it does not repair an EVSE, improve its electrical rating, or make a damaged connector safe.

Repair, warranty, or replacement?

Older official warranty material lists three-year coverage for several residential and Pro models, subject to model-specific exclusions and conditions. Because Enel X Way USA ceased North American operations, do not treat an old warranty PDF or former support phone number as a dependable current service route. Check the current transition information for where closure-related claims and product or roadmap questions are directed, but do not assume that a claim will be accepted or that parts and labor remain available.

Use this decision sequence for a failed JuiceBox:

  1. Rule out the vehicle. If possible, test the vehicle on another known-good compatible AC charger, or have the vehicle’s charge port checked.
  2. Rule out the supply. Check the breaker’s status and have the receptacle, wiring, grounding, and circuit capacity inspected when there is any uncertainty. A hardwired installation should be handled by a qualified professional.
  3. Identify the exact EVSE. Record the model, serial number, input method, current rating, error tone, and the circumstances in which the failure occurs.
  4. Separate cable damage from internal failure. A damaged cable or J1772 handle may look like a straightforward replacement, but a J1772 replacement cable is not a universal plug-and-play part for every JuiceBox. It should be considered only after exact-model verification and by a qualified repair provider.
  5. Compare repair uncertainty with replacement. For relay faults, internal-control faults, recurring overheating, water damage, or unavailable support, compare the cost of diagnosis and model-specific parts with a currently supported replacement EVSE.

Do not open the enclosure, install a generic relay or circuit board, splice a cable, or assume that a replacement cable fits because its J1772 handle looks the same. The manufacturer’s documentation warns against destructive enclosure modification and directs hardwiring and related electrical work to qualified professionals.

If the problem involves breaker trips, suspected wiring faults, abnormal heat, a hardwired unit, or a replacement circuit, use a licensed EV charger electrician. If the electrical supply is sound but the EVSE has an internal fault or a damaged cable, an EVSE repair specialist can determine whether model-specific repair is safe and economically sensible. If no supported repair path exists, replacement may be the more predictable choice.

Keep, service, or replace: a practical decision guide

Situation Reasonable next step
Local charging works, the circuit is verified, and there are no heat or damage symptoms Continue using it cautiously. Test locally and do not depend on cloud features for an essential charging schedule.
Charging works but the app, history, or notifications do not Treat it as a cloud-service limitation. Save any records you can and plan around local or vehicle-side charging controls.
The outlet is loose, hot, discolored, or repeatedly trips Stop using the charger and have the circuit and receptacle inspected before reuse.
The unit shows recurring GFI, overheating, relay, or internal-control faults Stop repeated resets and obtain qualified diagnosis. Repair only if the model-specific path is safe and supported.
The charger is hardwired and its rating or circuit is uncertain Do not alter settings or wiring yourself. Have an electrician verify the installation.
You depend on remote schedules, firmware support, or a permanent service promise Compare the uncertainty of the transition with a currently supported replacement EVSE.

Do this on the first day you take ownership

  1. Photograph the rating label, model, serial number, connector, input plug, and breaker.
  2. Determine whether the unit is legacy, non-networked, connected, a 2020-release model, or a Pro model.
  3. Record whether it is NEMA 14-50 plug-in, another plug configuration, or hardwired.
  4. Confirm that the breaker, conductors, receptacle, and configured current limit match the model and local electrical requirements. Use a qualified electrician if anything is unclear.
  5. Inspect the enclosure, cable jacket, J1772 handle, pins, latch, mounting bracket, and receptacle for damage or heat.
  6. Run a short local charging session while physically present.
  7. Do not rely on an app schedule until local charging behavior has been verified.
  8. Save the relevant manual and error-code page offline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a JuiceBox still charge if the app no longer works?

Possibly. The physical EVSE may continue delivering AC power locally, but offline behavior varies by model, firmware, stored settings, and the vehicle. Test an immediate local charging session while present rather than relying on remote status or a previously configured schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was every JuiceBox charger recalled?

The available research does not support that claim. NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24028 after receiving six complaints involving JuiceBox residential Level 2 chargers. That is an investigation into scope and safety issues, not a final determination that every JuiceBox is defective or a blanket recall finding.

Can I use a JuiceBox with a vehicle that does not have a J1772 inlet?

The documented North American residential models commonly use SAE J1772. A vehicle with another inlet may need a vehicle-maker-approved, compatible adapter. Confirm compatibility before use, and remember that an adapter does not convert the AC Level 2 JuiceBox into a DC fast charger.

Can I replace a JuiceBox cable myself?

Do not assume so. A replacement J1772 cable is not universal across JuiceBox models, and enclosure work or cable replacement can create shock, fire, grounding, and certification risks. Have the exact model evaluated by a qualified EVSE repair provider.

Is VoltiE the company that originally made JuiceBox?

No. The transition notice describes VoltiE Group Inc. as assuming operational responsibility for the North American EV-charging network during an interim transition. It does not identify VoltiE as the original manufacturer or guarantee permanent support for every JuiceBox product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat a JuiceBox as two things: a physical EVSE that may still charge your car, and a cloud-connected product whose North American software and support arrangements changed after October 11, 2024. Verify the model and circuit, test charging locally, save the documentation, and stop immediately for heat, arcing, damage, repeated trips, or persistent fault tones. If the hardware fails, use qualified diagnosis and compare the uncertain repair path with a currently supported replacement.
