2025 Toyota 4Runner: Every Grade Explained—and Which One We’d Pick

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner’s nine U.S. grades serve very different buyers. Here is what each trim adds, which powertrain and drivetrain make sense, and why the TRD Off-Road Premium is our overall pick.

For most buyers, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium is the grade to buy. It keeps the hardware that makes the sixth-generation 4Runner genuinely useful on trails—18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and an electronically locking rear differential—then adds the comfort and technology needed for daily driving, including SofTex seats, a 14-inch touchscreen, JBL audio, a heated steering wheel, Multi-Terrain Monitor, and a hands-free power liftgate.

The gas-powered TRD Off-Road Premium is the value choice. Add the available i-FORCE MAX hybrid if you need its 326 horsepower, 465 lb.-ft. of torque, standard four-wheel drive, 2,400-watt AC power supply, or up-to-6,000-pound towing capability. The rest of the lineup is easier to understand when grouped by purpose: value, road-biased sport, traditional trail capability, luxury, and factory-built extreme or overlanding equipment.

Powertrains and drivetrain choices

i-FORCE: the sensible gas engine

Every 2025 4Runner uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder i-FORCE engine when equipped with the standard powertrain. It produces up to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque and works with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This is the powertrain to choose when purchase price, simplicity, and ordinary commuting matter more than maximum torque or the hybrid system’s additional equipment. It is also the more logical choice for buyers who will take occasional camping trips but do not expect to tow near the 4Runner’s maximum or run high electrical loads away from home.

i-FORCE MAX: more torque and more standard equipment

The available i-FORCE MAX combines the turbocharged engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery. Total output rises to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. It uses the same eight-speed automatic transmission but is four-wheel-drive only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hybrid powertrain is standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. Toyota also makes it available on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited. It is not the standard powertrain on SR5, TRD Sport, or TRD Sport Premium; those grades are primarily gas-engine choices in the 2025 lineup.

Beyond power, i-FORCE MAX brings reasons to consider it for camping and towing. Toyota cites a 2,400-watt AC power supply and up-to-6,000-pound towing capability. Choose it when you need the extra torque, want four-wheel drive as part of the hybrid package, regularly tow a heavier trailer, or specifically want Platinum, TRD Pro, or Trailhunter.

Rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, and full-time four-wheel drive

The 2025 4Runner does not use one universal drivetrain configuration. Depending on grade and powertrain, buyers can choose rear-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive, or full-time four-wheel drive.

  • SR5: available with rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive.
  • i-FORCE MAX: four-wheel drive only.
  • Limited and Platinum: Toyota identifies the relevant configurations with full-time four-wheel drive and an electronically locking center differential when so equipped or specified by grade.
  • TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter: these are the trail-focused four-wheel-drive choices, with equipment and controls intended for loose or uneven terrain.

Exact drivetrain availability can depend on the grade, engine, and build configuration. Check the vehicle’s window sticker or Toyota build sheet rather than assuming that every 4Runner with the same trim badge has the same system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fuel economy is configuration-dependent

Toyota lists an EPA-estimated maximum of 26 mpg highway for i-FORCE configurations and up to 24 mpg highway for i-FORCE MAX configurations. Those are not universal ratings for every 4Runner. Wheel size, tires, drivetrain, grade, and other equipment affect the final EPA figure.

Every 2025 4Runner grade explained

SR5: the value and general-purpose 4Runner

The SR5 is the entry point to the sixth-generation 4Runner and the least expensive way to get the new platform. It is available with rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive. Standard equipment includes LED headlights and fog lights, a power rear liftgate window, Smart Key, an 8-inch multimedia display, and a 7-inch color multi-information display.

That makes the SR5 a rational choice for someone who wants a rugged, family-sized SUV with basic equipment and occasional access to four-wheel drive. It avoids paying for premium seating, larger displays, specialized shocks, and trail-monitoring systems that may never be used.

The compromise is important: the SR5 does not have the TRD Off-Road’s all-terrain tires, specialized suspension, terrain-management systems, or locking rear differential. You can add some capability later, but recreating the complete factory package may cost more than stepping up to the appropriate grade from the beginning.

  • CAR PASS EXCELLENT SERVICE . Our brand is CAR PASS and we offer high quality car seat covers. We put product quality and your trust first. We do our best to provide you with quality service.

Our verdict: Buy the SR5 for value and straightforward daily use. Do not choose it as the starting point for regular technical trail driving unless you understand what the higher grades add.

TRD Sport: the pavement-first choice

TRD Sport is a styling and road-use grade, not a cheaper version of the TRD Off-Road. It adds a sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, a gloss-black hood scoop, automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a Qi wireless charger.

The larger wheels and road-oriented tires suit paved roads and give the 4Runner a more assertive appearance. They are less naturally suited to sharp rocks, deep ruts, and rough trail surfaces than the smaller wheels and all-terrain tires used by the TRD Off-Road family.

Our verdict: Choose TRD Sport because you like its street-oriented styling and suspension tuning. The “TRD” badge does not make it equivalent to a trail-focused TRD Off-Road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TRD Sport Premium: more comfort without changing the mission

TRD Sport Premium builds on TRD Sport with SofTex-trimmed power seats, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, JBL premium audio, a JBL FLEX portable speaker, Panoramic View Monitor, a hands-free power liftgate, a TRD shift knob, and a heated steering wheel.

Those additions make it a much better long-distance daily driver than the standard Sport if the price difference fits the budget. The larger display, upgraded audio, heated wheel, and power seats are features owners use every day.

But the underlying mission remains street-oriented. TRD Sport Premium does not replace the TRD Off-Road’s all-terrain tires, trail-focused shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, or available locking rear differential.

Our verdict: Pick it for a comfortable, sportier-looking commuter. If the primary reason for buying a 4Runner is trail capability, move to TRD Off-Road Premium instead.

TRD Off-Road: the capability-value sweet spot

The standard TRD Off-Road is where the 4Runner starts to justify its reputation as a trail vehicle. Toyota adds 18-inch wheels, 33-inch all-terrain tires as specified in its launch materials, underbody protection, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control. The grade can also be configured with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

Multi-Terrain Select provides adjustable modes for conditions such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. Crawl Control is a low-speed off-road aid that manages acceleration and braking so the driver can concentrate more on steering. These systems do not replace proper tire selection, line choice, recovery planning, or driver skill, but they are meaningful factory equipment rather than appearance upgrades.

The TRD Off-Road gives up some of the convenience and cabin polish found in the Premium grade. You will not get the same standard mix of SofTex seating, 14-inch screen, JBL audio, heated steering wheel, hands-free liftgate, and Multi-Terrain Monitor.

TRD Off-Road Premium: the one we would pick

TRD Off-Road Premium preserves the standard TRD Off-Road’s important trail equipment and adds the features that make the SUV easier to live with every day. Its additional equipment includes SofTex-trimmed power seats, a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen, JBL premium audio, a JBL FLEX portable speaker, Multi-Terrain Monitor, a hands-free power liftgate, a TRD shift knob, and a heated steering wheel.

This combination avoids the two most common buying mistakes in the 4Runner range. It does not spend heavily on street-oriented equipment when the buyer actually wants to explore trails, and it does not require the price or specialized mission of a TRD Pro or Trailhunter.

The gas model is the value choice. The available i-FORCE MAX is worth the premium for buyers who want its stronger torque output, standard four-wheel drive, 2,400-watt AC power supply, or higher towing capability. It is not automatically the better financial decision for someone who mainly commutes and camps a few times a year.

Our verdict: For one 4Runner to serve as a commuter, family SUV, road-trip vehicle, and serious weekend trail machine, choose the TRD Off-Road Premium. Select gas for value and i-FORCE MAX for power, towing, electrical capability, or standard hybrid four-wheel drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limited: the on-road luxury grade

Limited moves the 4Runner toward comfort and refinement. It includes heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats. Toyota also lists available equipment such as power-extending running boards, a 14-inch touchscreen, JBL premium audio with a JBL FLEX portable speaker, a digital rearview mirror, and a power moonroof.

Limited can be configured with i-FORCE MAX. Toyota identifies the relevant Limited configuration with full-time four-wheel drive and a center-locking differential. That gives it useful all-weather and light-off-road credentials, but it does not turn the Limited into a substitute for the TRD Off-Road’s trail tires, shocks, and dedicated off-road systems.

Our verdict: Choose Limited if your priorities are quiet comfort, premium seating, and family-road-trip duty. Do not buy it simply because it costs more if trail capability is the reason you want a 4Runner.

Platinum: the flagship luxury grade

Platinum is new for 2025 and comes standard with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. It adds premium leather-trimmed seats, heated second-row outboard seats, a standard Tow Technology Package, a Head-Up Display, automatic rain-sensing wipers, and distinctive black exterior styling elements.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platinum is the choice for buyers who want the most luxury-oriented cabin and standard hybrid power without the visual and suspension specialization of TRD Pro or Trailhunter. It is not the capability flagship: its price reflects comfort, technology, and standard powertrain equipment more than additional trail hardware.

Our verdict: Pick Platinum when luxury and hybrid power are more important than a factory-built trail package.

TRD Pro: the high-speed off-road specialist

TRD Pro is i-FORCE MAX-only. Its suspension is the main distinction: Toyota specifies TRD-tuned FOX QS3 adjustable internal-bypass shocks with rear remote reservoirs. The QS3 system allows manual compression-damping adjustment, a feature aimed at high-speed off-road driving rather than simply crawling over a rough access road.

The rest of the package includes a TRD performance air intake, 33-inch Toyo all-terrain tires, 18-inch black alloy wheels, a 20-inch LED light bar integrated into a heritage-inspired TOYOTA grille, RIGID Industries LED fog lamps, and TRD Pro-specific interior treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Our verdict: Choose TRD Pro when the FOX suspension, factory status, appearance, and high-speed off-road mission are specifically what you want. It is not automatically the best value for ordinary camping trails or commuting, and it is not necessarily the best factory starting point for overlanding.

Trailhunter: the factory overlanding build

Trailhunter is also i-FORCE MAX-only, but its equipment is aimed at overlanding rather than high-speed desert driving. Toyota specifies Old Man Emu forged monotube shocks with remote reservoirs, a low-profile high-mount air intake, 33-inch Toyo tires on bronze-finished 18-inch wheels, an onboard air compressor, RIGID Industries color-selectable LED fog lamps, and an ARB roof rack.

It also receives distinctive exterior treatment, including a bronze-colored heritage-inspired TOYOTA grille with an integrated LED light bar. The result is a more complete factory expedition starting point, with recognizable equipment from ARB, Old Man Emu, and RIGID Industries already integrated into the vehicle.

That equipment is valuable if you already know you want to travel far from paved roads and build around roof-mounted cargo, tire management, and remote-camping use. It can be excessive for an owner whose use consists of commuting, weekend camping, and maintained dirt roads. It may also duplicate equipment an experienced owner would prefer to select independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Our verdict: Buy Trailhunter when factory overlanding equipment is the point of the purchase. For a broader mix of daily driving and trail use, TRD Off-Road Premium remains the more balanced choice.

Which 2025 4Runner should you buy?

If your priority is… Start with… Why
Lowest entry price and basic utility SR5 It provides the new-generation platform with available four-wheel drive without paying for specialized equipment.
Street styling and mostly-paved driving TRD Sport Its sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch wheels, and appearance package fit pavement-first use.
Street use with more comfort TRD Sport Premium It adds SofTex seats, a larger screen, JBL audio, a heated wheel, and other daily-use upgrades.
Regular dirt roads, rocks, sand, snow, or camping approaches TRD Off-Road It adds the trail hardware that is difficult to replicate economically.
One vehicle for commuting and serious weekend trails TRD Off-Road Premium It combines the meaningful off-road equipment with the comfort features most owners use every day.
Premium road-trip comfort Limited Heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats and available luxury features take priority over trail specialization.
Luxury plus standard hybrid power Platinum It is the luxury flagship and includes i-FORCE MAX, a Head-Up Display, heated second-row seats, and a Tow Technology Package.
Factory FOX hardware and high-speed off-road use TRD Pro Its adjustable FOX suspension and 33-inch tires are the reason to pay more.
Factory overlanding equipment Trailhunter Its Old Man Emu suspension, ARB roof rack, onboard compressor, and expedition-focused equipment are already integrated.

2025 4Runner pricing: useful context, not a timeless price list

Toyota’s launch announcement listed a starting MSRP of $40,770, before a $1,450 Delivery Processing and Handling fee. A later Toyota-affiliated buying site listed the following base prices:

Grade Listed base price
SR5 $41,270
TRD Sport $47,750
TRD Sport Premium $53,110
TRD Off-Road $49,690
TRD Off-Road Premium $55,470
Limited $60,700
Platinum $63,360
TRD Pro $67,400
Trailhunter $67,400

These figures are price context from different points in the launch and listing cycle, not a guarantee of the price on a dealer’s lot today. Model-year pricing can change, and dealer listings can differ by region. Confirm whether the number you are comparing includes destination or delivery, options, accessories, dealer fees, taxes, registration, and any market adjustment.

The price gap also changes the trim decision. TRD Off-Road Premium costs more than the standard Off-Road because of comfort and technology, not because it replaces the trail hardware. TRD Pro and Trailhunter cost substantially more because of their specialized suspension, tires, exterior equipment, and standard i-FORCE MAX powertrain. If you do not need those features, the extra money is difficult to justify on equipment alone.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety maintains a 2025 4Runner rating page. Check the exact test coverage and result status before treating it as a complete safety score. NHTSA listed the 2025 4Runner among vehicles selected for its 5-Star Safety Ratings testing program, but selection for testing is not itself a crash-test result.

Every grade retains the 4Runner’s power rear window, one of the nameplate’s most useful practical features. For detailed operation, limits, towing guidance, and configuration-specific instructions, consult the 2025 4Runner owner’s manual through Toyota Owners rather than relying on a generic guide for an earlier generation.

First accessories worth considering

The most sensible accessory purchases are usually protection and carrying equipment, not an immediate suspension build. Toyota’s official accessory catalog lists all-weather cargo mats, all-weather floor liners, cross bars, the Toyota Roof Rack by ARB, Thule cargo and bike products, and other storage and towing/recovery accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the cargo area and cabin first

A 2025 4Runner cargo liner is a practical first purchase for muddy boots, pets, camping equipment, and spilled groceries. Toyota lists an all-weather cargo mat, but the key issue is exact fitment: the sixth-generation 2025 4Runner is not automatically compatible with accessories designed for 2010–2024 models.

For snow, mud, sand, and pets, also consider 2025 Toyota 4Runner all-weather floor liners. Verify the seating configuration, cargo-floor design, and gas versus hybrid application before ordering. Do not assume that a listing labeled simply “4Runner” fits every 2025 vehicle.

Add carrying capacity only after checking the roof setup

2025 4Runner cross bars can be useful for skis, bikes, cargo boxes, and camping equipment, but roof accessories are not universally interchangeable. Confirm the vehicle’s roof configuration, mounting points, load limits, and the carrier manufacturer’s fitment instructions. Toyota’s catalog also names Thule cargo and bike products, but a specific box, ski rack, or bike carrier still needs vehicle-specific verification.

Trailhunter buyers should note that the factory vehicle already includes an ARB roof rack. Toyota also lists the Toyota Roof Rack by ARB as an accessory, so confirm what is already installed before paying for duplicate equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery and tire-management equipment

TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter owners who routinely leave maintained roads may want to research 4Runner recovery gear, traction boards, rated recovery points, a tire gauge, and a portable tire inflator. Trailhunter includes an onboard air compressor, but that does not eliminate the need to understand tire pressures, recovery-point ratings, safe winching practices, and local trail requirements.

Recovery equipment does not make off-roading safe by itself. Match every item to the vehicle’s rated attachment points and intended load, and learn how to use it before an emergency. For any accessory, the 2025 model year and exact configuration matter more than a generic “4Runner” label.

Bottom line

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner range becomes much easier to shop once the grades are treated as tools for different jobs. SR5 is the value choice, TRD Sport is for pavement, TRD Off-Road is the capability bargain, Limited and Platinum are the luxury options, TRD Pro is the high-speed off-road specialist, and Trailhunter is the factory overlanding build.

Our pick remains the gas-powered TRD Off-Road Premium. It delivers the trail equipment that gives the 4Runner its purpose while adding the cabin technology and convenience features that matter during the other 90 percent of ownership. Upgrade to i-FORCE MAX when its torque, standard four-wheel drive, AC power supply, or towing capability solves a real need—not simply because the hybrid badge is available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best 2025 Toyota 4Runner grade?

For most buyers, the TRD Off-Road Premium is the best balance. It includes the TRD Off-Road’s trail hardware—18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, and an electronically locking rear differential—plus SofTex seats, a 14-inch screen, JBL audio, Multi-Terrain Monitor, a heated steering wheel, and a hands-free liftgate.

Is the 2025 4Runner TRD Sport good for off-roading?

It can handle light unpaved travel, but TRD Sport is primarily a pavement-oriented grade. Its sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch wheels, and road-oriented tires are less naturally suited to rough trails than the TRD Off-Road’s 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, specialized shocks, and trail-management systems.

Which 2025 4Runner grades have the i-FORCE MAX hybrid?

i-FORCE MAX is standard on Platinum, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter, and available on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited. It produces up to 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Sport Premium are not standard i-FORCE MAX grades in the 2025 lineup.

What is the difference between TRD Pro and Trailhunter?

TRD Pro is the high-speed off-road specialist, with adjustable FOX QS3 shocks, 33-inch Toyo tires, a TRD performance air intake, and distinctive lighting and styling. Trailhunter is the overlanding-oriented build, with Old Man Emu remote-reservoir shocks, an ARB roof rack, an onboard air compressor, a high-mount air intake, and expedition-focused equipment.

Do 2010–2024 4Runner accessories fit the 2025 model?

Do not assume they do. The 2025 4Runner begins the sixth generation, so verify model-year and configuration fitment for cargo liners, floor liners, cross bars, roof boxes, bike carriers, and recovery equipment. Check seating configuration, cargo-floor design, drivetrain or powertrain requirements where applicable, and the manufacturer’s current fitment information.

The Bottom Line

Buy the TRD Off-Road Premium for the best all-around 2025 4Runner. It is the grade that most effectively combines real trail capability with the comfort and technology expected of a daily-driven SUV. Choose the gas engine for the strongest value, i-FORCE MAX for torque, towing, electrical power, or standard four-wheel drive, TRD Pro for high-speed off-road specialization, and Trailhunter only when factory overlanding equipment is central to the plan.
