Outlier MTB’s Void and Pendulum Pedals Put an Open Center Underfoot

Outlier MTB’s Void and Pendulum pedals leave the platform center open. Here’s how the design is meant to work, what reviewers report, and the trade-offs to consider.

Outlier MTB’s Void and Pendulum flat pedals move the axle to the crank-side edge, leaving the platform’s center open. The maker’s design rationale is that a rider’s shoe can flex into that space and engage the outside pins. Independent reviewer Paul Aston describes a planted feel, but the available figures do not establish a controlled, head-to-head grip or weight advantage.

How the open-center design is meant to work

On a conventional flat pedal, the axle runs through the platform. Outlier’s design instead uses a short axle attached at the crank-side edge. With the middle left open, the platform can be thinner, and the shoe can flex downward into the gap. New Atlas describes that flex as helping the shoe engage the perimeter pins; it is the design explanation, not a controlled measurement of grip. New Atlas’s December 2024 report covers the two models.

Both pedals are flats: the rider’s shoe rests on a platform, and pins help resist slipping. Unlike clipless pedals, flats do not attach the shoe to the pedal with a cleat. That leaves the rider free to reposition a foot, a useful distinction when choosing between the broader pedal categories outlined in BikeRadar’s 2026 guide.

Void vs. Pendulum: construction and reported specifications

Detail Void Pendulum
Configuration Double-sided flat pedal Single-sided flat pedal
Platform dimensions 115 × 115 mm (New Atlas, December 2024) 120 × 115 mm (New Atlas, December 2024)
Thickness 9.85 mm (New Atlas, December 2024) 14 mm at the middle; 7 mm at the edges (New Atlas, December 2024)
Position relative to axle Not stated in New Atlas’s report Platform sits 6 mm below the axle center (New Atlas, December 2024)
Materials and pins CNC-machined 7075 aluminum; 18 M4 steel pins total, nine per side; each pin projects 5.71 mm (New Atlas, December 2024) Pin count and projection are not stated in New Atlas’s report
Bearings Oil-filled 6902 bearings (New Atlas, December 2024) Not stated in New Atlas’s report
Reported mass per pair 458 g, New Atlas (December 2024); 404 g, reviewer-reported by Paul Aston 414 g, New Atlas (December 2024); 378 g, reviewer-reported by Paul Aston
Historical reported price CA$299 (New Atlas, December 2024; also listed by AstonMTB) CA$299 (New Atlas, December 2024; also listed by AstonMTB)

The two sources give different pair weights for both pedals: New Atlas reports 458 g for the Void and 414 g for the Pendulum, while Paul Aston’s Void comparison reports 404 g and 378 g, respectively. The reason for the discrepancy is not established, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable or as proof of a specific weight saving. The CA$299 prices are historical reports, not verified current prices.

What riding reviews say about grip and stability

Aston describes the shoe pressing into the open center and fitting against the perimeter pins, producing what he characterizes as a concave, planted contact. In his words, “The axle-less design essentially offers an unlimited concave as your sole presses right through the middle: the heavier you are the more grip you will create.” That is the reviewer’s description of his experience, not a validated rule or quantified result. His Pendulum review also describes the pins biting into the sole and says the pedal felt stable while descending and helped him maintain a heels-down position.

In Aston’s comparison, the Pendulum felt more stable in rough terrain, which he attributes to its low, underslung position. That placement is also a trade-off: a pedal platform below the axle can reduce ground clearance and raise concern about strikes. These are rider impressions, not outcomes established across riders, shoes or trails.

Which design suits which riding style?

Choose the Void if easy foot placement matters

The Void’s double-sided platform gives a rider a usable pin face regardless of which side is up after a foot comes off. Aston recommends it for riders who dab often, ride technical or trials terrain, or want less fuss when returning a foot to the pedal.

Consider the Pendulum if a planted feel takes priority

The Pendulum’s bottom-heavy layout is intended to make it self-righting, allowing pins on only its riding side. Aston favors it for riders seeking a planted downhill or enduro feel who do not frequently remove their feet. The cost of that single-sided setup is that a foot dab can leave the pedal upside down, requiring the rider to flip or reposition it before remounting.

Trade-offs to check before buying

  • Fit your shoe to the platform: compare platform dimensions with your shoe sole and riding style. A larger platform can support more of the shoe, but size is not automatically a better fit.
  • Check pin layout and serviceability: pin count, placement, shape, projection and replaceability affect how a pedal meets a shoe. The available Void specification gives a pin count and projection; the cited New Atlas report does not give equivalent Pendulum pin details.
  • Account for clearance: the Pendulum’s lower position is part of its stability rationale, but may be a drawback where pedal strikes are a concern.
  • Consider handling sharp pins: Aston reports that the threaded pins caught his legs and clothing while he was moving the bike. Take care when carrying or handling a pedal with exposed pins.
  • Verify the current offer: the cited CA$299 price is historical. Current availability, price, warranty terms and service details are not established by these sources.
  • Compare like with like: weigh mass alongside dimensions, double- versus single-sided use, pin setup and clearance. The reported weights differ by source, and neither set alone demonstrates a universal performance advantage.

For category comparisons beyond Outlier’s two designs, BikeRadar’s mountain-bike pedal guide discusses platform size, weight, pedal strikes, riding style and shoe choice. A standard flat pedal may share a platform-and-pin layout without sharing Outlier’s open-center axle design.
