An added frame section supports the second wheel, and a second chain synchronizes the halves so one tire section can meet the ground as the other rises. It is a rideable custom demonstration, not an established consumer bicycle or a design with reported safety testing.
Who made the split-wheel bicycle?
The custom bike was built by Sergii Gordieiev, who publishes videos as The Q. His video, “Just a Normal Bike Math: 0.5 х 2 = 1 Wheel”, was published June 24, 2022. New Atlas reported on the build on July 4, 2022.
How the two half-wheels work
Rather than cutting a normal rear wheel in place and leaving a single incomplete wheel, the design uses two separate half-wheels aligned front to back. An extended rear triangle reaches behind the original rear-wheel position to support the second wheel.
A second chain connects the rear wheels and keeps their half-wheel sections in opposite orientations. As the assembly rotates, one half-tire is positioned to contact the ground while the other half-wheel lifts. The alternating contact is the core of the design: the two incomplete wheels cooperate to provide a sequence of ground contacts. New Atlas describes the mechanism and frame extension in its report on the split-wheel bike.

How the builder modified the rear assembly
New Atlas reports that Gordieiev cut two rear rims nearly in half while preserving their hubs, then trimmed tire sections to fit. The report says he recreated the inner tube with material that looked like PVC pipe and plugged the ends; PVC is the reporter’s visual description, not a confirmed material specification.
He refitted the disc brake and rear sprocket and welded an extended rear triangle to the bicycle to carry the additional wheel. The account describes a one-off fabrication process, not a standardized conversion procedure or set of build specifications.

What riding it is reported to feel like
New Atlas calls the bicycle rideable and describes three bumps when it is dropped off a curb, rather than the two a conventional bicycle would typically produce in the same situation. That is an observation in the report, not a measured or controlled ride test. The Q’s video description calls it a bicycle one could “ride every day,” but that is the creator’s characterization, not independent evidence of everyday suitability.

The available accounts establish that this custom build was assembled and demonstrated as a rideable bicycle. They do not report controlled results for braking, handling, durability, or everyday road use, nor do they provide a safety certification, measured performance data, or repeatable fabrication specifications.

They also do not identify a retail split-wheel bicycle or a standard conversion kit. The project is best understood as an inventive mechanical demonstration, not a proven alternative to a conventional rear wheel.
