An outboard motor throttle controller is usually the remote control box and the cables or electronic components that connect it to the engine. On a typical remote setup, one lever controls both throttle and gear shift. Controls are not automatically interchangeable: check the exact outboard make, model, year, control system, cable ends and length, harness, and installation-kit requirements before buying.
What an outboard throttle controller does
A remote control box lets the operator control engine speed and select forward, neutral, or reverse from the helm. In a mechanical arrangement, the control lever moves separate throttle and shift cables. Some installations also need a cable harness. The parts must work together with the engine; changing or improvising connectors does not by itself establish compatibility.
Tohatsu describes its control boxes as remote throttle and shift controls and offers different box styles and conversion kits. It directs owners to a dealer to identify the appropriate kit for a specific engine model. Tohatsu control boxes and cables
Types of remote control systems
Mechanical control box
A mechanical box operates the engine through throttle and shift cables. Confirm that the control and engine accept compatible cable ends and connections, and that the cables are the required length and can follow the boat’s route without binding. Some installations may also require a harness; check the engine’s instructions and the contents of the specific kit.

- 【EASY & SMOOTH OPERATION】- Exceptionally smooth operation is delivered, To shift into forward and reverse, rotate the control lever downward, further rotated downward, the throttle opens.
- 【SHUT-OFF LANYARD & CLIP】- The cord can secure the operation by being attached to the operator's clothing, or arm, or leg. Should operators fall down or leave the helm, the cord will pull out the clip, stopping ignition.
- 【ADJUSTABLE THROTTLE FRICTION】- By turning in or out the throttle friction screw of the remote control box, the stiffness of the control lever can be adjusted.
- 【FOR BOTH SHIFT AND THROTTLE】- The remote control box is so designed that both shift and throttle can be actuated by operating a remote control lever. So it is convenient for you for sure.
- FOR YAMAHA OUTBOARD】- This Yamaha 703 Premium Side Control Push 10P Keychoke part fits Yamaha T8, F15, F25-F225, 40-250 electric start outboards.
Electronic throttle control
Electronic systems use electrical signals and the appropriate harness or components rather than relying solely on mechanical cable movement. Ultraflex describes its B184 as a mechanical or hybrid single-lever, dual-action control for throttle and shift; its B184-ETC version is listed as available on request and specifies a sensor output. That product information does not establish compatibility with a particular outboard. Confirm the engine’s electronic-control requirements with its manufacturer or authorized dealer. Tiller-to-remote conversion kit
A conversion kit can provide remote steering, throttle, and shift functions on an engine originally configured for tiller operation. Tohatsu offers remote-control fitting kits but says buyers should ask a dealer which kit fits their engine model. A conversion may involve more than the control box, so verify all required engine-side parts and installation components. Tohatsu control boxes and cables

Made from durable thermoplastic insulation, these harnesses are built for longevity. For installation, turn off the ignition, take off the key, and disconnect all power and cables.
How to check compatibility before buying
Do not choose a control solely because its connectors appear similar or because new connectors could be fitted. Compatibility depends on the engine and control architecture, as well as the parts and installation requirements for that application.
- Identify the engine: record its manufacturer, exact model, and year, then consult its manual or an authorized dealer.
- Confirm the control system: determine whether the engine uses mechanical cables, electronic controls, or a specified hybrid arrangement.
- Match the connections: verify cable ends, control-box connections, engine-side connectors, and any required wiring harness.
- Measure and plan the route: establish the cable length needed for the actual path, with room for steering and engine movement and no sharp bends or obstructions.
- Check the kit contents: establish whether the box, throttle and shift cables, harness, mounting hardware, and conversion parts are included or must be sourced separately.
- Verify neutral-start protection: confirm that the control and engine pairing includes the required neutral safety switch or interlock.
- Confirm support: ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer to verify the specific control-and-engine combination before purchase or installation.
Installation and cable routing
Follow the installation instructions for the exact engine and control system. A control box should be positioned within the operator’s reach, where obstacles will not interfere with its operation or cable movement.

Tohatsu’s 2017 M4–5B manual gives model-specific routing guidance: measure the cable route, prepare cable 300–450 mm (11.8–17.7 inches) longer than that measured distance, and check the route before final installation. It warns against sharp bends, excess tension, and obstructions, and cautions that looping cable to a diameter of 406 mm (16 inches) or less can affect service life. These figures apply to that manual’s instructions, not universally to every outboard or control. Tohatsu M4–5B owner’s manual (2017)

Neutral-start safety
A neutral safety switch or interlock helps prevent starting when the gear is engaged. In its MFS25B/30B installation instructions, Tohatsu warns that a remote-control box without a neutral safety switch can allow the engine to start in gear, potentially causing passengers to fall or be thrown overboard. Check the safety provisions required for the actual engine and control pairing; do not assume a control has the needed protection based on appearance alone. What to buy
Search for an outboard remote control box only after identifying the engine and control system. Depending on the application, you may need a box, separate outboard throttle and shift cables, a harness, a mounting kit, or a remote conversion kit. Confirm the exact parts and fitment with the engine manual or an authorized dealer; product categories and available model ranges can change.
