EB corbos is a family of automotive software building blocks, not a single Linux image. Its open-source operating system, EB corbos Linux, is built on Ubuntu; a separate EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications extension adds hypervisor-based monitoring and has a vendor-reported safety assessment. The distinction matters: the free SDK is for prototyping, while production use is a separate offer with support and project terms.

What is EB corbos?

Elektrobit presents EB corbos as a set of software building blocks for automotive high-performance computing and software-defined vehicle development. Its product family includes three distinct offerings:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • EB corbos Linux: an open-source operating system for automotive applications.
  • EB corbos AdaptiveCore: Adaptive AUTOSAR middleware, according to Elektrobit.
  • EB corbos Link: middleware that Elektrobit describes as connecting Android applications to automotive electronic control units (ECUs).

These products serve different roles; the family name does not mean they are one package or interchangeable. See Elektrobit’s EB corbos product family.

What is open source in EB corbos Linux?

Elektrobit describes EB corbos Linux as built on Ubuntu and tailored for embedded automotive environments. Canonical and Elektrobit announced the Ubuntu-based collaboration on 2023-02-21; that announcement establishes the product’s Ubuntu foundation, not that every EB corbos component is governed or licensed identically to Ubuntu. Elektrobit names several additions and components in its open-source overview:

  • elos, a structured event-logging framework.
  • crinit and cominit, lightweight, deterministic Linux unit packages.
  • A minimal container solution.
  • Rupdate, a modular, Rust-based over-the-air (OTA) update mechanism.

Elektrobit also says it participates in the Linux Foundation projects ELISA and Automotive Grade Linux, and that it made the safety Linux available within Eclipse S-CORE for integration and evaluation. These statements describe involvement and availability; they do not establish that all named projects share the same license, governance, maintenance, or support arrangement. Altera Cyclone IV FPGA Development Board - DueProLogic
  • Altera Cyclone IV FPGA includes 6,000 Logic Elements with two clock multipliers. The Cyclone IV FPGA is the perfect balance of inexpensive cost versus plentiful logic cells, 20KBytes of SRAM, and General Purpose Input/Output pins. This is a great board to learn how to program FPGA's.
  • Built in programmer cable allows configuring the FPGA with a single USB-C cable. The DPL can be powered from the USB cable or from the Barrel Connector. A separate JTAG header can also be used to program the FPGA using a compatible USB Blaster cable.
  • 6x6 LED Array allows character and animations to be displayed at ultra fast speed. LED blocks can be individually turned on/off to allow LED signals to be used as I/O's
  • 70 Inputs/Outputs originating at the FPGA are available at Stackable Headers organized around the edge of the board. The user can configure these I/O's using the FPGA project code.
  • The DPL contains two oscillators, 66MHz and 100MHz. The 66MHz oscillator is used to provide clocking for the EPT ActiveHost USB communications core. The 100MHz oscillator can be used by the user clocked up using one of the onboard Clock-DLL modules.

How does the safety extension differ?

EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications is a distinct extension of EB corbos Linux, also built on Ubuntu. Elektrobit says it uses an external monitoring component hosted in a hypervisor environment to intercept and validate kernel actions. Its product page says it brings safety monitoring to an advanced level; that is Elektrobit’s characterization, not an independent performance finding. (Elektrobit product page)

In an announcement dated 2024-04-23, Elektrobit said the product received a positive TÜV NORD technical assessment as a Safety Element out of Context (SEooC), based on ISO 26262 ASIL B and IEC 61508 SIL 2. This is the scope of the vendor’s reported assessment. It should not be read as a claim that TÜV certified the Linux kernel by itself, or that the assessment automatically covers a customer’s complete vehicle system. Vehicle-level safety still depends on how components are integrated, validated, and used in the project. (Elektrobit’s 2024 announcement)

For engineering decisions, keep three layers separate: upstream and community software; Elektrobit’s automotive-specific components and support; and the customer’s safety case for the complete system. A component’s stated assessment does not remove system integrator responsibilities.

What does the free SDK provide, and can it be used in production?

Elektrobit labels its free SDK as a prototyping package and says it is unsuitable for mass production. The download edition is described as including a basic QEMU image, EB corbos Hypervisor packages, and getting-started and developer guides. Access is subject to review by Elektrobit’s export-control team. The company also describes an AWS cloud edition; access requires AWS account information. (Elektrobit’s access page)

Elektrobit separately describes a production-grade offer. Its page lists the safety product, QEMU, a hypervisor extension, safety-compatible Arm v8-A hardware, updates, development support, CVE and defect fixes, long-term maintenance, warranty and liability, and a safety-certified toolchain and libraries. These are offer-page descriptions rather than a guarantee that every item applies to every project; confirm current scope, availability, and commercial terms with Elektrobit before selecting it for a production program.

What does “up to 15 years of maintenance” mean?

Elektrobit’s 2024 announcement states “up to 15 years of maintenance.” “Up to” is a vendor-stated maximum, not a universal entitlement or promise for every configuration. Applicability depends on the product and the actual commercial agreement. (Elektrobit’s 2024 announcement)

Where does EB corbos fit in current automotive software work?

On 2026-05-27, ETAS announced an integrated ADAS software foundation combining EB corbos Linux for Safety Applications with the ETAS Vehicle Software Platform Suite ADAS profile. This documents an announced integration and partnership; it does not establish measured performance or production deployment in a specific vehicle. (ETAS announcement)

For a team evaluating open-source Linux for automotive, the practical question is which layer it needs: a Linux base for evaluation, the separate safety extension, or a production arrangement with defined support and project obligations. EB corbos is relevant as a vendor-supported automotive software offering built around open-source technology, but the cited product information does not provide independent comparative benchmarks or establish outcomes across vehicle programs.
