Ontario has not publicly established a blanket ban on Teslas or electric vehicles for road tests. The reported North Bay incident appears to have been a dispute over how the province’s ban on relying on electronic driving aids was applied to a Tesla Model Y’s regenerative braking and driver alerts—not proof that an EV cannot be used for a Class G test.
According to a September 15, 2025 report by Drive Tesla Canada, an Ontario family said their teenage daughter was failed during a road test after using the family’s Tesla Model Y Long Range. The family said the examiner objected to the vehicle’s regenerative braking and an audible green-light chime, even though the teenager was told she had achieved a perfect score. The family also said she was not issued a pass.
Those details come from the family’s account as reported by a secondary source. The available information does not include an authoritative public decision from DriveTest or Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation confirming that the result was reversed, that the test was reclassified, or that a free retest was granted.

What reportedly happened
The family used the Model Y because its truck was unavailable. During the test, the examiner reportedly described the Tesla as “too high tech,” raised concerns about regenerative braking, and objected that the applicant was not using the conventional brake pedal in the way expected.
In a Tesla, releasing the accelerator can slow the vehicle substantially through regenerative braking. That means a driver may control speed with the accelerator pedal and use the brake pedal less often than they would in a conventional gasoline vehicle. The family considered that normal operation of the Tesla and said the teenager had otherwise completed the test successfully.
The report also said the vehicle produced an audible chime when the traffic light turned green. Tesla describes this as an alert that can be available when a vehicle is stopped at a red light and the light changes, depending on the vehicle’s configuration and settings. It is a driver-information feature; it does not, by itself, steer, accelerate, or control the vehicle.
The examiner’s interpretation and the family’s account have not been independently adjudicated in the sources reviewed. It would therefore be inaccurate to state that the teenager legally “passed” the test, even if the family was told she had received a perfect score.

What Ontario’s road-test rules actually prohibit
Ontario’s official driver handbook says applicants may not use electronic driving aids during a road test. The examples include:

- Automatic parallel-parking systems
- Lane-monitoring or lane-assistance systems
- Cruise control
- Back cameras as a substitute for required observation
The handbook says applicants must demonstrate the skills needed to operate a motor vehicle without relying on those aids. That includes visible shoulder checks and mirror checks, rather than depending on cameras, blind-spot alerts, or other electronic systems.
DriveTest’s published vehicle-requirements information focuses on whether the vehicle is safe, roadworthy, and compliant with Ministry of Transportation standards. It identifies conditions that can make a vehicle or test out of order, including certain safety defects and recording-device issues. The published requirements reviewed do not list Teslas or electric vehicles as a prohibited category.
| Question | What the available information supports |
|---|---|
| Are Teslas categorically banned from Ontario road tests? | No. The published DriveTest requirements reviewed do not establish a blanket Tesla ban. |
| Are electric vehicles categorically banned? | No such general ban is established by the sources reviewed. |
| Can an applicant rely on lane assistance, cruise control, automated parking, or cameras instead of observation? | No. Ontario’s handbook says electronic driving aids may not be used during the test. |
| Does the research establish that regenerative braking itself is prohibited? | No. The sources do not state that regenerative braking, as a vehicle operating characteristic, is prohibited. |
| Was this teenager’s result officially overturned? | The available research does not verify a final complaint outcome or an official reversal. |
Why regenerative braking became the centre of the dispute
Tesla’s Model Y documentation explains that regenerative braking slows the vehicle when the driver releases the accelerator and returns some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy to the battery. Depending on settings, battery condition, temperature, and driving conditions, the amount of deceleration can vary.
Tesla also says regenerative deceleration can activate the brake lights, even when the driver is not pressing the conventional brake pedal. To someone accustomed to a gasoline-powered car, the vehicle may appear to be braking without the brake pedal being used. To an EV driver, that can be the expected response to lifting off the accelerator.
That distinction matters in a road test. An examiner is assessing safe vehicle control, not simply whether the applicant has operated the vehicle in the same way as a conventional car. At the same time, Tesla warns drivers not to assume regenerative braking will always provide the expected deceleration. Drivers must remain prepared to use the brake pedal when necessary.

Regenerative braking is therefore not the same thing as an automated driving aid. It is part of the vehicle’s propulsion and braking system. However, an examiner could still question an applicant if the applicant appeared unable to control speed, failed to respond appropriately, or seemed to be relying on a feature rather than demonstrating deliberate control. The available reporting does not establish precisely what the examiner observed or which official rule was cited.
What the green-light chime does—and does not do
The green-light chime is an alert. In configurations where it is enabled, it can notify the driver that a traffic signal has changed from red to green. The driver still has to look at the intersection, assess traffic and pedestrians, and decide whether it is safe to proceed.

The chime does not prove that the Tesla was driving autonomously, and its presence alone does not show that the applicant relied on prohibited automation.
Nevertheless, the incident suggests that the examiner considered the vehicle’s alerts and braking behaviour relevant to the assessment of driver control. Ontario’s published guidance is framed around reliance on electronic aids, while the individual examiner’s reported decision remains disputed.
How to take a Tesla or other EV to an Ontario road test
An EV can behave differently enough from a conventional training car that preparation should cover both Ontario’s test rules and the vehicle’s specific controls.

- Check the current official requirements before booking or attending. Read the current Ontario driver handbook and DriveTest vehicle-requirements guidance. Rules, test procedures, and vehicle policies can change.
- Contact the test centre about unusual configurations. If you are concerned that a vehicle might be considered out of order, ask the DriveTest centre before the appointment. Do not assume that a vehicle accepted for ordinary road use will automatically be accepted in every test configuration.
- Disable or avoid prohibited assistance features. Do not use cruise control, automated parking, lane-keeping or lane-monitoring assistance, or other features that take over or materially assist the driving task. Know how to turn them off before arriving.
- Use mirrors and perform visible shoulder checks. A rear-view camera, blind-spot warning, or other display does not replace the observations required during the test. Make shoulder and mirror checks clear enough for the examiner to see.
- Know the accelerator-to-deceleration response. Practice smooth speed changes, intersections, stops, hills, and low-speed manoeuvres in the exact vehicle that will be used. Regenerative braking can feel different depending on the selected settings and conditions.
- Be ready to use the brake pedal. Even if one-pedal-style driving is familiar, the applicant should be able to brake conventionally whenever safety, traffic, a road condition, or the examiner’s instruction requires it.
- Understand alerts without treating them as instructions. A green-light chime or blind-spot alert is not a substitute for checking the road. Continue to scan the intersection and make the driving decision yourself.
- Consider EV-specific practice. An EV-familiar driving instructor can help an applicant demonstrate smooth control while avoiding reliance on driver-assistance systems. This is a practical preparation option, not a guarantee of a pass and not a recommendation of any particular school.
These steps reduce ambiguity, but they cannot guarantee a passing result. The applicant must still follow the examiner’s instructions and meet the safety and road-rule standards for the applicable test.

Ask, calmly and immediately if possible, which specific action or feature caused the concern. Make a written record of the date, test centre, vehicle, settings, examiner’s explanation, and the result shown on any paperwork. Preserve any appointment or test documentation.
If the applicant believes a prohibited aid was not used, contact the relevant DriveTest centre or Ontario authority through its current official complaint or review process and ask what evidence or procedure applies. A disputed result should not be described publicly as proof of a province-wide policy unless DriveTest or the Ministry confirms that policy.

The story highlights a genuine transition problem: licensing tests and examiner expectations developed around conventional vehicles now encounter regenerative braking, camera-based visibility systems, audible alerts, and increasingly complex controls.
But the evidence available here is one disputed case. It does not demonstrate systemic discrimination against EVs, a province-wide examiner directive, a formal Ontario policy change, or a ban on Tesla road tests. The most accurate conclusion is narrower: an examiner reportedly treated aspects of a Tesla’s operation as inconsistent with the test, while the family believed the teenager had driven the vehicle correctly. Ontario’s published materials prohibit reliance on specified electronic driving aids, but the reviewed sources do not specifically establish that regenerative braking itself is prohibited.
