The often-mentioned figures of ten and six refer to different categories: BMW also describes ten road-legal cars for the homologation effort, and says six cars were completed before the program ended, including three development cars later recycled.
How many BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion cars were made?
The answer depends on what is being counted. BMW of North America’s 2015 account says six cars were completed: three engineering development cars, which were later recycled, and three production-level examples that remain in BMW Group Classic. BMW M’s 2021 feature calls the road-legal homologation effort a ten-car production run, while BMW Group Classic also describes a small series of ten vehicles.
Those published descriptions do not give a single, fully reconciled production ledger. The title’s “only three” refers specifically to the three production-level Strassenversion cars—not to every road-legal or development car associated with the project. BMW’s accounts do not describe those three as ordinary customer deliveries.
Why did BMW build a road-going M3 GTR?
The standard E46 M3 used a straight-six engine. For its American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT race car, BMW developed the compact 4.0-litre P60B40 V8, an engine that was not used in a regular-series M3. The Strassenversion was the road-going counterpart created as part of the homologation effort to support the race car.

BMW M says the M3 GTR finished first and third in seven of the ten ALMS GT races in 2001. For 2002, the series-model requirement changed from ten to at least 100 homologation models; BMW says the M3 GTR then withdrew from the US series. Related M3 GTRs continued racing in Europe from 2003 to 2005, including at the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

How did the road car differ from the ALMS race car?
The Strassenversion retained the race program’s V8 concept but had road-car output and equipment. BMW M gives the road version 258 kW (350 hp), compared with 330 kW (460 hp) for the race car, and attributes part of the lower road-car output to noise and exhaust regulations.

The road car’s engine used dry-sump lubrication, as did the race version. BMW says the P60B40 was not used in another series model. The comparison is between BMW’s stated configurations; the road-car specifications should not be mistaken for race-car figures.

What were the Strassenversion’s specifications?
BMW M’s published road-car figures are:
- Maximum output: 258 kW (350 hp).
- Maximum torque: 365 Nm at 5,000 rpm.
- Engine displacement: 3,997 cm³.
- Curb weight: 1,350 kg.
- Maximum speed: 295 km/h.
BMW describes a six-speed manual gearbox, a two-disc motorsport clutch and a variable limited-slip differential. Carbon components included the roof and aerodynamic body parts. The car also had revised front and rear skirts and a rear wing. BMW says these measures reduced weight by 185 kg compared with a manual E46 M3.

The Strassenversion was a two-seater with a deliberately stripped cabin: it had no rear seats, air conditioning or radio. BMW says it was offered only in Titan silver metallic and had an all-black interior. Its sales leaflet, as reproduced by BMW M, described the trade-off this way: “Those who want to win, have to be able to do without – the puristic interior of a winner”. BMW does not name the sentence’s original author.
