The Saab 9-2X looked like a small Saab wagon, but its foundation was Subaru: it shared much of the Impreza’s structure, all-wheel-drive powertrain and mechanical hardware. Sold in North America for the 2005 and 2006 model years, it combined that familiar Subaru base with Saab-specific styling and trim. The result was neither simply an Impreza with a badge nor a wholly separate Saab design.
What was the Saab 9-2X?
The 9-2X was a compact sport wagon introduced for the 2005 model year and discontinued after 2006. It was sold in North America and came in two versions: Linear and Aero. Contemporary coverage reported that sales began in July 2004, ahead of the first model year.
Its unusual identity came from the division of work: Subaru supplied much of the underlying car, while Saab gave the wagon its own exterior appearance and cabin details. Saab chassis engineer Per Jansson described the sporty-segment goal to Cars.com this way: “fun-to-drive character [is] the price of entry.”
How much of it was a Subaru Impreza?
The 9-2X was based on the Subaru Impreza and retained substantial Subaru structure and mechanical equipment. Cars.com characterizes it as a joint Saab/Subaru effort, noting that much of its basic structure and all-wheel-drive powertrain came from Subaru. It also reports full-time all-wheel drive as standard.

That common foundation did not make the two wagons identical in every detail. Saab-specific exterior styling and cabin treatment distinguished the 9-2X, while its underlying architecture and many mechanical components connected it closely to the Impreza. The simplest accurate description is a Saab-styled, Subaru-based wagon.
What changed between the Linear and Aero?
The Linear and Aero were the 9-2X’s two versions. The Aero was the turbocharged, performance-oriented model, and its engine specification changed between the two model years.

Those figures belong to specific model years; “227 hp” is not a specification for every 9-2X Aero. The available cited coverage does not establish a comparable engine-and-output figure for the Linear, so it should not be inferred from the Aero figures.
Why did Saab and Subaru build it together?
The 9-2X gave Saab a compact wagon with all-wheel drive and a sporty character while drawing on an existing Subaru platform and mechanical package. The styling and cabin details helped it read as a Saab, but its mechanical kinship with the Impreza was central to the car’s identity.

There was broader corporate context: Subaru’s annual report records that a new SUV development alliance with Saab was agreed in July 2004. That entry provides context for the companies’ relationship; on its own, it does not establish the precise development terms for the 9-2X.

Consumer Guide reports just over 10,000 U.S. sales across the 9-2X’s two-year run. That is the publication’s reported total, not a primary Saab or Subaru production count.
