The Oldsmobile W-31 was a 350-cubic-inch Force-Air performance package for the F-85 and Cutlass—not a 4-4-2. For 1970, Oldsmobile’s factory information kit rated its Force-Air V-8 at 325 horsepower, using the period rating convention. Published historical fact sheets report 913 W-31s built for 1969 and 1,352 for 1970.
What was the Oldsmobile W-31?
The W-31 was Oldsmobile’s small-displacement performance package for F-85 and Cutlass buyers. Its defining feature was a high-performance 350-cubic-inch Force-Air V-8. A specialist Oldsmobile archive describes the 1968 predecessor as the Ram Rod 350; the W-31 name and package belong to the later F-85/Cutlass story.
Oldsmobile Division’s 1970 information kit lists the engine as a “325-HP Force-Air Rocket V-8 H.C.” and associates the 350 application with F-85. That 325-hp figure is the factory’s period rating, not a modern net-horsepower figure, so it should not be compared directly with present-day ratings without accounting for the different conventions. Oldsmobile Heritage
Was the W-31 a 4-4-2?
No. The W-31 and 4-4-2 were distinct Oldsmobile performance offerings. The W-31 paired a 350 with F-85/Cutlass applications; the 4-4-2 was a separate model and option story associated with larger-engine choices. The “W” designation alone does not make a car a 4-4-2. A specialist historical overview places the W-31 in the F-85/Cutlass line rather than the 4-4-2 option list. Oldsmobile Club of America

How many 1969 and 1970 W-31s were made?
Over-Drive Magazine’s 2024 historical fact sheets report 913 W-31s for 1969 and 1,352 for 1970. These are published compilation figures, not totals independently confirmed here against an original factory production ledger. The same fact sheets give these body-style breakdowns:
| Model year | Published production breakdown | Reported total |
|---|---|---|
| 1969 | 212 F-85 club coupes; 106 Cutlass club coupes; 569 Cutlass S Holiday coupes; 26 Cutlass S Holiday convertibles | 913 |
| 1970 | 207 F-85 club coupes; 116 Cutlass club coupes; 1,029 Cutlass S Holiday coupes | 1,352 |
The reported 1969 total includes 26 convertibles; the 1970 fact sheet lists coupe body styles only. The figures and breakdowns are from Over-Drive Magazine’s 2024 W-31 fact sheets: 1969 Oldsmobile W-31 fact sheet and 1970 Oldsmobile W-31 fact sheet. Low production can make a W-31 uncommon, but rarity by itself does not establish a particular car’s value or authenticity.

How to identify a W-31
Specialist historical guidance points to distinctive induction equipment and body details as inspection clues. For 1970, the W-25 outside-air hood is one visible feature; black inner fenders are another detail associated with the package. These clues can help direct an inspection, but appearance alone cannot authenticate a car. Over-Drive Magazine’s 1970 fact sheet
For an identification decision, compare the car’s year, body style, equipment and documentation with a matching-year factory service manual or recognized Oldsmobile marque reference. Transmission availability and associated equipment varied by year and configuration. Historical guidance references manual transmissions and the TH-350 automatic, but that is not an exhaustive list of combinations; verify a specific car against year-specific records rather than relying on a generalized checklist.

Why the W-31 matters
The W-31 is a useful counterpoint to the familiar big-engine muscle-car narrative: Oldsmobile offered serious performance in an F-85/Cutlass package centered on a 350. Its reported production totals are modest compared with mass-market output, while its distinction from the 4-4-2 gives it a separate place in the marque’s performance history. The factory’s 1970 rating and the period-specific equipment explain the package; the published production figures add context, but neither substitutes for documentation when evaluating an individual car.
