For an Oldsmobile restoration or a project built around a correctly identified, supportable Oldsmobile 425 package, choose the Rocket. In a cross-brand swap, neither wins on displacement alone: chassis clearance, transmission and converter compatibility, sump, cooling, engine condition, and parts support decide the fit.
What the factory ratings say—and what they do not
The published figures below are historical specifications, not a modern, controlled comparison or a promise of output from an aged or rebuilt engine. Buick and Oldsmobile entries also differ by year and configuration, so they should not be treated as a direct road-performance ranking.

Team Buick also lists a 425 Nailhead reference point—340 brake horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 465 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm for a four-barrel “Wildcat 465”—but that is a different Buick engine from the 401 in this comparison.
The figures establish that configuration matters; they do not establish which engine will be quicker, more reliable, or more powerful in your car. No controlled side-by-side dyno test or matched comparison of current rebuilt engines is documented by these sources.

Which engine belongs in which kind of build?
Choose the Buick 401 for a Buick-centered project
The 401 makes the clearest case in a Buick restoration, a period-correct Buick build, or a project where the appearance and identity of a Nailhead are central. Buick’s 401 arrived in 1959, followed by the 425 in 1963; the 425 appeared in models including the Riviera, Wildcat, and Electra. Some period Super Wildcat packages used dual four-barrel carburetors. Choose the Oldsmobile 425 for an Oldsmobile-centered project
The Oldsmobile 425 debuted for 1965. It is the natural candidate for an Oldsmobile that originally used one, or for a build with a correctly identified and supportable Oldsmobile 425 package. Its applications are not interchangeable by assumption: the Toronado engine differs internally from other 425 applications, so identify the year, block code, and application before sourcing parts. For a swap into another make, start with the car
Neither engine is automatically the easier swap. Before choosing, establish the target chassis, originality goals, actual engine condition, and the full package you can obtain—not just the advertised long block. A sound, complete engine with confirmed fitment and parts support may be a better choice than a theoretically appealing engine that requires extensive adaptation.
Check fitment before buying
Buick Nailhead swap guidance identifies several issues that can affect a build. These are Buick-specific cautions; do not assume the Oldsmobile 425 has the same dimensions or interfaces.

- Transmission and converter: Centerville Auto Rep says 1964–1966 Buick 401/425 crankshaft converter centers do not match 1957–1963 Dynaflow converters. Confirm the exact crank, converter, and transmission combination.
- Steering and starter clearance: Starter-to-steering-box interference can arise in swaps. Check the actual engine position and steering components in the target chassis.
- Sump and chassis: Confirm oil-pan or sump clearance, mounts, distributor clearance, exhaust routing, rear axle needs, and any chassis adaptations.
- Cooling: A Buick specialist describes 401/425 Nailheads as wider than smaller Nailheads, estimates their weight at about 620 lb, and cautions that cooling may be harder in an early car with a small radiator and closed hood. Treat this as supplier guidance, not a matched weight comparison with the Oldsmobile; verify the dressed engine and the cooling system in your car.
- Package completeness: Check what is included and whether the engine’s accessories, intake, exhaust, mounts, transmission parts, and other needed components match your intended setup.

“425” by itself is not enough for ordering parts. Buick and Oldsmobile 425s are separate engine families, not interchangeable versions of one design. The Sealed Power catalog indexes Buick and Oldsmobile 425 OHV V8 applications separately. Search by manufacturer, engine family, year, and application, then confirm the catalog number with the supplier.

There is a documented rebuild-parts route for Oldsmobile 425s: RPM Ron / EGGE lists kits for 1965 applications and for 1966–1967 Toronado applications, as well as other components. That listing establishes a parts source, not current inventory, price, exact kit contents, or compatibility with an unidentified block. Confirm those details with the seller. For Buick Nailhead fitment, Centerville Auto Rep describes Buick-specific mounts, transmission adapters, torque-tube elimination, and other swap parts. Use a specialist’s catalog or advice as a starting point, then confirm that each part matches your year, transmission, and chassis. A part’s existence does not prove it fits every Buick 401 installation.

A practical decision checklist
- Set the build goal. If the goal is a correct Buick or Oldsmobile restoration, favor the engine family that belongs to the car. For a custom swap, decide how much adaptation and loss of originality are acceptable.
- Record exact identities. Note the target car’s year and chassis, the engine’s make, year, block code, and application, and whether an Oldsmobile 425 is a Toronado version.
- Confirm interfaces and clearances. Measure the engine bay and steering clearance; identify the transmission and converter; check sump, mounts, distributor, exhaust, cooling, and rear-axle requirements.
- Compare complete, verified packages. Check engine condition, included parts, supplier support, and the parts list needed to finish the installation. Do not assume equal displacement means equal parts availability or compatibility.
- Get fitment and parts confirmation in writing. Give the builder or supplier the exact engine and chassis details, and verify applications and catalog numbers before ordering.
