The original claim is therefore best understood as a dated announcement, not a description of Ola’s current lineup.
Which Ola scooter was about $500?
New Atlas reported that Ola announced four models in December 2024: the commercial Gig and Gig+, and the passenger-oriented S1 Z and S1 Z+. The Gig’s reported starting price was ₹39,999, which the article converted to about US$472 at the time. These were Indian prices, not US retail prices; the dollar figure was a contemporaneous conversion.
The other announced models cost more. New Atlas reported ₹49,999 for the Gig+, ₹59,999 as the starting price for the S1 Z, and ₹64,999 for the S1 Z+. The “under $500” headline applies most closely to the base Gig, not to every scooter in the announcement. New Atlas’s December 2024 report described the Gig line as intended for commercial use and the S1 Z family as passenger scooters.
What did the 2024 announcement say about batteries and range?
New Atlas described the announced Gig as using a removable 1.5-kWh battery, with a reported range of 112 km and a maximum speed of 25 km/h. For the Gig+, it reported a single- or dual-battery configuration: 81 km of range with one battery and 157 km with two, with a maximum speed of 45 km/h.

For the passenger S1 Z, the article described two removable 1.5-kWh batteries and reported a 146-km range and 70-km/h maximum speed. These are figures from the 2024 report, not independent test results established here. The sources also do not establish that the different models’ ranges were measured using the same method, so they should not be treated as directly comparable real-world results.
Are Ola’s batteries swappable now?
Ola’s current FAQ answers its own question, “Are the batteries of the Ola Scooter fixed or removable?” by saying its vehicles have fixed batteries and do not use swappable batteries. That current statement does not erase what New Atlas reported about the separate 2024 announcement; it does mean the old removable-battery description should not be generalized to Ola scooters today. Neither source establishes a shared battery-swapping network. Removable batteries described for an announced vehicle are not, by themselves, evidence of public swap stations, a standard shared across brands, or a functioning network. The reviewed sources also do not confirm whether the 2024 Gig and Gig+ entered production or reached customers.

Ola’s current India-market product page lists a later S1Z family with LFP batteries. The product name resembles the 2024 S1 Z, but the reviewed sources do not establish that the later vehicles are simply revisions of the earlier announcement. Treat them as distinct dated listings rather than assuming the specifications or battery design carried over.

The later S1Z specifications, prices and delivery months come from Ola’s current S1Z product page, checked October 8, 2026. Its 179-km and 301-km ranges are manufacturer-stated IDC figures, not independently measured real-world ranges. The listed delivery months are future-facing plans, not confirmation that customer deliveries have begun. What buyers should take from the headline
- Price: The roughly $500 figure is a dated conversion of the 2024 Gig’s Indian starting price, not a current US price.
- Use: The Gig and Gig+ were presented for commercial work; the S1 Z family was presented for passenger use.
- Battery: Removable batteries were described for the 2024 announcement. Ola’s current FAQ says its vehicles have fixed batteries.
- Availability: An announced price or planned delivery month does not prove a vehicle was delivered. The reviewed sources do not confirm deliveries of the 2024 Gig models or the later S1Z variants.
