Qué significa OBD y qué supervisa

Cuando una condición detectada cumple los criterios del vehículo, el sistema puede guardar un código de diagnóstico —DTC, por sus siglas en inglés— y activar la luz de avería del motor, conocida como Check Engine o MIL. El sistema no vigila necesariamente todos los componentes del coche ni detecta cualquier clase de avería.

- Supervisión: el coche comprueba señales y condiciones de los sistemas cubiertos por su OBD.
- Detección y aviso: si encuentra una condición que satisface sus criterios, puede registrar un DTC y encender la MIL.
- Consulta: un escáner conectado al vehículo solicita los códigos y otros datos que el coche y la herramienta admiten.
- Diagnosis: el técnico interpreta la información y realiza las comprobaciones necesarias para determinar la causa y la reparación.
Por eso, el OBD sirve como alerta y punto de partida para investigar. El código relaciona la detección con un componente o sistema, pero no demuestra automáticamente que ese componente sea la causa ni que deba sustituirse. Qué puede consultar un lector OBD-II
El lector se conecta al conector de diagnóstico del coche y pide la información disponible. Según la EPA, una comprobación OBD puede incluir los DTC almacenados, el estado de la MIL y el estado de preparación de los monitores. Las funciones concretas dependen tanto de la herramienta como del vehículo: no debe suponerse que un lector universal accede a todos los módulos, sistemas o datos. Leer un código no equivale a reparar el coche. La utilidad del lector es ayudar a conocer qué ha comunicado el sistema y aportar información para la diagnosis; la causa puede requerir pruebas adicionales o equipo y procedimientos específicos del fabricante.

Qué hacer si se enciende la luz Check Engine
Si la luz queda encendida
La luz indica que el sistema ha comunicado una condición que conviene investigar. Anota o guarda los códigos antes de tomar medidas, y consulta el manual del vehículo o a un profesional para decidir qué comprobaciones corresponden. La luz por sí sola no identifica una reparación concreta.
Si la luz parpadea
La EPA advierte que una MIL parpadeante puede acompañar un problema grave, como un fallo de encendido capaz de dañar el catalizador. Recomienda limitar el uso del vehículo y buscar atención cuanto antes; también aconseja evitar la alta velocidad y las cargas excesivas mientras se resuelve el problema. Antes de borrar códigos
No borres los códigos solo para apagar la luz sin averiguar primero qué la activó. La EPA indica que durante una inspección OBD no se deben borrar códigos ni el estado de preparación; el borrado, si procede, corresponde a la etapa de reparación. Guardar la información también permite que quien diagnostique el coche la tenga disponible.

La EPA sitúa la implantación completa de OBD en los coches y camiones ligeros cubiertos de Estados Unidos a partir del año modelo 1996. También señala excepciones y exenciones para algunos vehículos de los años modelo 1994 y 1995.
