Think of Route 89 as a flexible scenic addition near Ithaca, not a prescribed route from NYC. A lake loop gives you more time by the water; stopping at a park or tasting room makes for a more focused outing. Check business hours and tasting availability directly before planning a stop.
Choose an outdoor stop
Taughannock Falls State Park
Visit Ithaca describes Taughannock Falls as 215 feet high. The park is a natural match for the Route 89 drive, but the experience depends on current access and conditions. New York State Parks lists the park as open year-round from dawn to dusk and asks visitors to call to confirm trail conditions and status (Taughannock Falls State Park).

Visit Ithaca also recommends hiking at Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman state parks. Swap a hike for campus, gardens, or downtown
Cornell University and the Botanic Gardens
For a non-hiking stop, Visit Ithaca recommends Cornell University and Cornell Botanic Gardens; its experience guide also lists the Johnson Museum of Art. Ithaca Commons and the Farmers Market
Downtown Ithaca Commons is a four-block pedestrian shopping area with more than 100 shops, restaurants, vendors, and street entertainers, according to the destination bureau. Local restaurants, farmers markets, breweries, cideries, and Cayuga Lake wine experiences can add a food-focused stop to the drive. Visit Ithaca’s attractions guide also lists options such as sommelier-guided wine experiences, woodland foraging hikes, and guided walks through Cornell Botanic Gardens (Attractions in Ithaca). These are optional extensions rather than guaranteed walk-in activities: check reservations, schedules, and opening hours with the provider.
