NXP Unveils What It Calls the Industry’s First UWB Wireless Battery Management System

NXP’s BMA606X uses UWB for communication between EV battery-management units and cell-management units. Here is what it replaces, what it does not, and what engineers should verify.

NXP’s BMA606X is a preproduction wireless communications chipset for EV battery packs, not a complete battery-management system. It replaces a communication link between cell-management units and the battery-management unit with an ultra-wideband (UWB) radio link. NXP says the approach can reduce pack wiring while coping with the reflective interior of a battery enclosure; whether it offers an advantage in a particular vehicle depends on pack-level validation.

What NXP announced

On November 12, 2024, at Electronica in Munich, NXP announced what it described as the industry’s first wireless battery-management-system solution using UWB. The company said original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) could begin evaluation and development in Q2 2025. That was an evaluation milestone, not a commitment to volume production or a vehicle launch. NXP’s announcement

The product family is BMA606X. Its purpose is narrower than the broad phrase “wireless BMS” can suggest: it provides a communication link within the battery-pack monitoring architecture. The pack still needs the electronics and systems that measure and manage the cells, protect the battery, and connect it to the vehicle.

How the BMA606X link fits in a battery pack

A battery-management unit (BMU) coordinates pack-level battery management, while cell-management units (CMUs) gather information from cells or groups of cells. In a typical BMA606X arrangement, one BMA6061 acts as the wireless network controller on the BMU side, and multiple BMA6060 devices act as wireless responders on the CMU side. NXP describes the link as a transparent wireless alternative to its typical isolated daisy-chain communication between CMUs. BMA606X product information

  • BMA6061: wireless network controller in the BMU.
  • BMA6060: wireless network responder in each relevant CMU.

That arrangement replaces a communication path, not every electrical connection in a battery pack. Cell sensing and balancing, power delivery, grounding or isolation structures, safety disconnects, and other pack functions remain part of the design. The wireless chipset also does not, by itself, constitute the software, safety mechanisms, antennas, or complete BMS architecture.

Why replace a wired communication link?

Wired BMS architectures use harnesses and connectors to connect battery modules. Removing or reducing those communication connections could simplify routing and assembly, reduce connector and wiring complexity, and give pack designers more freedom in module placement. It may also make it easier to reuse pack designs across vehicle platforms or separate mechanical development from electrical development. NXP presents these as potential system-level benefits; actual effects depend on the pack, manufacturing process, and validation requirements. NXP’s announcement

Less harnessing can also free some volume or mass for other uses, potentially allowing a different cell layout or more usable space. That does not change the cells’ electrochemical energy density, and it does not guarantee that a wireless pack will be lighter, cheaper, or hold more energy. Antennas, RF layout, qualification, redundancy, and service procedures also have costs and packaging implications.

Why NXP chose UWB

An EV battery enclosure is a difficult radio environment. Metal walls, cell cans, busbars, partitions, and shielding can reflect or attenuate radio signals. NXP’s argument is that UWB’s high-bandwidth, pulse-based transmission can be more resistant to reflections and frequency-selective fading in this environment than narrow-band approaches such as 2.4 GHz Bluetooth Low Energy links. This is NXP’s comparative claim, not evidence that UWB will outperform every wireless system in every pack. NXP’s explanation of the approach

“UWB” here refers to the communication method used for battery-pack monitoring; it should not be mistaken for a general consumer UWB radio intended for functions such as digital keys, ranging, or asset tracking. Even with UWB, antenna placement and pack geometry matter. A design still needs to account for shielding, interference, thermal conditions, coexistence with other vehicle electronics, and applicable radio regulations.

Where it sits in NXP’s wider BMS offering

NXP presents BMA606X as part of its FlexCom chipset approach, which supports wired and wireless BMS configurations with a common software architecture and safety libraries. That could help an OEM reuse some software or safety infrastructure between architectures, but the amount of reuse depends on the final hardware, software, safety case, and vehicle program. It is not a guarantee that a wired design can be switched to wireless without further integration and qualification.

The broader architecture can include cell controllers, a battery-management controller, power supplies, safety systems, and pack-level software. NXP also identifies its MC33777 battery-junction-box IC as a complementary component for functions including voltage, current, and chassis-isolation monitoring. These products serve different roles from the BMA606X communication link; compatibility and suitability for a particular design need to be checked against current product documentation. How to read the “industry’s first” claim

The careful wording is that NXP says BMA606X is the industry’s first wireless BMS solution with UWB capabilities. The available announcement establishes NXP’s claim, but not a comprehensive audit proving that no earlier UWB prototype, research system, or undisclosed supplier existed. Nor should it be expanded into a claim that NXP launched the first wireless BMS of any kind.

Other companies have wireless-BMS material, but the cited offerings are not established as equivalents to NXP’s UWB link:

  • Texas Instruments: its TIDA-020076 reference design supports wired and wireless BMS interfaces and identifies the automotive-qualified CC2662R-Q1 wireless MCU in the wireless option. The cited material does not establish that it uses NXP’s 7.5/8 GHz UWB approach. A reference design is also not, by itself, a drop-in production system. TI’s wireless BMS overview
  • Analog Devices: ADI describes a wireless BMS for communication between cell-monitoring ICs and the BMS controller, emphasizing reliability and low latency. The cited source does not identify it as a UWB implementation. ADI wireless BMS overview

These examples show why the comparison is better framed as a choice of battery-pack communication architecture—and, within wireless designs, a comparison of specific radio implementations—rather than as a simple contest over which supplier has wireless BMS.

What engineers need to validate

The relevant engineering decision is whether a wireless link fits the pack and vehicle program better than a wired architecture. A radio specification alone cannot answer that. A design review should address:

NXP discusses ASIL support across its broader BMS portfolio, but that portfolio-level language should not be taken as proof that every BMA606X function has a particular safety rating. Product- and function-specific safety documentation is needed for that conclusion. NXP BMS portfolio information

Availability and how to pursue evaluation

NXP’s product listing labels BMA606X Preproduction, rather than presenting it as a generally available, mass-market production component. The product documentation warns that information may change. The Q2 2025 evaluation timing announced in 2024 should therefore not be read as confirmation of volume availability or qualification for a particular vehicle program. Current BMA606X listing

For a professional evaluation, prospective buyers can use NXP’s sample and sales channels to ask about access, quantities, package variants, regional availability, documentation, and lifecycle expectations.
