What BMW engine had three turbochargers?
It was BMW’s N57S 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel, marketed under the M Performance TwinPower Turbo name. “TwinPower Turbo” was BMW’s technology branding; it did not mean this particular engine had only two turbochargers. BMW’s 22 March 2012 announcement identified the N57S, and the company’s later regional information explicitly described three turbochargers.
This was an M Performance powertrain, not a gasoline engine or the conventional M5 engine. BMW Group Asia’s 1 November 2012 announcement named the X5 M50d and X6 M50d as models due in Singapore later that month. BorgWarner’s 8 November 2012 release also listed the M550d xDrive Sedan and Touring, alongside the X5 M50d and X6 M50d. How did the three-turbo system work?
The N57S used a staged arrangement, not three identical turbochargers all doing the same job from idle. BMW described two comparatively small high-pressure turbochargers and one larger low-pressure turbocharger. The sequence brought different units into operation as engine speed and demand rose:

- Just above idle: one small high-pressure turbocharger became active, helping the engine respond at low engine speed.
- As revs rose: increasing exhaust flow engaged the larger low-pressure turbocharger.
- Under greater demand: a bypass route brought the second small high-pressure turbocharger into operation.
BMW also described variable turbine geometry on the two high-pressure units, coordinated exhaust-gas and fresh-air paths, and indirect charge-air cooling. BorgWarner, the system supplier, identified the high-pressure units as two BV45 variable-turbine-geometry turbochargers and the low-pressure unit as a water-cooled B2 turbocharger. The point of the stages was to use different-sized units across the engine’s operating range, rather than rely on one large turbocharger alone. How much power did the triple-turbo N57S make?
BMW Group Asia’s 1 November 2012 media information quoted 381 hp and 740 Nm of torque, with peak torque available from 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. BorgWarner’s 8 November 2012 release gave the output as 280 kW (381 hp) and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft). These are period manufacturer and supplier specifications, not independent instrumented test results.

BMW Group Asia also quoted 0–100 km/h times of 5.4 seconds for the X5 M50d and 5.3 seconds for the X6 M50d. Those acceleration figures apply to the named vehicles in that release, not to every N57S installation. BMW Group Asia, 1 November 2012; BorgWarner, 8 November 2012.
Was the 2016 BMW 750d engine also triple-turbocharged?
No. BMW announced a four-turbo version of its 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel for the 750d xDrive and 750Ld xDrive in May 2016, describing it as a successor that replaced the previous three-turbo arrangement. BMW quoted 400 hp and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) for that engine and said availability would begin in July 2016.

The figures are from announcements made in different years and for different vehicle contexts; the table is not a controlled comparison or a claim about independently measured performance. BMW’s 2016 release also cited a maximum common-rail injection pressure above 2,500 bar for the four-turbo successor. That specification belongs to the later engine, not the N57S. BMW Group’s 2016 four-turbo announcement.

The N57S’s turbo count, staging and quoted output are established by BMW and BorgWarner’s historical announcements. Those specifications alone do not establish real-world reliability, repair costs, current parts availability or whether a used example is a sound purchase. They also should not be treated as a current buying recommendation: the sources cited here describe period engineering and vehicle announcements, not present-day ownership conditions.
