What the court heard about the driving

The details of the journey come from news accounts of court proceedings, rather than a judgment or transcript. At the April 2025 hearing, ABC reported prosecutor James Nicholls’ account that the group was travelling to Daisy’s nightclub in Leederville and that the driver was trying to arrive before a lockout.

The prosecutor alleged the Hilux reached 128 km/h on Phoenix Road and 133 km/h on North Lake Road, and was travelling at least 100 km/h at the time of the crash. He also alleged the driver ran a red light. The defence disputed some of the speed estimates and the number of red lights, and contested whether a rear seatbelt was inaccessible. These particulars should therefore be understood as reported hearing evidence, including the recorded disputes, not as uncontested findings. ABC’s April 7 court report describes the competing accounts.

In its June sentencing report, ABC said the court heard that cocaine had been consumed by the driver and some passengers; the vehicle had travelled at more than 130 km/h in a 70 km/h zone; the front passenger seat had been removed and replaced facing backwards; and the vehicle lacked a stabiliser bar. Judge Hylton Quail said the driver had driven well above speed limits, run a red light and exposed passengers and other road users to risk. The report quoted the judge saying, “What followed was all but inevitable,” and telling the driver, “Your remorse is genuine.”

The case in Western Australia’s road-safety context

ABC reported that 188 people were killed on Western Australian roads in 2024, the highest annual toll since 2016, when 195 people died. Those statewide figures provide context, not an explanation of what caused the Campo crash. They do not establish a connection between this individual case and the annual road toll.
